Hello to all.
I sincerely hope that you are enjoying this summer
as it comes to an end.
Many programs do shut down over the summer
months but we had a busy summer at the CJCC.
Film maker Warren P. Sonoda used the Centre for
auditions, rehearsals and shot a couple of scenes at
the Centre. This is for his independent film “The
things I do for money”. It stars Max and Theodore
Aoki as the heroes of this caper. They are the two
brothers that make up versaCello. The Aoki broth-
ers have supported the Centre on three previous
occasions and will once again perform for us at our
Annual Luncheon on Sunday, October 21. I would
like to thank April Takeda who took the lead on this
and ensured the Centre was available for the pro-
duction. We hope to have a screening of the movie
next year at the Centre.
2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the CJCC. We
are still firming up the details for our Gala; the
event will be on Saturday November 10 with return-
ing Chef Ken Lefebour. Please plan to attend.
I am calling out all program heads or a representa-
tive to please come out and volunteer at our annu-
al open house and special calendar events.
We are asking and need more participation from all
programs in order to sustain and maintain the
CJCCH and the existing programs. If we could get
just 2 or 3 representatives from each and every
program. That would be great.
I hope to see you all at the open house and don't
forget our 40th anniversary dinner event.
Thank you
Mitchell Kawasaki.

URGENT: BINGO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOW!
We have an urgent request for members of the CJCC.
We are very low in our pool of volunteers to run our Bingo sessions. The funds raised by Bingo are ap-proximately 20% of our annual operating expenses. We are in jeopardy of losing these sessions (and the income associated with the session) if we cannot provide enough volunteers to run the event.
We have only 2 sessions every 4 weeks: one is a Monday from 4:30pm—10:30pm; the other date is a Friday from 11:00am to 3:30 pm.
We have had a strong core of Volunteers that have run Bingo for the last number of years but their num-bers are declining. If you or any friends and family have the time to spare (only twice a month at the most), please contact the Centre via phone 905-383-5755 or email [email protected] and let us know you can help.
You can be trained ‘on the job’. The more volunteers we have in our pool means less work for everyone.
We cannot stress enough that we are desperate for Volunteers. We are at risk of losing the Bingo ses-sions and the income that comes with it. That, in turn, threatens the Centre’s future, due to our poor fi-nancial situation.

NAJC News 30th Anniversary of Japanese Canadian Redress Landscapes of Justice
30th Anniversary of the
Japanese Canadian Redress
On September 22, 1988 The Japanese Canadian Redress Agreement was signed. In the House of Commons, Prime Minister Brian
Mulroney acknowledged the government's wrongful actions; pledged to ensure that the events would never recur and recognized
the loyalty of the Japanese Canadians to Canada.
As a symbolic redress for those injustices the government offered individual and community compensation to the Japanese Canadi-
ans. Funds from the Japanese Canadian Redress foundation were used in Hamilton to establish the cultural centre -CJCC.
In acknowledgement of this historic agreement a gala is planned in conjunction with Toronto NAJC. The date will be November 8,
2018 at the Bell TIFF Lightbox. Please join us for this historic occasion to commemorate the settlement acknowledging
the injustices of the past, clearing the criminal records of those charged under the War Measures Act, restoration of Canadian Citi-
zenship to those exiled and the creation of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. We have confirmed Art Miki, Maryka Omatsu,
musical entertainment and other key individuals who were instrumental in the struggle for redress. Tickets will be $100 per person.
There is a free bus leaving from CJCC for anyone who buys a ticket

Landscapes of Injustice is a seven-year research project based at the University of Victoria with an office in the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives. The project is funded by the Social Sciences and Hu-manities Research Council of Canada and 15 partner institutions which include, among others, the Nikkei National Museum, Royal BC Museum, Canadian Immigration Museum Pier 21, Vancouver Jap-anese Language School & Japanese Hall, Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, four other academic institutions and the National Association of Japanese Canadians.
It is a unique partnership project, bringing together academics and community organizations to re-search the different aspects of the dispossession and forced sale of property owned by Japanese Ca-nadians during the 1940s. The project has just passed the midway point and is beginning to transi-tion from the Research phase to the Knowledge Mobilization phase.
Project Manager, Michael Abe will be on hand to give an overview of the project, outlining the re-search that has been undertaken and informing the audience of the plans to disseminate the results of the primary research to the Nikkei community and general public. This will also include a demon-stration of how the community can use the information to research their own history.
After a short refreshment break, Michael will be joined by Ilana Ross, an elementary school teacher in Toronto who has been testing our pilot lesson module in her Grade 5 class. She will share firsthand her experience with this interactive classroom activity and talk about some of the extraor-dinary results.
We will also give an update on the progress of the travelling museum exhibit that is currently being created from the Landscapes research by curators at the Royal BC Museum and the Nikkei National Museum. This museum exhibit will have a stop at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, one of the founding partners of the Landscapes project.
Question and answer period to follow. Free and open to the public.
