Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te
Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu – greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.
Matariki was celebrated by all in the school last week andculminated in performance of waiata and partaking of much lovely food!! Thanks to teachers who organised participation by their classes.
Te Aratanga Ki Te MataurangaThanks to Paige B (R1) the bridge between Erin Street andWillow Walk now has a name – Te Aratanga Ki TeMatauranga – The Pathway To Knowledge. Naming of the bridge has been a three year mission for Paige who beganwith a simple question, ‘What is the name of the bridge?’Little did she realise at the time she would be involved in
consultation with members of the community, leading adelegation to the Nelson City Council and attendingCouncil meetings. What a wonderful way to learn aboutlocal body processes! Congratulations and well donePaige.
Nelson Schools’ Cross Country LeagueCongratulations to children who represented our school inthe Nelson Schools Cross Country League. Thecompetition at successive levels gets more fierce and weare very proud of children who accepted the challenge of representing our school. Anyone who finished in the top 10in their race is a real hero/heroine so congratulations toThomas Z (R1) (8th) and Joey V (R2) (7th). Thomas andJoey have been selected to represent Tasman in the Inter Regional Cross Country Championships (Canterbury,Wellington, Tasman and Marlborough) to be held inHanmer Springs in September.
Enrolment SchemeThere is a lot of work to do yet but it is important that
school families know of the proposed change to schoolenrolment procedures. The board of trustees has beenrequired by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to start the process of putting in place an enrolment scheme. The
purpose of the scheme is to ensure that overcrowding in theschool does not occur. Based on data trends available toourselves and the MOE we could reach a proposed
maximum roll of 461 by about July 2011.We have yet to agree on a ‘home zone’ but the following is proposed: an area with its boundaries being RichmondAvenue extension, Brougham Street to Trafalgar StreetSouth, Trafalgar Street South, Nile Street East of theCathedral to Collingwood Street, Collingwood Street toHalifax Street, to Trafalgar Street to the intersection of Queen Elizabeth II and Atawhai, Drive and then to the hills.Areas bounded by this line and including the Maitai andBrook Valleys will be considered the “home-zone” for the purpose of this enrolment scheme.
We would like to receive comments from you on the proposed home zone..
For students currently enrolled in the school but who liveoutside any agreed ‘home zone’ there will be no change. Also, future siblings of currently enrolled students will beentitled to enrol in the school even if they live outside the‘home zone’.
One major change will be that children who do not livewithin the ‘home zone’ will not be able to enrol in theschool unless they enrol in a special programme run by theschool or if there is, from time to time, vacancies for out of
zone students. In our case, the special programme is our bilingual (Maori) unit, Te Pouahi. However, we are likely tolimit numbers in that unit to around 69.
An operative date could be as early as 1 September – moreon that later.
National StandardsIn this edition we have presented the first of two parts to themathematics National Standards for your interest.
Parent-Teacher InterviewsIn next week’s newsletter I will advise the code you willneed to make internet bookings for Parent-Teacher
interviews scheduled for 26-29 July. During interviewsteachers will discuss the first of two written reports on your child in relation to the National Standards. We believe it isimportant that these be delivered face-to-face to ensure youhave a chance to ask questions and to ensure there are nomisunderstandings about what is being reported. We alsowant to ensure we have your feedback so we can improvethe way we report to you.

SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 SUNDAY, 4 TH TH TH TH JULY 2010 JULY 2010 JULY 2010 JULY 2010 All Central School families are invited to join us on a walk to Whispering Falls. This was really successful last year. Meet at the Hackett Picnic Area, at the end of Aniseed Valley Road (left off the main road at Hope) at 11am. The walk is 1½ hours each way with a stop at the waterfalls picnic area for lunch. It’s a well graded
walk with a few bridges & a long swing bridge, which the kids find quite cool. Bring good footwear, your lunch and water.
Any further info phone Kathryn 5457009 Postponement date if wet - 11th July.
Some of you have been asking about our involvement in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine 2010. Well this yearwe are trying something different.
With the support of the student council we will be raising money for the Centre for Children's Happiness (CCH)
orphanages in Cambodia. The money will be spent on supporting their new school including exercise books, textbooks and shoes for the children. Apart from bank transfer charges all the money raised will go directly to the
orphanage and we will be able to receive photos and updates of how the items purchased are being used.
The challenge for our children is to eat the same meals as the children in the orphanage for one whole day. As
this does not require any fasting all the children at school will be able to take part if they so wish. Money will be
raised through the children gathering sponsors from family and friends and by donations. Check out the timetable
of events below. You can learn more about the school and the philosophy behind it on this YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC88saYuB4A). To find out more about the orphanages go to www.cchcambodia.org. If you have any
queries or ideas to support this event please pop in and see Tracy in Room 11.
