IBDP and PYP

IBDPThe International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) aims to develop students to have an excellent breath and depth of knowledge - students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. Through the six subject groups and core curriculum, grade 11 and 12 students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.

Primary YearsProgramme

PYPThe International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), for early childhood to grade 5, prepares students for the intellectual challenges of further education and their future careers, focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world.

New Additions to the ICS CampusSports PavilionThe sports pavilion was designed to provide additional PE, athletic and activity space (approximately 40 m x 70 m) for our students to augment our curricular and after school programs. There are four spaces that can be used simultaneously, for sports such as basketball, tennis, volleyball, or a large amount of space for gatherings and activities.

NCB - M BuildingThe new classroom block, a 9,500 sqm G + 4 floor building, includes 29 classrooms, administrative offices, a 200+ sqm indoor theater and assembly space, and roof top gardens. It also houses maintenance facilities, basement storage, the school copy center, business and finance/accounting offices and the teachers’ supply store. From ground breaking (February 2015) to ribbon cutting (June 2017), many months, weeks, and hours of diligent hard work were invested in this building, enabling it to be ready for students on the first day of classes, 14 August 2017!

The upper field hosted a second major building project throughout the year. The four clay tennis courts are now covered! A new sports pavilion (12 meters high, for indoor sports) with a resilient multisport floor is ready for volleyball, basketball, tennis and other sports for the next school year. Our PE curriculum and after school sports programs have room to expand now, and we can play there all through the rainy season as well as in the hot sun.

36% of our students were new this year, and 24% of our teachers. There are new students, new colleagues and new parents all the time, and we do a good job of welcoming and including them. I think it’s a hallmark of our school community.

It’s been gratifying and humbling to be a part of all this growth and improvement. From student learning to including diverse learners, to using modern technologies, to new building projects, to new learning programs, it seems there’s always something that is new or better at ICS Addis.

Students and teachers at the International Community School of Addis Ababa were very busy in 2016–17. In the following pages you’ll read more about student learning results, facts about the school year, student activities in and out of the classroom, and important steps and milestones.

BIG congratulations go to our elementary school leadership and teachers… ICS Addis is now authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP)! This program from the International Baccalaureate Organisation will help teachers organize and focus our inquiry-based teaching and learning programs, and will help us recruit good elementary teachers too.

Construction on the new classroom block (NCB) building project was ongoing throughout the school year; the crane, the busy workers, the noise. The NCB adds 29 classrooms, many with folding glass walls that open onto common spaces where students can work and relax together. The building also includes labs, teacher work spaces, administrative offices, rooftop gardens, basement storage rooms and workshops, and an indoor theater that will seat 200+ people. The NCB project is ready for use for the 2017-18 school year.

IB RESULTS

Why offer the DP?International research shows that there are many benefits to choosing the DP over other curricula. ICS is a member of the International School Sport Association of Addis Ababa (ISSAAA) and of the International Schools of Southern and Eastern Africa (ISSEA), under whose auspices we participate in a variety of sports, arts, and academic competitions. Adult- and student-led clubs and activities are available for students to pursue a wide range of interests, including several community service programs, student council, debate, drama, Model United Nations, and National Honor Society.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

The ICS Addis elementary school students and teaching staff took action during the 2016-17 school year, providing support to several partner organizations through both fundraising and direct service.

ICS has a long-term relationship with our neighborhood government school, Mekdela, and our interactions this year included:Ÿ Painting classrooms and other parts of the schoolŸ Providing school supplies to economically disadvantaged studentsŸ Providing three large trash cans to assist in keeping the grounds cleanŸ Collecting and donating booksŸ Professional development for over 70 teachers and administrators from Mekdela on different content areas to

help improve quality of student learning

In addition to the trainings provided for the Mekdela teaching staff, ICS also worked closely with the FGCF Project - Education Through Change, based in Bahir Dar. ICS teaching staff visited two project schools in Bahir Dar, where they modeled teaching techniques for math, English, Amharic, physical education and science. Seven teachers from FGCF schools spent three days at ICS shadowing our teaching staff and administrators.

Finally, our students worked to give back to their own school community by raising awareness about playground safety with the early childhood students and by caring for "Charlie", the lonely ICS fish, by purchasing a friend for him and cleaning his small pond.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

ICS is committed to social responsibility and giving back to our Ethiopian community. For many years ICS has had an ambitious and robust local merit scholarship program, inviting high academic aptitude and high achieving Ethiopian students to attend ICS.

While our program has evolved over the last 50 years, our philosophy and commitment to provide educational opportunities to our local community has not.

The Scholarship Program TODAY:ICS Addis grants four scholarships a year to high achieving grade 9 students from schools throughout Addis Ababa. Each scholarship covers full-tuition for four years, enrolling each scholarship recipient into ICS throughout high school. The scholarships are totally need-blind and based on merit.

Our scholars also star in, direct and produce the annual Amharic Play and host the Azmari Night and annual Community Garage Sale.

ICS manages a balanced budget, with no debt payments, until 2015 with the start of the New Classroom Block construction. While tuition and fees provide significant income, they are our only source of revenue. As enrollment growth continues to slow, we will need to seek alternative sources of income to continue to attract and retain the best staff possible, to ensure a high quality educational program and to continue to provide a well-equipped beautiful campus.
