We invite you to join us in our continued endeavors to preserve the History and Heritage of Newnan & Coweta County, Georgia. Victory At All Costs! On Saturday, August 17, the McRitchie-Hollis Museum was transported back to 1941 as service men and women lingered about and enjoyed the croonings of “Bombshells United.” Guests were greeted in the foyer by the Commemorative Air Force, The Dixie Wing, a WWII aircraft restoring society. In the breakfast room, the role of African-Americans in the war was discussed and had an interesting display. The library had a weapons display and in the Sunroom, the Margol twins kept guests entertained with lighthearted WWII stories. Melissa Dickson, a poet and mother of four who resides in Newnan, will read selections from her new collection, "Sweet Aegis." Her work has appeared in North American Review, Southern Humanities Review, Southern Women’s Review (Issues One and Two), Birmingham Arts Journal, Sense Magazine, and other print and online publications. Her collection, "Cameo" was released in 2011 by New Plains Press. Her newest collection revisits and revises the life and death of the mythical mother of two, Medusa. Dickson holds an MFA in studio arts from The School of Visual Arts and an MFA in Creative Writing from Converse College. Poet Peter Campion describes her poetry as “remarkable for the range of experience they po r t r ay…Dickson shows how we a r e simultaneously haunted and enriched by our histories. She brings alive her vision through mastery of poetic technique, through sentences and lines that feel both sublime and down to earth..”

Director, Joanna Arrieta, explores the life and legacy of Margaret

Mitchell Marsh in this 45-minute interactive presentation on Thursday, September 5th at the Historic Train Depot. Mitchell's novel "Gone With the Wind" has captured the attention of audiences all around the globe for the past 77 years and the famous love story has been translated in over 40 different languages since then - but not much is well-known about the life of the famous author. Arrieta served as the expert on Margaret Mitchell's life for the Atlanta History Center during her tenure as the Director of Interpretation. She was responsible for the interpretation and training of tours and docents at the Margaret Mitchell House and appeared in multiple documentaries, interviews and assisted in the curating of an exhibition on her life. During the presentation, Arrieta will explore the tragedies, triumphs, and life experiences of Margaret Mitchell and how it played a part in the writing of her only novel.

Local author W. Jeff Bishop will discuss his novel, "A Cold Coming," which he describes as "a true story of madness, moonshine and murder in rural Georgia during the Great Depression." The novel is based on the true story of his great-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Latham, a rural school teacher who murdered most of his family in March, 1931. Bishop is a graduate student in public history at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. He also works part-time for the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, is developing a play based on the John Wallace trial for the Newnan Theatre Company, and has written (off & on) for the Times-Herald newspaper and Newnan-Coweta Magazine for many years. Jeff lives in Newnan with his wife, Barbara, and five children

2012 was the inaugural year of the Palmette Ball. A black and white themed, formal function, the Palmette Ball derives its name from a carved motif found throughout the McRitchie-Hollis Museum. In 2012, over 100 guests dined on sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, champagne and a full bar. And a tuxedo clad music combo entertained the dancing and festive guests. The 2012 Palmette Ball was by far the best New Year’s Eve fundraising party in all of Coweta County. The Board purposefully kept the ticket price to a minimum and we have the same intentions for 2013 so that we may introduce our elegant affair to Coweta newcomers and young couples. Pricing will stay at $65 for members and $75 for non members.

As we strive to expand and bring more people into our organization, we would like to double the size of this event! Yes, we are in a Gatsby mood! How many formal events are there in Coweta? (not many.) If we do reach our goal of greatly expanding the event, we will tent the party on the pavers to the side of the house. Major marketing is planned to increase participation. Ladies, start preparing your husbands. No “low-key-stay-at-home-New-Year’s” for this year! As a matter of fact, it’s really our patriotic duty to party on New Year’s as we will be helping the economy, supporting historic preservation and lifting our spirits as we welcome the New Year together. As the rest of the country seems to be in a funk, we can rejoice that in Coweta County, things just keep getting better and better! Truly, we are blessed to live here!

We are seeking $10,000 in underwriting to expand our annual event. Underwriting helps to offset the costs of producing the event, plus contributes to the Children’s Museum fund and Education fund. We are fortunate that our city elders view historic preservation as an economic stimulus. It’s very important to our county and sets the tone for further expansion. Sponsors of the Palmette Ball will be listed on the invitation, and in all public relations, advertising and signage. For online media, links to sponsor websites will also be provided.

Levels of Sponsorship and little fun stuff:RollsRoyce ! $2500 -Includes 6 tkts, -A specialty drink served in their honor. -Special bar signage. Specialty napkins.-All party hats emblazoned with logo.

Bentley ! $1000-Includes 4 tickets; -Mini dessert buffet with logos on desserts! (yes, it’s possible, safe and delicious.)

Packard ! $500- Includes 2 tickets, -New Year’s poppers imprinted with logo
