I have known Ms Dietrichson since January 2013, as a student at the Final Course in Development Studies (UTV3091 Avslutningsemne i utviklingsstudier). The last semester of our study program includes lectures and seminars on thematic and methodological issues, and the writing of a bachelor thesis. Our students have the option to carry out fieldwork in a country of the South, and to write their theses based on fieldwork research. Students choose the country and topic on their own, and develop a proposal to be reviewed and approved by the Program. Upon their return, they have to deliver a fieldwork report. Ms Dietrichson wrote her bachelor thesis on the role of NGOs in processes of participation and exclusion of the poor in India. She addressed this issue from the perspective of deepening democracy, focusing on practices within specific citizenship and urban governance programs. Her thesis is based on fieldwork carried out in March-April last year in Bangalore, where she collected primary and secondary data. She conducted in-depth interviews with representatives, employees and field workers of major NGOs actively involved in the programs. Ms Dietrichson has successfully demonstrated the ability to pursue her own initiatives, and to apply her academic knowledge to the design and development of a specific research project. Gjennom!mitt!praktikantopphold!engasjement!i!Norges!Fredsråd!fikk!jeg!mulighet!til!å!engasjere!sivilt!samfunn!i!spørsmål!rundt!norsk!utenriksR!og!sikkerhetspolitikk.!Denne!erfaringen!kvalifiserte!meg!for!et!praktikantopphold!ved!den!norske!ambassaden!i!Riga,!der!jeg!fikk!videre!erfaring!med!norsk!diplomatisk!praksis.!Jeg!hadde!også!ansvar!for!å!rapportere!og!skrive!analyser!om!økonomiske!og!sosiale!forhold!i!Latvia.!!

Studier!i!England!er!kostbare,!SOAS!er!en!av!de!dyrere!universitetene!ettersom!den!er!så!anerkjent.!Å!bo!og!leve!i!London!er!også!svært!dyrt,!spesielt!i!konteksten!av!en!svak!norsk!krone!og!sterk!engelsk!pund.!Selv!om!lånekassen!støtter!studier!i!utlandet,!vil!denne!ikke!være!tilstrekkelig!for!å!dekke!leieprisene!i!London.!!

NEINORDIC CENTRE IN INDIA

COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

This is to cerrift that Ms. Elise Luhr Dietdchson has obtained ECTS gtade A in the course,Demography, Gender and Reproductive Health: An Inttoduction to Population Studies in India' (10

ECTS) which has been organized by the Nordic Centte in India Q{CD - coopetation with the International

Institute fot Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, ftom 8th July to 4'h August,2012.

The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the study of demogtaphy in the Indian context byhghlight-g contemporary trends in population growth and distribution, fertility, mortality, ubanization and

-tg.å"". Within tle theme of gender and reptoductive health, the coutse addtesses topics such as thecoicept of gender in the Indian miJieu, gender inequality, rlr.atritage and dowry, domestic violence,r.proå.r.tir.. health status in India, familyplanning and abortion, gender concerns in health c re,a genderedloåk "t HIV/AIDS, prostitution and health, and ethical issues involved in public policy in these

aforementioned ateas. The course requires that the student actively participates in lectutes, discussions,

assignments and field visits.

The required assignments are as follows:

(1) Term Paper and Presentation: Students ate required to submit a written paper of 3000 to 4000words on a

r.i.r'u.t topic based on themes such as the basics of Indian demography, reproductive morbidity and health,gender inequality in India. The paper has to be submitted and presented in the fourth week.(Z; fi.ta visit Report I: Students are required to submit a group repott of 1500 to 2000 words and make apresentation based on a field visit assigned to them.

i:; nl.ta visit repott II: Students are required to submit and present field reports of 2000-2500 words each

based on their practical expetiences in the visits to the various rural health intewention sites they witnessed at

Institute of Health Management (IHMP), Pachod, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra.

Field visits were arranged to Centre for the Study of Social Change (CSSC) that under the Project WIN(Women India Netwot$ Mumbai implement interventions in a modular fotmat for integrated humanå..,.Iop-..t of Bandra's slum dwellers using Health as an entry point; to Family Planning Association offndia (FPAI) that is recognized as India's leading and largest reproductive and sexual health otgznizaion; toInstitute of Health Managem"nt (IHMP), Pachod, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra that works with healthand education interventions in the rural area; and to the slums in Dhatavi and Mankhurd in Mumbai.Sightseeing included places of interest in Mumbai and Aurangabad.

The course is designed with the Nordic university curriculum in mind and it is open for graduate studentsftom the Nordic Centre in India member universities.

The coutse contains 109 contact houts and 140 hours of independent work.
