Ashigs

The art of the ashigs is an ancient bardic traditionthat belongs mostly to the old Turkic World(Central Asia, Iran, Turkey, Caucasus and NorthWest-China). An ashig is a poet, composer, singer,musical performer and occasionally a dancer whobeats on the strings of the saz and improvisesserenades and ballads. The musical and poeticheritage of Azerbaijani ashigs dates back to the14th-century and was created, preserved and isstill passed on in oral form which demandsexceptional musical memory and ear. VocalistGochaq Askarov performs with Aliagha Sadiyevtarand Elshan Mansurov kamancha.

Begum ParveenSultanaThe NCEM is delighted to welcome back theundisputed Queen of Hindustani Music, BegumParveen Sultana, also dubbed the ‘Poetess ofMusic’ and ‘the Ultimate Soprano’ by theinternational press.

The young Parveen was influenced by her father,Ikramul Majid and then trained by AcharyaChinmoy Lahiri in Calcutta. At 12, she was theyoungest artist to receive the Padmashri’, thecoveted award from the Government of India. InBombay, her Guru and mentor was UstadMohammed Dilshad Khan with whom sheacquired a new dimension to her singing, givingit the required mastery of ragas and a voiceculture combined with uplifting spirituality.Parveenji will be accompanied by tabla maestroPartha Sarathi Mukerjee, Chiranjib Chakrabortyharmonium and Nina Virdee tanpura.

A new musical work by UK digital composerAmbrose Field. The piece is a setting of vocalfragments by Flemish master Guillaume Dufay(1400-1474), sung by tenor John Potter, formerlyof the Hilliard Ensemble. Ambrose digitallymultiplies and modifies the newly composedmaterial from more than 100 original tracks. Theresult is a rich, contemporary sound world whichretains the essence of 15th-century Franco-Flemishpolyphony. There will be PA and a projection screenfor the background video specially commissionedfromMick Lynch. ‘Being Dufay’ was recentlyreleased as a CD by ECM Records.

NCEM Composers Award 2010In 2009, the NCEM worked in partnership with BBC Radio 3 and The Tallis Scholars to presentthese prestigious awards to 16 year-old Elizabeth Edwards and 21 year-old Michael Perrett(pictured). Their compositions were premiered by The Tallis Scholars in York Minster as part ofthe York Early Music Festival, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Early Music Show’. Informationabout the 2010 Composers Award will be available on the NCEM website from October.
