    The Gulf Coast Conference on Alcohol and Drug Abuse has become a significant annual event for the region, bringing together national resources and professionals in medicine, education, mental health, social work, nursing, counseling, law enforcement, business and industry.

    Each year this conference provides the latest in research and best practice information, as well as skills and tools that transfer directly to a counselor’s everyday work with clients. See our “Save the Date” notice at the bottom of the registration page.

    FEATURED SPEAKER Scott Alan Ketring, Ph.D., LMFTDr. Scott A. Ketring is an Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Auburn University, whose research interests focus on families living in poverty, couple relationships, and program services for diverse families. He has published over 40 articles and has authored a book on supervision in therapy. He has acted as Co-Pi on the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative, a DHHS five year and subsequent four year follow-up grant serving Alabama families throughout the state. He is the President of the Alabama Division for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He is one of the founding members of the Birmingham Recovery Network, a network of agencies and church groups dedicated to addressing poverty, substance abuse, and mental illness in the greater Birmingham area. He has also worked as a Program Evaluator for In-Home Family Therapy Services offered by Kansas Children’s Service League. He is a frequent speaker on the local, state and national levels for

    academic audiences in the areas of ethics, child abuse, training social service workers and therapists, and in-home family services. Dr. Ketring’s research interests focus on how the therapeutic relationship impacts couples and family therapy outcomes for those living in poverty.PresentAtion desCriPtion, sCott Ketring, Ph.d. : Suicide is near epidemic forcing clinicians, academics, and families to more closely focus those they treat or educate. Factors influencing suicide and more specifically how to differentiate suicide ideation and suicide attempts provide a valuable knowledge base. Myths will be dispelled using evidence based research from the last five years. The presentation will also emphasize potential warning signs for children whose family member commits suicide. The latest research in effective therapeutic approaches to interviews and treatment will be presented including an understanding of collaborative interviews versus psychiatric interviews. We will discuss treatment beyond the diagnosis and online support for understanding the treatment of suicide which is evidence based. Finally, we will discuss safety contracts, no harm contracts, and suicide assessments which can support a practitioners efforts provide good care.1.
