Lindsay M. Hayes continues to run the “Suicide Prevention in Custody” program within NCIA’s Criminal Justice Services division. In 2013, Lindsay was appointed as the suicide prevention expert to the Special Master of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California in a long-running class action lawsuit regarding the provision of adequate mental health treatment and suicide prevention practices within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. During the past few years, Lindsay has spent much of his time auditing and providing assessments of suicide prevention practices in more than 23 California prisons each year. The annual reports have resulted in court-ordered reforms throughout the state. In addition, Lindsay periodically serves as a suicide prevention consultant to the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division (Special Litigation Section) and for the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in their respective investigations of conditions of confinement in both adult and juvenile correctional facilities throughout the country. Lindsay’s Training Curriculum and Program Guide on Suicide Detection and Prevention in Juvenile Detention/Correctional Facilities and Residential Programs: Instructor’s Manual and Training Curriculum and Program Guide on Suicide Detection and Prevention in Jail and Prison Facilities: Instructor’s Manual were published by NCIA in 2013 and 2016, respectively, and these training manuals are currently being utilized by practitioners throughout the country.

Baseball season is right around the corner! Arranged by Herb Hoelter, NCIA CEO, a team of NCIA Business Services employees spent a Saturday at the Baltimore Convention Center when the Baltimore Orioles hosted their 2018 FanFest. Individuals and staff got to hear speeches from players and coaches, visit different booths, and even see some of the Oriole players at the event.

CJS Hits the Road

Ally Mills is a Case Associate in the NCIA Criminal Justice Services Department. Her job is to work closely with clients to create emotional and meaningful sentencing videos and conduct in-depth interviews. These videos highlight the client’s life and role in the community, and are submitted to the court in preparation for a defendants’ sentencing. Last month Ally visited three different cities across the United States in seven days. In these cities she met with the client to learn about his charitable program participation, interview family and friends, discover how he cares for his ill wife, and to get a professional overview on the client. The trip started off in Las Vegas where Ali interviewed 5 people including the clients’ wife and two best friends. Ali then headed to St. Louis where she got a tour of the city and was able to see the childhood home of the client. Lastly, Ali landed in Orlando where she was able to wrap up her interviews. The video as a whole will give the Judge a picture of our NCIA client in a different light. This video brings to life his good works and what he has done in the community and gives the Judge a visual tool to use. It took 5 days to edit the film and when asked about the trip Ally stated, “It’s always exciting to travel. At the same time it’s difficult to arrange different videographers in different cities and then edit the video once everything is complied. My favorite part is getting to know who you are working for and developing a relationship with them and I enjoy building the video city by city.” Ally was able to create a documentary of this clients life in hope to secure an alternative sentencing plan.
