Principal’s ReportDamian HigginsAt a recent whole school assembly, I talked about the fact that we have several new students joining the College and how important it is to welcome them into our community. It has been great to hear from the parents of these new students about how happy their children are in their new school and that they have settled in and made friends quickly. It’s always easy to ‘talk the talk’ without ‘walking the walk’. Living out our faith in practical ways is something the Bible says a lot about. A passage that I am often challenged by is 1 Corinthians 13:1. In this letter, Paul says, ‘If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.’ As I am sure you are aware, a clanging cymbal is an oppressive sound that can cause all kinds of unpleasant effects unless, of course, it is played properly in the context of a piece of music. I am pretty sure Paul was referring to the former rather than the latter. So, to not actively show love to others is considered to be more than just a lack of action, it is put across to us by Paul as being a destructive kind of behaviour that can cause distress. This is where loving communities like Northside have the opportunity to come into their own. Having spent the first half of the year getting to know our community members, it has been wonderful to see so many examples God’s love on display. There are very few places that I know of where we have daily opportunities to love others so practically. As staff, students and parents, we spend so much time together here at the College. Some parents will spend as many as 20 years or more of their lives involved and connected here at NCC. This is significant and it presents to us not only opportunities to reach out and love others, but also to be challenged in our efforts to walk the walk together in Christ.Grace & Peace

WelfareFiona DumitracheParental involvement in children’s livesThere is a high correlation between life satisfaction for both child and adult when parents are involved in their child’s life. Just by having daily or near daily conversations with your child about their day can make a difference of up to 40% higher levels of life satisfaction.Young people are intuitive in perceiving how interested their parents are in them. Specific to school, poorer relationships or connections with parents correlate to poorer attitudes towards education and lower-performing students. On the opposite side, students can have higher performance rating when parents show genuine interest and spend quality time with their child. Greater motivation spurs on greater engagement with their work.Additionally, many studies have shown that a young person’s resilience is greatly improved as motivation and life satisfaction reinforces capacity in the mind of that young person.
So what can you do to improve connection and interest in your child’s life?
~ Eat dinner around the table and talk about daily events and feelings.
~ Put technology away and have uninterrupted family time.
~ Pull out a card or board game. ~ Make something together. ~ Make a “date” with them. ~ Have a special themed dinner
once a month, get dressed up if you like!
~ Don’t forget physical contact. This changes as your children gets older but there are many ways to “hug” them.
~ LAUGH and PRAY together. ~ Regulate your own emotions so
that you create a safe place for your children to communicate theirs.
~ LISTEN ~ BE THERE! Don’t under-rate the
value of your presence.
2017Amazing Father’s Day Race

Amy HornemanAcademy Conferences: Philosophy with Julie ArlissThis year we again had the privilege of attending Julie Arliss’ philosophy conferences. The Senior conference was held at Camberwell Grammar School in May, and the Junior conference was held at Siena College, Camberwell, in July. Students were treated to scintillating and eye-opening talks at this year’s conferences on such topics as: Justice, Truth, Beauty & Mathematics; Do Animals Feel Pain and Have a Right Not to Be Eaten?; Science: What Comes First, Observation or Inspiration?; Debate: This House Believes That It Is Never Right to Kill a Person; Rock in 11 Dimensions: Where Physics and Guitars Collide; Square box, round pizza, triangle slices. Logic: A philosophical investigation; What Dreams May Come? Examining claims about the afterlife; A Gold Medal Mindset and the The BIG Debate: This house believes that everyone should tell the truth all the time.
Our students have the opportunity at each of these conference days to listen to and to participate in sessions presenting big ideas that challenge our thinking about life,
reality and why we are here. It is fantastic to see the interest that is growing for such intellectual exploration at Northside Christian College, and we need to acknowledge the impact of the work Ms Olesya Eichwald does with Philosophy Corner, a weekly discussion group on a Friday lunch time, which gives our students a forum for learning, discussion and exploration of powerful philosophical ideas.

Years 4 & 5On Thursday 26th July, the Year 4/5 and Year 5 classes participated in two information sessions about social justice as part of our Mappen studies. Colleen, from the organisation ‘Care4Kids’, came and explained to us some of the horrible conditions in which children in Uganda live.Care4Kids are a not-for-profit organisation that are raising money for the villages of Uganda. Colleen explained how poor families in Uganda are and told us that many children have little or no access to education, healthcare, hygiene and shelter. Care and help from Care4Kids has seen villages slowly recover from extreme poverty. Colleen explained that they do their best to help a few but, unfortunately, the organisation cannot help everyone. For example, by building a local school for children to attend, some children now have access to an education, but many of the kids that Care4Kids cannot help sit outside the windows of the school, trying to catch a glimpse of some teaching. It was an excellent experience for the Year 4/5 and Year 5 classes because we learned about the struggles of kids in Uganda. I felt horrible to hear how the Ugandan people lived but, with the help of organisations like Care4Kids, things are changing. Care4Kids believes they can be the hands and feet of God to the people they help. I hope we can all be like that and help the people around us. (Agam Year 4/5)
We are privileged to be able to go to school. (Belinda Year 5)In my opinion, I think it is a great idea to help the people in other countries who are struggling. (Tayla Year 5)It is amazing to see the things that various organisations have done and how much they have helped others, like how God wants us to do. (Lily Year 5)I like the idea of helping others in severe poverty, so that is why I admire the works of these organisations. (Jacob Year 5)Many children in poor countries have no other choices but to bathe, wash their hands, drink and wash their clothes in dirty water. We are so blessed. (Jazlene Year 5)I’m glad to have food, a clean bed and bedsheets, water, electricity, warm showers and, most importantly, education. (Sawat Year 5)I am so touched that children in poor countries do not have the opportunity to attend school and, if they have, they are so excited about learning new things. (Sharun Year 5)
