Military Affiliated Degree Programs Military and veteran students are welcome to apply for any degree program that ODU Distance Learning offers. However, the Old Dominion military programs below are specifically designed or recommended for these students, with significant credits awarded for military training and experience. In some situations, military students can take courses in these programs via Portable Media (CD-ROM or DVD).

What is the MSW@USC Program? The MSW@USC is an innovative Master of Social Work program delivered
online. The University Of Southern California School Of Social Work is the
first among elite research universities to offer a full web-based Master of
Social Work degree program. Unlike other online MSW or human services
degrees, the MSW@USC is an accredited program offered by a prestigious
research university and ranked in the top 10 by U.S. News & World Report.
Available nationally through our Virtual Academic Center, the MSW@USC
engages students in live, face-to-face classes online with hands-on,
supervised traditional field instruction in local communities where they live
and work. Lectures are not simply ported from basic presentations, but are
delivered live in an interactive classroom environment. Students have the
opportunity to see their professors and peers through webcams, take part in
online chats and even participate in break-out discussion groups.
What is the Curriculum Like? The MSW@USC program mirrors the stringent curriculum and academic
rigor of the on-campus program delivered by the same regular, full-time
faculty who teach onsite. The foundation-year curriculum provides a common
base of knowledge, skills and values by introducing theories, issues and
practice methods that deal with individuals and their environment. The
second half of the curriculum offers advanced training in a concentration
area to develop in-depth knowledge and skills in Families and Children;
Community Organization, Planning and Administration (COPA); or Mental
Health. Students can also select the optional Military Social Work and
Veteran Services sub-concentration to supplement coursework.
Is There Coursework Available to Serve the Military? Yes, MSW@USC students may choose the Military Social Work and Veteran
Services sub-concentration. Many war veterans suffer serious mental health
disorders ranging from post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression, which
can lead to substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse and suicide.
This specialized area of study prepares individuals to provide a full range of
human services to the nation‟s armed forces personnel, military veterans and
their families, helping them cope with the stresses of military life. Coursework
emphasizes the military as a workplace culture, managing trauma and post-
traumatic stress, clinical practice with military families, and preventative care
and health management in military settings. Students will complete 600 clock
hours of an internship in various types of approved settings working with
veteran populations. Practicum sites are based on the availability of the
agency to accept a student and a field instructor to provide supervision;
therefore, no guarantees are extended to students on a specific type of
agency that would be arranged. Please note that only students residing on
base are candidates for placement on base.
What Do I Need to Know About Applying? The admissions requirements for the MSW@USC are the same as those for
our onsite program. Please refer to our website atmsw.usc.edu for specific
admission criteria, application instructions, deadlines and financial aid

In the last few years, far too many veterans have learned the hard way that it takes quite a bit of work to be successful in college. This has been reflected in the national graduation rates and drop-out statistics. Veterans and service members can learn to avoid the pitfalls and college scams by doing some homework before they enroll in school.

Veterans who need refresher courses have nothing to be ashamed of. Think about it this way, how long has it been since you had to do any algebra or geometry homework? Or, write a double spaced 20 page APA styled essay? The point is that jumping into college without being academically ready is a recipe for disaster.
Veterans Upward Bound (VUB)
Like many Veterans, you have probably avoided going to college because you feel you lack the needed
academic skills. After all, it's been years since you went to school. Thanks to the Veterans Upward Bound
(VUB) Program you don't have to let your rusty academic skills keep you from getting your degree and
pursuing the career of your dreams. The VUB program services include:
Basic skills development to help veterans successfully completes a high school equivalency program and gain admission to college education programs
Short-term remedial or refresher classes for high school graduates that have put off pursuing a college education
Assistance with applications to the college or university of choice Assistance with applying for financial aid Academic advice and assistance Career Counseling Assistance in getting veterans services from other available resources
The VUB program can help you improve your skills in:
Mathematics Laboratory Science Foreign Language
Reading Literature Composition Computer Basics
Any other subjects you may need for success in education beyond high school
And Tutorial & Study Skills Assistance
To be eligible for VUB you must:
Be a U.S. Military veteran with 181 or more days active duty service and discharged on/after January
31, 1955, under conditions other than dishonorable; and
Meet the criteria for Low-income according to guidelines published annually by the U.S. Department of
Education, AND/OR a first-generation potential college graduate; and
Demonstrate academic need for Veterans Upward Bound according; and
Meet other local eligibility criteria as noted in the local VUB project's Approved Grant Proposal, such as
county of residence, etc.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Retraining
Assistance Program Congress passed, and the President signed into law, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Labor (DOL) are working together to roll out this new program on July 1, 2012.
ELIGIBILITY
To qualify, a Veteran must: Be at least 35 but no more than 60 years old
Be unemployed Have an other than dishonorable discharge Not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program (e.g.: the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill,
Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance) Not be in receipt of VA compensation due to unemployability
Not be enrolled in a Federal or state job training program
PARTICIPANTS LIMITS AND PAYMENTS
The program is limited to 45,000 participants from July 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012, and to 54,000 participants
from October 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014. Participants may receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the monthly full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill–Active Duty program (currently $1,473 per month). DOL will provide employment assistance to every Veteran
who participates upon completion of the program. VA will begin accepting application online here by May 15, 2012.
ELIGIBLE PROGRAMS
Participants must be enrolled in a program of education approved for VA benefits that is offered by a community college or technical school. The program must lead to an Associate Degree, Non-College Degree, or a Certificate, and train the Veteran for a high demand occupation. Search for an approved program here.

MILITARY EDUCATION APPRECIATION DAY
JEBLCFS Navy College office will host a Military Education Appreciation Day on Friday, 13
July 2012 at the Navy College Office, 1481 D. Street, Bldg. 3016. The event is sponsored by Saint Leo University, American Military University, ECPI University Empire State College,
Coastline Community College, Troy University, Old Dominion University, University of
Maryland, University College, Vincennes University, and Thomas Edison State College. There
will be free food, fun, and giveaways. This event is open to anyone who has base access. For

GI Bill Update
Submitting a Transfer Request 1. Use your Common Access Card (CAC), DoD Self-Service Logon (DS Logon), or DFAS Account (myPay) to sign in to the milConnect portal application: http://milconnect.dmdc.mil
When the milConnect Home page displays, select Education → Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) from the menu bar
2. To transfer benefit months to a family member, do the following:
• Locate the name of the appropriate family member in the table.
• From the Months drop-down list, select the number of months (0 to 36) to transfer.
• Optionally, enter an End Date in YYYY-MM-DD format.
Repeat this process for each family member.
3. Once transfer Months have been assigned to your family members, you must submit your transfer request for approval by doing the following:
• Select the “Post-9/11 GI Bill Chapter 33” radio button in the Select the educational program from which to transfer benefits section.
• Select all the boxes in the Transferability of Education Benefits Acknowledgements section to indicate that you have read and understand each statement.
• Click the Submit Request button. If the submission is successful, a Confirmation message displays. After you have submitted your transfer request, the Sponsor information section at the top of
the TEB page updates to show that the Status is now „Submitted’. The Status Date is blank and will remain blank until a Service Representative approves, rejects, or sets your request to a pending status.
4. Once your transfer request is approved, your request data is sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Each family member must first apply for a certificate of eligibility from the DVA before they can use their transferred benefits. Once the DVA receives the request data and VA Form 22-1990E, they will be able to process your family members‟ requests to use their benefits. The application for the certificate of eligibility (VA Form 22-1990E) can be found through the Department of Veterans Affairs‟ VONAPP Web Site (http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp). Or you can call the DVA for Education Benefits information at 1-888-GIBILL1
5. After receiving their certificates of eligibility from the DVA, your family members must provide the certificates to the school.
6. If your family members do not receive their certificates of eligibility from the DVA before they
enroll in school, they should ask the veterans‟ certifying official at the school to submit to the DVA an enrollment certification for the academic term. Tuition funds will be sent direct from the DVA to the school. Children using months of transferred
benefit will receive the monthly living stipend and the books and supplies stipend. A spouse using a transferred benefit will only receive the monthly living stipend. A spouse may also be eligible for the books and supplies stipend if he/she uses the benefit after you separate from active duty. Note: Spouses can use their benefit for 15 years after the member separates/retires; children can use their benefits until their 26th birthdays.
College Level Examinations Program (CLEP), DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), and Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) are offered every Wednesday morning at 0900 and 1100 at JEBLCFS, Bldg. 3016, Room 227 and at NAS Oceana every Tuesday morning at 0900 and 1100 and every Wednesday evening at 1600-1900, Bldg. 531, Room 104.Your scores are available immediately! Exams are free for active duty service members. Other eligible examinees must pay a fee. To pre-register, or for more information call (757)464-6449 (JEBLCFS) or (757)428-8395 (NAS Oceana).

To use your GI Bill, you must first apply using either of the following:
(1) Access GI Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov. Once on the site, click on “Apply for Benefits”; then, click on “Apply online (VONAPP-Veteran’s Online Application). This will take you to the application. Proceed as directed.
OR (2) A paper application called a Form 22-1990 maybe requested at the GI Bill website. You may mail the form to the regional office associated with your home address, or if you know what school you want to attend, you may mail the form to the VA Regional Processing Office for the region of the school‟s physical address.
Before applying, please read all the information available on the GI Bill Website about each program that you may be qualified to apply.
