Cardinal Newman for Today presents John Henry Newman’s life as a tree. It is rooted in his encounter with the wisdom of antiquity, the discovery of divine revelation and the encounter with the Fathers of the Church. It produced shoots in the living tradition of the church, the faith-life of believers and the reality of doctrine. Its fruits, finally, are visible in the gospel of joy lived out in obedience to God and conscience.

As spiritual guide and director, Teresa of Avila placed prayer at the center of the relationship between the human person and God. She is best known for her mysticism, but this volume presents the many other kinds of prayer that sustain us over the course of our lives. She places steadfast trust in God as the cornerstone of a holy life, but insists upon intellectual engagement and good judgment, objectives this 15-day journey will help readers achieve. Teresa of Avila is a faithful mentor for anyone seeking a spiritual education.

Saint Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Carmelite nun and Doctor of the Church, withstood tremendous opposition to revive the primitive monastic rule and conditions of poverty, hardship and solitude for religious life. With Saint John of the Cross, Teresa became an influential spiritual director, leaving a legacy of classic writings that include The Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle, her most complete statement on prayer and contemplation.

Some psychologists claim that it takes 1 days to change a habit or establish a behavior. Isn’t it worth 1 days’ effort to become more grounded in the moment and capable of living fully and enjoying life with others and with God? Smollin wrote this small book to help readers discover who they truly are and foster an awareness of all the blessings that surround them. Within the ordinariness of daily life they can find graces clothed in the surprise and wonder of the beauty and blessings around them.

Includes black and white photographs by the author.

Each of us has a ray that burst forth from the Father’s heart when he spoke our name with the word Love. If we follow this ray, which is his will for us, what he lovingly desired, and continues in each moment to desire for us, we will become what we are in the mind of God from all eternity. It’s a matter of corresponding to his will, adhering to it, moment by moment, until the day when it will literally lead us back to the sun, to the Father…. Chiara notes how the rays draw nearer and nearer to each other until they become one in the sun. As we do the will of God, we will become closer and closer to each other, until we are all one in the sun, in God.

(From the introduction)

“The appearance in 1965 of Orthodoxy, a masterpiece of synthesis, was a landmark in religious publishing and earned for its author a doctorate of theology from the St. Sergius Institute in Paris. Paul Evdokimov here circumvents all scholastic theology on the one hand, and the traditional approach of the ‘Dogmatic’ theologians on the other, to develop an original synthesis of Orthodox theological thinking. Although he constantly quotes the Fathers, he does so creatively, so as not simply to repeat them, but to incarnate their spirit in our own time and for our future. In addition, he enriches Patristic thought by bringing to bear on it the two great movements that have occurred in Eastern Christianity: the theology of the divine energies in the 14th century which enlightened our understanding of the material world and human culture; and the Russian religious philosophy of the first half of the 0th century with its prophetic intuitions, its Pentecostal understanding of the modern world, and its vital eschatology. A theological approach in which the human intelligence progresses by an ascesis of repentance, of the great conversion of the heart, metanoia, is here set forth so as to show, or rather celebrate, the theosis or deification of the whole human person.... An understanding we might call eucharistic, gathering together and clarifying the experience of life in the Church, an understanding inseparable from the golden chain of holiness, including the holiness of intelligence, which the Church venerates in those whom she calls the ‘Fathers.’ ”

Paul Evdokimov (1901-1970), was a well-known writer, professor and lay theologian of the Orthodox Christian Church in France. As professor of moral theology and St. Sergius Orthodox Institute in Paris, a teacher at both the Ecumenical Institute in Geneva and the L’Institut Catholique in Paris, and official Orthodox observer at Vatican II, Evdokimov served as a bridge between the tradition of the Eastern Church and the Churches of the West.

A helpful, eloquent guidebook for learning how to pray with scripture, From Glory to Glory could be used for individual study, but is intended especially for small groups. It encourages scriptural/communal prayer as a path not only to personal holiness but to helping the community achieve its mission of reaching out to others. It offers abundant practical advice about starting a prayer group based on biblical readings. Texts are selected from the Gospel of John and the Letters of Paul.

McDonnell uses her knowledge and skill as a scripture scholar deftly to uncover the deeper meanings in John and Paul’s texts, which she has translated herself in clear and lively prose. Her frequent questions to the reader are pointed and provocative.

Perfect for homily preparation, RCIA, evangelization, or catechesis.

This book provides a window through which one might glimpse the Focolare Movement’s animating spirit and what it means for people who attempt to put its principles into practice in the context of daily life in the United States. It identifies questions that have emerged in the course of the Movement’s work as it intersects with ecclesial and cultural themes, and provides initial discussion to serve as a springboard for further and deeper reflection of these issues.

This work examines Mary, particularly as she stood at the foot of the cross, as a model for participating in a Trinitarian life of communion. O’Byrne outlines two theological themes at the core of Lubich’s thought – “unity” and “Jesus forsaken.” Upon this background she analyzes Lubich’s Mariology, from the moment of Mary’s first yes at the Annunciation to her second at the foot of the cross. O’Byrne then turns her attention to Lubich’s profound understanding of Mary in her desolation as an anthropological model.

“O’Byrne’s study, Model of Incarnate Love, addresses a fascinating area of systematic theology. She makes a significant contribution in a number of fields. These include Mariology, theological anthropology and the remarkable phenomenon of Chiara Lubich, the founder of the Focolare Movement.”

The Trinity and Creation are central themes in the theology of the Augustinian Canons of the Abbey of St. Victor during the twelfth century, when it flourished. In this volume, for the first time three of the most important Victorine theological works are introduced in complete English translations.

“The enormous productivity of the twelfth century canons of Paris’s Abbey of Saint Victor had a tremendous influence on the great scholastic masters of the thirteenth century like Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. Their contemplative spirituality, transmitted via the Low Countries, would also shape the Devotio Moderna and beyond. How fortunate, then, that New City Press will provide an English language series of translations of Victorine biblical exegesis, speculative theology, liturgical works, and mystical texts. Like the householder of the Gospel, the Victorines brought forth old things and new. We are the beneficiaries of those present day scholars who make these nova et vetera available to a wide audience in fresh reliable translation.”

15 Days of Prayer with Saint Clare of AssisiMARIE-FRANCE BECKERTranslated by SR. PACELLI MILLANE

To enter into a relationship with Clare of Assisi for fifteen days is to race along carried by the momentum of a woman burning with love. What a paradox: the cloister of Saint Damian — closed in upon itself — opens to the infinite. Clare, a pilgrim of the interior adventure, always re-directs her readers onto the road towards the Lord. The loving kenosis of Christ captivates her and incites her to a Passover, brisk as a dance step, on the path of happiness. The love that fills Clare with life springs forth like a fountain in her heart.

Of the different controversies that preoccupied Augustine during his lifetime, Pelagianism was indisputably the most important for the subsequent history and theology of the western Church. It touched on any number of issues central to Christianity, most notably grace, predestination, original sin and baptism, all of which in turn could be reduced to the fundamental question of the exact nature of the relationship between God and his human creation. The six major treatises presented in this volume amply illustrate Augustine’s struggle with the theological problems that Pelagianism raised. They begin with the Miscellany of Questions in Response to Simplician. Although written in 96, before Pelagianism even appeared on the scene, this work shows in a few pages the remarkable evolution of Augustine’s thought on the matter of grace and the position at which he arrived and to which he clung for the rest of his life. The two final treatises, The Predestination of the Saints and The Gift of Perseverance, written in 48/49 shortly before Augustine’s death, indicate where the position that he had elaborated more than thirty years before was fatefully destined to take him. The three middle treatises show Augustine in the process of refining — but not altering — his thinking in the face of what he rightly saw as Pelagianism’s terrible threat to orthodox Christianity’s central tenets.

“This new but old Commentary takes us out of the small, closed-minded world in which much modern biblical scholarship is done into an earlier time marked by a Christian seriousness, by robust inquiry and by believing faith. [La Biblia Comentada por los Padres de la Iglesia] is a fresh breeze blowing in our empty, post-modern world.”
