NORTH CREEK „ Superintendents and board members of the fi ve True North school districts recently met to discuss shar-ing services to keep costs and taxes down while maintaining scholastic standards for local children.

The districts „ Long Lake, Newcomb, Minerva, Indian Lake and Johnsburg „ already share many services. Just look at two of the sports teams for proof „ the Indian Lake-Long Lake Or-ange and the Minerva-Newcomb Mountaineers. At their April 29 meeting in the Long Lake Central School, district offi cials dis-cussed their past successes and explored new ways to share.

ñ ItÍ s amazing what we do with a handshake easily,î said Long Lake School Superintendent Mary Dickerson said. ñ ItÍ s a nice group of people to work with.î

School offi cials have had an open dialogue for six years, brand-ing themselves the True North districts, but have not met each year. This was the second year in a row that superintendents and school board members were invited. Newcomb School Superin-tendent Skip Hults attended the latest meeting and walked away with a renewed energy.

ñ I went there with my president, and we both thought it was very, very worthwhile,î Hults said. ñ One of the things we did realize was that we just canÍ t do this every couple of years and then get back together and hope to accomplish anything, that we need to do this several times a year.î

Washington County reportAs state and federal aid dry up, health care and retirement

costs rise, and New York’s tax cap forces school offi cials to make tougher decisions than ever, the seven Washington County dis-tricts decided that a new approach was needed. So they pooled their resources and published a study to look at ways to either create regional schools or consolidate and share services and resources. The Washington County School Districts Study was released in November 2012.

ñ As we become a more global society, the demands of the 21st century will require educational leaders, especially leaders of rural schools, to rethink delivery models and consider options beyond the traditional models that have long been used,î stated the report. ñ The challenge of being geographically isolated puts rural schools at a signifi cant disadvantage. The use of technol-ogy, distance learning, and shared educational services are es-sential for rural schools to explore in order to provide a well-rounded and diverse education for students.î

This report’s goal was to fi nd ways to:•Enhance educational programs;•improve the quality, effi ciency and/or scope of current ser-

vices;•and reduce operating and/or capital expenses.Rural schools face a unique set of challenges, according to the

study, including declining enrollment and demographic chang-es, while trying to share services, focus on improving academic and extracurricular programs and keep tax levies in check. The report concluded that a regional school approach may not be fea-sible for rural school districts and that sharing services is a more realistic solution. Many of the shared service ideas in the Wash-ington County report looked familiar to the True North school district superintendents.

ñ We already do a lot of shared services, and we are always improving those,î Dickerson said. ñ WeÍ re sharing things that the Washington County schools are just starting to look at. Some of the topics are sharing staff, which is already occurring, special ed services, the whole state testing/grading and scoring piece we do among us. We have a common bell schedule. ThereÍ s distance learning going on. We share professional development staff train-ings. We have merged sports teams. We share transportation.î

True North sharingThe agenda for the April 29 meeting listed many ways the

school districts already share costs:•Sharing of staff•Special education services (regional approach)•state testing/grading•Common bell schedule•Distance learning (DL) courses and trainings•Professional development for staff•Merged sports teams•Transportation•Food service•Sharing of equipment•Communications/superintendent meetings•BOCES services — True North identity•Regional school/community support — leveraging school

aid•Student events/activities — National Honor Society, prom,

student assembliesIn some instances, all districts share services. For example,

they all have the same common bell schedule. In other instances, most of the districts share services. All

schools but Johnsburg, for example, share a prom each spring. And yet other instances, only two districts share services. For

example, Indian Lake and Johnsburg shared a technology teach-er this year, and Johnsburg took in an Indian Lake special educa-tion student.

“We have to continue to see how the fi ve schools can work together to help lower costs,î said Johnsburg School Superinten-dent Mike Markwica. ñ When you have a tax cap, no longer are you creating a budget, and going out (to voters) with a budget increase as much as youÍ re going out with a tax levy increase.î

The futureThe 2013-14 tax levies and budgets were discussed at the meet-

ing, as were the international student programs at the True North districts.

ñ Now that weÍ re all approved, I think we should look at this differently, a regional approach to these kids,î said Indian Lake School Superintendent Mark Brand. ñ Try to get them together, try to get host families together. Even tuition. We donÍ t want to undercut Newcomb. Say they were charging $9,000. We donÍ t want to charge $5,000.î

School offi cials also discussed creating a regional Career & Technical Education (CT) program, which is traditionally offered through BOCES. Right now, Johnsburg, Indian Lake and Miner-va students must travel to Fort Edward for BOCES. Long Lake students travel to Saranac Lake. And Newcomb is too far away to make CT classes an option for students. Having a vocational program in one of the True North districts could be an option.

ñ I think itÍ s a great idea,î said Minerva School Superintendent Tim Farrell. ñ IÍ d be a bit surprised to see BOCES expand, but I don’t know. BOCES is going through a lot of the same fi nancial issues that local school districts are going through. Their pro-grams are shrinking just like our programs are.î

Even with the need, the True North school districts may be too small for a local vocational option.

ñ If you combine all of our student populations in our True North schools, it still doesnÍ t amount to an awful lot of kids,î Farrell said. ñ And as Mr. Markwica pointed out the other night, if we did have some type of North Country BOCES or VoTech program, and we specialized in building trades or boat building or marine craft, whatever it would be, whatever niche we would identify that would be purposeful, his thought was that he prob-ably would still have to transport kids down to the Hudson Falls program because they have 20 choices.î

If a local CT program was created, funding and administration would most likely fall on the backs of the True North districts, Farrell added.

The Minerva superintendent said the latest meeting of the True North districts showed a collective concern for school fi -nancing and fi nding creative ways to maintain good schools in the age of the tax cap.

ñ A meeting like that reminds us of all the good things we are doing individually and collectively for the kids in this region,î Farrell said, ñ and it provides an opportunity for us to keep that door open as we continue to talk about sharing staff and creating new programs that are needed in the region but doing that in a shared way so itÍ s affordable.î

One of the major successes of this collaborative effort is the branding of the ñ True Northî school districts.

ñ WeÍ re getting more attention as a group than we necessarily would be as an individual school district,î said Indian LakeÍ s Brand. ñ What else can we do? ThatÍ s always out there. IÍ m not sure weÍ ve reached the limit, but weÍ re always looking for more ideas.î

True North districts meet, discuss shared services

JOHNSTOWN „ The Hudson River Rafting Company, based in North Creek, can resume guiding trips under certain restrictions accord-ing to a ruling handed down by the State Su-preme Court in Johnstown.

According to Elizabeth Debold, media coor-dinator for Attorney General Eric T. Schneider-man, a decision handed down on May 15 de-termined the Hudson River Rafting Company and owner Patrick Cunningham may resume guiding in New York as long as the company posts a $50,000 performance bond to help pre-vent further violations.

The company was also ordered to pay $12,000 in civil penaltyÍ s for each of the 10 documented instances where employees were either issued tickets for guiding without a license or for op-erating a bus without the appropriate license.

According to the decision issued by State Supreme Court Justice Richard Giaradino, the court threw out a motion that the Hudson River Rafting Company engaged in false and misleading advertising. The ruling also per-manently prohibits the company from renting

rafts, kayaks or any similar type of watercraft for customers to ñ captain their own boatsî on rivers where a licensed guide is required.

The courtÍ s ruling lifts a restraining order against the North Creek companyÍ s license to guide that was issued after the drowning death of a client, Tamara Blake, 53, of Columbus, Ohio, in September 2012.

Hudson River Rafting Company guide Rory K. Fay, who was guiding the raft Blake fell out of, was determined to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. He pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and two other charges in No-vember.

An investigation into the practices of Hud-son River Rafting Company found that rafting

guides working for the company did not have proper licenses and their actions were negli-gible.

Debold said the Attorney General’s offi ce be-lieves the ruling will be a positive step to en-courage safe practices by New York guides.

ñ We think this is a really great win for New Yorkers,î Debold said. ñ It allows them to go back and improve their business practices and protect consumers from unsafe conditions.î

Beginning in 1981, Hudson River Rafting Company was one of the fi rst companies to offerrafting trips on the Hudson, Black and Sacanda-ga rivers and the companyÍ s years of experience were noted by Giaradino.

According to the Attorney General’s offi ce there are no further charges pending against Cunningham or the Hudson River Rafting Com-pany at this time and once the company posts the bond, they can resume business. However, should Cunningham or the Hudson River Raft-ing Company violate the judgeÍ s injunction, it will be considered contempt of court.

The status of the DEC restraining order im-posed on the company last fall was unclear as of press time May 22.

Calls to Cunningham and his lawyer, Jason Britt, were not returned as of press time.

Judge: Hudson River Rafting company can resume runs

Memorial Day will be observed through-out the North Coun-

try, but this weekend belongs to the community of Crown Point. For 145 years it has been mark-ing the occasion, every year since the end of the Civil War, each year a little bigger and bet-ter.

It may be the longest continu-ous Memorial Day event in the nation.

ThatÍ s the way it should be since Crown Point men played a prominent role in the founding of the Memorial Day holiday.

Originally known as Decora-tion Day, Memorial Day began in the south after the Civil War. In-spired by the bravery displayed in the battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest fi ght in American his-tory with nearly 55,000 causali-ties, southerners began to decorate the graves of the war dead with fl owers as a sign of respect and appreciation.

The custom quickly spread to the north, where people were just as impressed with the gallantry shown at Gettysburg and throughout the Civil War. New York became the fi rst state to offi cially recognize Memorial Day in 1873.

Crown Point can and should take pride in its own contributions to freedom. Men from Crown Point were at Gettysburg„ a monument stands to their unit there. More than 100 men from Crown Point, an amazing number from a community of its size, formed Company H of the 5th New York Cavalry under the command of John Hammond (A monument to Hammond stands in Crown PointÍ s Forrestdale Cemetery.). The unit distinguished itself throughout the Civil War.

Crown Point men also fought in Adirondack Regiment, 118th N.Y., seeing action in many of the Civil War Í s bloodiest battles.

And those brave souls werenÍ t alone. Crown Point has contributed to each and every American confl ict, sometimes making the ultimate sacrifi ce.

This year Í s Memorial Day celebration will be held May 26 and 27.Crown Point’s festivities will include an ecumenical church service, a parade, fi reworks, amuse-

ment rides, entertainment and vendors. But itÍ s important to note the community understands the signifi cance of Memorial Day. Each year’s observance is built around the town’s traditional ñ solemn cemetery tour.î

The tour includes stops at each of the communityÍ s cemeteries, where Boy Scouts present the colors, ñ Tapsî is played, the school chorus sings and a speaker notes the importance of the place and people buried there. The tour concludes at the Veterans Monument in the town park at noon.

This year’s Memorial Day in Crown Point carries added signifi cance. Crown Point is celebrating the 225th year of its founding.

Congratulations to Crown Point for 225 years of history and for 145 years of reminding us of the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Is it just that the lure of a second presidential term is so unlike any-

thing else that administrations will do anything to secure it? The Nixon Administration in 1972, had the election all but sewn up. Breaking into the Democratic National Commit-tee offi ce was more than dumb and the coverup that followed was far worse than the bun-gled break-in.

There is no evidence, as of yet, that any of these scandals will lead completely back to the Oval Offi ce but the comparisons to Nixon are inevitable. The president has suddenly found himself dealing with several scandals all at once, including the fallout from the Benghazi terror attack, the Justice Depart-mentÍ s seizing of phone records from the Associated Press and the Internal Revenue ServiceÍ s policy of singling out Tea Party and other groups for scrutiny.

Many have drawn comparisons to the Nixon White House when looking at the blossoming scandals arising currently. While President Nixon did, indeed, use the IRS to target political enemies, his motives remain unclear. It has been assumed it was to avenge friends and supporters who had been target-ed by the IRS under prior administrations.

While President Obama has called the IRS targeting of conservative organizations ñ out-rageous,î and late Wednesday announced the resignation of acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller, who was previously required to leave the offi ce in a few weeks regardless of the presidentÍ s actions, investigations are just now getting under way. The sad reality is like Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton and Bush, it seems second terms somehow get bogged down with defending missteps and allegations of wrongdoings.

Defending the actions of an over confi -dent White House has consumed previous administrations and now the Obama White House will need to defend its actions. If weÍ ve learned anything from the past, we can be assured these investigations wonÍ t go away anytime soon as they become political footballs that will likely be discussed for the balance of ObamaÍ s term. A CNN/ORC poll found that 54 percent of Americans donÍ t

believe that Congress is over-reacting to the IRS scrutiny of conservative groups. By an even larger margin, 59 percent said Congress is making the right moves on the adminis-trationÍ s actions regarding the Benghazi terror attack. ThatÍ s all the motivation both sides need to get the press corps re-energized to begin actively pursuing conspiracy theories and cover ups.

The poll became public, and the battle lines continue to be drawn as White House

Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer made the rounds of last SundayÍ s talk shows, defending Presi-dent Obama.

ñ HereÍ s the cardinal rule ƒ for all White Houses,î Pfeiffer said, ñ you do not interfere in an independent investigation, and you do not do anything to give off the appearance of interference in an independent investiga-tion.î

Conversely, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the White House might not have commanded Internal Revenue agents to target conservative groups, but a ñ culture of intimidation throughout the administra-tionî made them think it was acceptable. The president of The Associated Press says the governmentÍ s seizure of AP journalistsÍ phone records was ñ unconstitutionalî and already has had a chilling effect on news gathering. Gary Pruitt, speaking on CBSÍ ñ Face the Nation,î said the Justice Depart-mentÍ s secret subpoena of reportersÍ phone records has made sources less willing to talk to AP journalists.

LetÍ s have a president serve one, six-year term, be totally focused on the job at hand, and remove the time lost traveling around the nation for 18 months campaigning for the right to validate the fi rst term with a second term.

Simply put, the power of the presidency, the desire to retain that power and the legacy of not being reelected creates far too great an opportunity to see overzealous subordinates cross the line and create scandals that dis-tract the nation.

New York State school records indicate that the Town of John-sburg had six school districts

operating in 1821, totaling 223 children ages 5 to 15 years old. By 1896, the dis-tricts increased to its largest number of 21. The school houses were placed in the hamlets so that the children could walk a mile or two to get there.

By the mid 1890s, talk began of con-structing a centrally located school for students in the 7th grade and older. Three overcrowded districts „ the Railroad Depot, Durkin Road, and Holcombville

„ were consolidated to form the Union School. Also referred to as the North Creek High School, the two-story building was constructed on the current school lo-cation and opened for instruction in 1897. The school had four large classrooms and a student fortunate enough to secure a desk on the east side of the building was treated to the view of a vast landscape void of any houses. Known as ñ StraightÍ s Flats,” it’s now fi lled with houses and

streets and the airstrip. In 1925, the Union School was replaced

by a much larger brick and mortar school built in its place. The local newspaper an-nounced the laying of the corner stone for Oct. 18, 1925. The small and numer-ous school districts scattered throughout the hamlets were eventually consolidated into Johnsburg Central School. Additional space was added to the school building in 1953, 1963, 1996 and 2006.

GLENS FALLS „ While the stateÍ s economy is rebounding from the recent deep economic recession, the Adirondack region has continu-ing challenges, state Comptroller Thomas Di-Napoli told area leaders Monday during a visit to Glens Falls.

DiNapoli gave a speech and answered questions at a breakfast held May 19 at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls. About 90 lo-cal politicians, entrepreneurs and economic de-velopment offi cials attended the event, hosted by the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Com-merce.

New York State as a whole, he said, is gradu-ally climbing back out of the recession, he said.

ñ WeÍ re on the road to recovery „ but weÍ re not moving forward like gangbusters „ weÍ re not generating the kind of job growth weÍ d like to see.î

DiNapoli noted the Glens Falls metropolitan region in March had an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent, equal to the stateÍ s level „ but un-like the entire state, the Glens Falls metro area has only recovered 25 percent of the jobs it lost during the recession. The state had a net in-crease of 350,000 jobs over the past three years, he said.

While job growth has been relatively strong overall in the state, itÍ s been primarily with businesses and industry, and not in government or schools, which have experienced substantial downsizing, he said.

Region faces special problemsDespite the statewide economic rebound, a

variety of issues are exerting fi nancial stress to municipalities, residents and businesses in the Adirondacks, he said.

ñ There are unique challenges in this part of the state including environmental issues,î he said. noting how a balance was necessary be-tween economic development and environmen-tal protection.

In addition, the population in the Adiron-dack Park is declining, and the Park residents remaining are aging and requiring more servic-es, at a time government revenue is declining, he said.

ñ Each part of the state has its own challeng-es,î he continued.

However, things are looking up in Warren County, he said, noting that retail sales are up, resulting in a 2.6 percent increase in sales tax revenue for 2012.

Fiscal pressures on state, county and local governments are bound to continue, DiNapoli predicted, noting that federal aid has been cut while costs are increasing. ñ Financial stress is not a passing phase,î he remarked, adding how no real progress has been made on mandate

relief. “Diffi cult choices on spending will con-tinue.î

ï Fiscal StressÍ system ramping upDiNapoli said his agency is launching a re-

search and outreach program that analyzes mu-nicipalities’ fi nancial data and identifi es those at risk of bankruptcy or default.

This fi scal stress monitoring system, he said, would provide an early warning of substantial fi nancial problems he said, noting the Comp-troller’s offi ce will be publishing the list.

“This is not meant to be fi nger-pointing, but to inform and engage the local taxpayers and citizens so they can provide more thoughtful input,î he said.

Pension cash for NY enterprisesDiNapoli noted that his offi ce had established

the In-state Private Equity Program to steer in-vestment money from the state pension fund to help local businesses either start up or expand and prosper „ or assist out of-state businesses in moving to New York State.

This program, he said, has already resulted in $641 million being invested to date in 246 companies across the state, including $22 mil-

lion for Navilyst (recently acquired by Angio-Dynamics) in Glens Falls, he said.

ñ WeÍ re trying to recycle state pension fund dollars right back into the stateÍ s economy,î he said.

DiNapoli: ï claim your cashÍAlso, DiNapoli touted his agencyÍ s program

of publishing names of those due unclaimed funds held by the sate „ a total of $12 billion belonging to individuals and businesses, culled from checks left uncashed from as long ago as 1940.

To make his point, DiNapoli hauled out three giant checks to local entities refl ecting their bal-ances existing now in his offi ce’s Unclaimed Funds depository.

He presented a check of $200 to the Adiron-dack Regional Chamber of Commerce repre-sented by Peter Aust, ARCC President; $651.83 to the Glens Falls National Bank represented by its president, Thomas Murphy, and $532 to the City of Glens Falls „ with Sen. Little accepting the check.

Later, Queensbury Supervisor Ron Mon-tesi asked DiNapoli about whether his offi ce tracked how much state Lottery revenue actu-ally bankrolled public education, its original stated purpose.

Answering for DiNapoli, Sen. Little said that sum was $3.4 billion for 2012.

DiNapoli said that state Lottery revenue was

deposited in the state General Fund, out of which state Aid for education was drawn.

ñ ItÍ s an accounting mechanism,î he said. DiNapoli was also asked if a dollar value had

been calculated refl ecting the actual benefi ts stemming from the tax breaks and incentives awarded Global Foundries.

ñ I canÍ t give you hard numbers, but eco-nomic development experts saw it as a great opportunity,î he said about the multi-billion chip-fabrication development based in Malta, and the spin-off high technology industries at-tracted to the Capital Region. ñ Their objectives are now being fulfi lled in a positive way.”

After DiNapoliÍ s 90-minute presentation, Warren County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kevin Geraghty praised the state Comptroller for his outreach to Warren County.

ñ DiNapoli is an effective advocate for local communities, and showing up here is a good thing for the region,î Geraghty said.

State Assemblyman Dan Stec of Queensbury said he supported DiNapoliÍ s commitment to reinvesting pension fund cash into in-state businesses.

“Investing in New York businesses benefi ts the stateÍ s economy and creates jobs,î he said, adding that any area business with a qualifying need should contact him or Sen. Little as well as DiNapoli for potential assistance. ñ ItÍ s a great idea and a win-win situation.î

DiNapoli: NY economy rebounding, nancial stresses persist

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli answers a question posed at a breakfast event held Monday May 20 at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls. Although express-ing positivism that an economic rebound was under way, DiNapoli warned that New York State and its municipalities were likely to experience continued nancial stresses. He also spoke of a new initiative to reinvest in local businesses — in order to spur job growth within the state.

Saratoga & North Creek RR plan events for 2013

NORTH CREEK — The Saratoga & North Creek Railway announces hosting several themed train excursions and new special events beginning this spring and running through October. In addition to their wildly successful Polar Express which begins in mid-November, the SNCRR will run special excursion trains and onboard events for Memorial Day, Father Í s Day, Leviathan No. 63 Steam Engine weekend packages, a Teddy Roosevelt Tribute Weekend in September, as well as the return of the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Patch Express in October.

Memorial Day Weekend sees the return of SNCÍ s ñ Veterans Ride FREEî program. Program in-cludes all active and retired military riding the train May 25-27. Military uniforms (attire) encour-aged. (Not all veterans can get into their uniforms anymore.)

On Sunday, June 16th, SNC is rewarding dads with a special ñ Fathers ride for FREE with a paid child ticketî . ItÍ s a great way for the kids to treat dad to a special day out. These trains will depart North Creek and Saratoga Springs and use the regular posted timetables which may be found on SNCRR.com.

September ushers in historic themes with the fi rst two weekends featuring an exclusive New York State visit of the Leviathan No. 63 steam engine. This faithfully recreated version of the 1868 steam engine which was originally manufactured at the Schenectady Locomotive Works. A must ride for every train enthusiast with photo opportunities along the rail corridor. Check the SNCRR website for times and places.

A major three-day themed special event weekend is being planned around the famous ride that Theodore Roosevelt took from the historic North Creek Depot station on September 13, 1901. Na-tionally acclaimed TR reprisor Joe Wiegand will ride the train and present informal talks about our 26th President. Special events, activities and entertainment will be staged in the Depot and river-front area in North Creek throughout the weekend of September 13-15. Plans are solidifying now and more information will be released over the coming months on the train website at SNCRR.com.

Once again plans are also underway with partnering with 1000 Acres Ranch Resort in Stony Creek for the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Patch Express on October 19 & 20th. The ranch resort is directly on the rail line which makes it a perfect location to host this family-friendly day outing to pick pumpkins and visit with talking scarecrows along with a myriad of other fun events and activities staged by train and ranch staff. Watch for more details to be announced soon for the Pumpkin Patch Express. The 2012 Pumpkin Patch Express train sold out well before the event.

For reservations and additional information regarding events, train schedule, and directions visit us at www.SNCRR.com or call our toll free reservations desk at 877-726-7245.

Indian Lake is extremely fortunate in many ways. We are home to great birding, camping, biking, hiking, ca-

noeing and whitewater rafting activities. Did you know Indian Lake is the ñ Whitewa-ter Capital of New York State?î

It is, and because of this claim to fame, itÍ s only appropriate Gov. Cuomo chose Indian Lake as the location for his 1st Inaugural Adirondack Challenge. Thank you, Gov. Cuomo.

On July 21, two important races will also be taking place in Indian Lake „ an invita-tional Whitewater Race and Adirondack Flat Water Paddle Challenge, an international 15 mile canoeing event. In addition, a family fun festival, complete with childrenÍ s games, New York state food, beer and wine vendors, and continuous live music will be held in Byron Park. On the way to Byron Park, visi-tors will participate in numerous activities and events in and around town. The Town and Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce are currently planning activities and events for

a weekend of Adirondack fun. While plans have yet to be fi nalized, one can expect an array of festivities for folks of all ages from one end of town to the other. Sidewalk sales, Adirondack crafts and artisans, demonstra-tions, food, music, square dancing, beer and wine tastings, and more are just a few of the ideas being arranged.

The Adirondack Challenge is expected to draw 3,000 or more visitors to our area. Are you ready? Be ready to fi eld calls for accom-modations, dining, shopping and recreation-al activities. Where can you go to fi nd infor-mation like this quickly and easily „ www.indian-lake.com.

Is your community hosting an event be-tween July 13 and 21st? If so, contact the Hamilton County Tourism offi ce to see if your event can be marketed as part of the Adirondack Challenge by emailing [email protected].

Vendor space is available for anyone wish-ing to promote their craftsmanship in town on the school lawn. We are particularly in-terested in Adirondack made products and artisans. Please contact me at [email protected] for more details.

What can you do to help? We will need ñ all hands on deckî if we are to coordinate and host a memorable event „ one that will bring visitors back year after year to this event, or one of our other festivals, such as the Christmas Country Tour or Snocade. Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce needs your help. We need volunteers to help be-fore, during and after the Adirondack Chal-lenge. Please contact our offi ce to share your ideas and offer your services by calling 518-648-5112 or emailing [email protected].

OLD FORGE „ The North CountryÍ s Gibson Brothers are maintaining world-class caliber performances this spring while promoting their newest album thanks to a succession of profes-sional guests on the mandolin.

In mid-April, mandolin player Joe Walsh announced he was parting ways with Ellenburg Depot natives Eric and Leigh Gib-son after being with the band for more than four years. It came at a challenging time, as the Gibson Brothers began the busy fes-tival season on the road without Walsh. They also began tour-ing with a new CD, ñ They Called It Music,î recently released by Compass Records. Then thereÍ s the added pressure of being the 2012 IBMA Entertainers of the Year, an honor the brothers recog-nize but take in stride.

As their song ñ They Called It Musicî topped Bluegrass To-dayÍ s weekly chart for airplay on May 17, the Gibson Brothers were taking the stage at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge with guest mandolin player Jesse Cobb, formerly of the Infamous Stringdusters, who gave a ñ blisteringî performance, as Leigh de-scribed it. Cobb will be fi lling in on a few more dates, as will Si-erra Hull, until the brothers choose WalshÍ s replacement. Adam Steffey will also be playing mandolin with the Gibsons and was with them this week at Bluegrass & BBQ in Branson, Mo.

ñ We are using different award-winning mandolin players for the next month,î Leigh said in an email. ñ I wanted to make sure we had a quality performer with us while we decided who would take over the job without rushing to a decision. While you can never be certain someone will be the right answer for the long term, giving ourselves time to fi nd the next player can only help make a better call.î

Using a variety of mandolin players takes the pressure off of fi nding a full-time player right away, according to Leigh, who expects to have a new member in place by July.

ñ But for now IÍ m having fun getting to know and work with some incredible pickers,î Leigh said.

The performance in Old Forge was a homecoming of sorts for the Gibson Brothers, who were playing to a crowd of longtime fans and paddlers. Old Forge is on the southern end of their home turf in New YorkÍ s Adirondack Park and hosted the an-nual Paddlefest this past weekend.

Both Clayton Campbell on the fi ddle and Mike Barber on up-right bass joined Eric and Leigh. Campbell has been with the Gibsons for nine years, and Barber for 20.

ñ Because of that, we allowed him this year to get married,î Leigh said of Barber, who also co-produces albums with the brothers. ñ So heÍ s going to do that this fall.î

Their set began with ñ Help My Brother,î title track to the 2011 IBMA Album of the Year. It was followed by a collection of songs from past albums, such as ñ Safe Passage,î ñ The Open Road,î

ñ Farm of Yesterday,î ñ Dreams That End Like This,î ñ Just LovinÍ You,î ñ Red Letter Day,î and ñ WalkinÍ West to Memphis.î It also featured music from their new album, including ñ The Darker the Night, the Better I See,î ñ Dying for Someone to Live For,î ñ Buy a Ring, Find a Preacher,î and the title track and the GibsonÍ s cur-rent No. 1 hit, ñ They Called It Music,î which Eric co-wrote with Joe Newberry.

ñ There arenÍ t really singles in bluegrass music. Deejays play whatever they like to play,” Leigh said during the concert, fi lling the time while Eric tuned his banjo. ñ This is the one theyÍ re play-ing the most, so itÍ s kind of the song thatÍ s charting for us. I canÍ t believe it; I’ve written things for the record, and they’re not really charting. But this one of EricÍ s is. Maybe thereÍ s still some payola out in the world EricÍ s using up.î

Leigh told a story about the songÍ s beginning and how New-berry, of Raleigh, N.C., once spent some time picking with an elderly banjo player up in the hills.

ñ And he asked him, ï This style of playing that you do, when you were playing it years ago, did they call it country music, did they call it bluegrass, folk, old time, whatÍ d they call it?Í And the fellow said, ï Son, they called it music,Í î Leigh said. ñ Two months

later, a lightning bolt fi nally clicked with Eric. It took him a while to fi gure it out. He said, ‘There’s a song in that.’ So he wrote it.”

Eric also wrote the album’s fi nal track, “Songbird’s Song,” which was the result of a three-day insomnia attack when the Gibson Brothers traveled to Denmark in 2012.

“When we fi rst got there, I was so tired,” Eric said on stage. ñ I said, ï IÍ m just going to take a little nap.Í And he (Leigh) said, ï DonÍ t do it.Í He said, ï YouÍ re going to mess yourself up. DonÍ t do it.Í And I said, ï DonÍ t tell me what to do.Í And he was right. I slept about four hours or so.î

ñ He was walking the streets of Denmark,î Leigh added. ñ He knew where every hot dog stand was in Copenhagen.î

The Old Forge concert was co-sponsored by Saratoga Guitar, operated by longtime musical friend Matt McCabe, of Saratoga Springs. Their encore performance was ñ Holding Things Togeth-er,î a tribute to Merle Haggard and symbolic of how the Gibson Brothers are getting along without Joe Walsh during their 2013 tour.

For more information, visit the band online at www.gibson-brothers.com.
