UCAN/Oberling Scholarship Winners

New scholarship formation announced. The Schoonover and Bowman Scholarship

Class of 2013 offered $1.8 million dollars in scholarship money. Congratulations!

Notre Dame High School announces the 2013 winners of the UCAN/Oberling Family Scholarship: Blake Hazelbaker and Jacob Milani.. Blake plans to attend Shawnee State University where he will study psychology. Jacob will be attending The Ohio State University, majoring in pre-pharmacy. This year the scholarships were in the amount of $2,245.00 each. The UCAN/Oberling Family Scholarship was established in 2007 by Henry and Ann Oberling to help Notre Dame Students with the funds to help pay their college tuition. The UCAN scholarship program was established by the Scioto Foundation to help ensure that all students from Scioto County can afford to attend college. The Oberlings pledged $10,000 per year for a total of five years, which was matched by the Scioto Foundation. The Notre Dame Schools’ UCAN Endowment is now over $111,000.00 thanks to the generosity of the Oberling family and the match by the Scioto Foundation.

William Schoonover and Janet Peery Bowman have established The Schoonover and Bowman Endowment and Trust which will fund this new scholarship. Mr. Schoonover, a 1969 graduate of Notre Dame High School, is establishing this scholarship in memory of his dear wife, Donna and her loving grandmother, Dorothy Hacker Gee. Mrs. Bowman, a 1949 graduate of Holy Redeemer, is creating the scholarship in memory of her dear son, Steve Bowman.Donna Schoonover was a hospice nurse and her grandmother was a teacher. Steve Bowman worked in human resources and had his own business. Steve Bowman and Donna Schoonover both died from the same type of cancer. Janet’s daughter has also suffered from cancer twice. William and Janet’s hope is that this endowment will help discover a new and creative mind with the inspiration to crack the cancer code, develop a cure and end the misery and suffering from this disease for all future generations. This endowment will make funds available each year in the amount of $6,000.00 to help students in grades 7-12 at Notre Dame Junior Senior High with tuition. The Endowment should last at least 25 years.Guidelines and applications for the scholarship will be available on The Notre Dame Schools’ website at www.notredameschools.com

This year’s Sr. Lorenzo Thieken award goes to Anthony Wallace, Advanced and General Biology and General Science teacher. Mr. Wallace has taught at Notre Dame High School for 19 years. He is re-tiring this year. The award, which is made possible by the Rodney and Jeanne Kinskey Family Foun-dation, was started in memory of former St. Mary’s principal, the late Sr. Lorenzo Thieken. The recipient of the award is nominated by the seniors to honor the person who was most influential in their lives during their years in Notre Dame Schools. After the nominations are received, the school board presidents vote on the person they feel best meets the criteria of the award. This is the second time Mr. Wallace has received the award with the first being in 2005Mr. Wallace was honored for his guidance and leadership both in and out of his classroom.

Jacob Milani, son of Gino & Robin Milani has been named valedicto-rian of the 2013 Notre Dame High School graduating class and pre-sented the valedictory address during the Commencement Cere-mony on May 26 (Sunday) at Notre Dame High School Gymnasium.

A member of National Honor So-ciety, Milani has shown leader-ship as President of the Spanish Club, Key Club and Wendy’s High School Heisman. Jacob will be at-tending The Ohio State University and majoring in Biology this fall.

While at Notre Dame, he served as Class President and volunteered service through Notre Dame’s stu-dent senior service.

Jacob’s time at The Notre Dame Schools has provided a life time of memories and excellence that is brought through the commitment in making a difference in every child’s life.

This year’s Notre Dame Alumni award was presented to Joey Shannon

During graduation ceremonies on Sunday, May 26th, The Notre Dame Schools awarded Joey Shannon, Class of 1999, the Alumni Award for 2013. Joey, an accomplished artist, has generously donated his time and talent to provide the schools with artwork of various pillars of the religious community. This artwork has been used for the schools auction, “Bid Your Heart Out” for the past four years. His paintings have brought in over $60,000.00 for The Notre Dame Schools.

This year Notre Dame Elementary had several families affected by cancer. NDE came up with the idea of the “Titan Tennis Shoe Trail”, and students were asked to complete a paper blue/gold tennis shoe and make a donation to one of our families in need of support. They added a family or friends name to the tennis shoe and were proudly displayed them in the school hallways. The final total collected was almost $500. Also one preschool student was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. T-shirts were sold as well as a talent show, bracelets and hand bands were sold to help the family through this difficult time.

Notre Dame High School and Notre Dame Athletic Foundation are pleased to announce the grand opening of Notre Dame Community Center (formerly CAY building). The Notre Dame High School and the Notre Dame Athletic Foundation have formed a partnership that made it possible to create a community center for the deanery wide Notre Dame family after the closing of the CAY. The Notre dame Athletic Foundation has made significant updates to the building including the replacement of heating and air conditioning, roofing, lighting, audio visual components and kitchen repairs to name a few.

The Notre Dame Community Center will be used for weekly bingo sessions, deanery meetings, ND fund raisers, NDHS and NDES school functions and will be available for deanery parish events and rental for community events. So stop in and see the changes and we will see you at the next event!

Notre Dame High School Key Club collected over 10,000 can in this years can food drive. The canned food is distributed to over 17 local food panties around the county.

Notre Dame High School Class of 1962 recently held a 50 year class reunion. At the reunion, Therese Roth Colgan suggested the class sponsor a scholarship for one full year of tuition. With the cost of tuition to attend a private Catholic school, it is indeed a sacrifice for many to send their children to Notre Dame. Without additional funding through scholarships, many of those attending today would not be Notre Dame students. It is important that we support the current students with scholarship funds. Most of the graduates from Notre Dame in the past years have received generous scholarships from colleges for college tuition. This year 34 graduates were offered almost 2 million dollars in scholarships. A Notre Dame education offers financial rewards as well as a spiritual foundation.A $100 donation by each graduate from the class of 1962 was suggested by Ms. Colgan. Checks may be sent to the high school and made out to Notre Dame Class of 1962 Scholarship. Please mark them Attention: Patty Tennant.

Notre Dame Elementary partnered with the All American Soap Box Derby to implement their Gravity Racing Challenge Program where STEM learning meets derby track. Promoting the S.T. E. M. initiative (science, technology, engineering and math) in education through gravity racing, the Gravity Racing Challenge program is designed to provide educators and students with meaningful, project and standards based, intercurricular learning opportunities. Educators are successfully implementing the GRC program in classrooms, after-school, summer or enrichment programs and clubs worldwide.

Each class in Preschool through 2nd grade had their own small car kit. During school time students and teachers in those grades used the kits to build their own car. Plans to have the first Notre Dame Elementary Race in the Fall at school as a kick off to next years participation. The classroom cars went to Akron on May 17th to be raced. Mrs. Sanford’s first grade place 1st, Mrs. Hanes second grade placed 2nd and Mrs. Cardosi’s first grade class came in third place over all.

Third and fourth grades students teamed up as well as fifth and sixth to design and build two cars to take to the big race in Akron on May 18, 2013. Students who wanted to be part of the team had to dedicated some school time along with some after school time to complete the project. The students also had parent volunteers, Mr. Todd Book, Mrs. Angie Burke, Mr. Scott Isaac and Mr. Trace Liston. The project was funded by generous donators. It was a fun and exciting project, and Notre Dame Elementary was the first in our area to participate! Drivers were randomly chosen. Simon Harting a sixth grader, drove in the Super Stock Car class, and William Burke, a third grader, who drove in the Stock Car class. The team finished in fourth place and received a trophy showing off their accomplishments and hard work.

This was the first attempt at the fun and educational project, and all we can say is “Start your Engines” as we gear up for next years competition!

7 Tradition

Longtime elementary teacher retires from Notre DameEvery summer 2nd grade teacher Wanda Dengel, like all teachers at this time of year, cleans out her classroom at Notre Dame Elementary. This year is different. Looking through the letters written by her students over the years, and a faded ceramic plaque a student made for her 20 years ago, Dengel is packing up her classroom for the last time as she begins her retirement.

She started teaching in 1966. She and her husband moved to Scioto County in 1973 where she taught in the county schools for three years. She finally arrived at Notre Dame Elementary as a volunteer in 1993.

“When our oldest son started school here, I volunteered to do some things to help teachers because I just wanted my child to have the same advantages that I was giving children in the inner-city schools and to any children that I taught. My teaching mantra has been, ‘Always set your goals high because it’s easier to come down than it is to come up.’ That has been not only the goal I set for myself, but for my students as well,” Dengel said.

Twenty years later, Dengel said she has enjoyed the years she spent with the children and families at Notre Dame Elementary School.

“The memories that are most profound for me are those that have showed me that I have touched students’ lives. When I see a student that has internalized their learning, and they are so motivated that they go and do not just what you ask them but they go beyond because they are so eager to learn,” Dengel said. “When you hear those kinds of things, it makes you feel like you are doing the right thing. Because you never know. You hope to be a model for your students, but until you hear someone say something, you’re never sure.”

Notre Dame High School Anthony Wallace retires from teaching. As followers of Christ, we, much

After teaching for 27 years in the public schools and 16 years at Notre Dame High School, Mr. Anthony Wallace is retiring. At Notre Dame he taught General Biology, Advanced Biology and Physical Science. This year Mr. Wallace received the Sr. Lorenzo Thieken Outstanding Teacher Award given every year to a teacher who has motivated and inspired the students. This is the second time Mr. Wallace has received this award, with the first being in 2005.When Mr. Wallace was asked what he will miss most about teaching, he responded “the students, although I know that is a cliché”.After retirement he plans to catch up on projects around the home that went by the wayside or were put off as he worked. He also wants to spend more time with his family, which includes wife Janice, who is a retired speech therapist from Greenup County Schools, daughter Megan, an emergency room trauma nurse, and son Thomas who has a Masters in Special Education.Good luck and best wishes to Mr. Wallace.
