TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 82 LOW: 73 By FRED SWIFT For Indiana's Bicentennial a new condensed history entitled 'Road Trip, A Pocket History of Indiana' is on bookstore shelves this summer. The author is Andrea Neal, an accomplished writer with deep Hamilton County roots. The book, an easy and interesting read, is a publication of the Indiana Historical Society Press. In the 247 page paperback, Neal presents the highlights of Indiana history in such a way that the reader comes away with the feel- ing they have completed a course in the state's 200 year journey in just a couple of hours. Three events in Hamilton County figure in the book. Neal points out that an 1820 state-appointed commission charged with find a site for a state capital met at William Conner's home to begin a detailed search of central Indi- ana, finally deciding of the present site of Indianapolis. A section is devoted to the founding of Roberts Settle- ment in Jackson Township. Free Blacks from North Caro- lina settled there in 1830s to escape the fear of persecution. A photo of the historic Roberts Chapel is included. And, the rise and fall of D.C. Stephenson's powerful Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s is reviewed along with a photo of the former county jail. Stephenson was held there while being tried in Hamilton Circuit Court for murdering his girlfriend. His conviction marked the downfall of the Klan statewide. Neal, currently a history and English teacher in India- napolis, is the daughter of Jim and Georgianne Neal, long- time Hamilton County residents now living in Marion County. Andrea Neal comes by her writing interest and skill somewhat naturally. The Neal family was involved in newspaper publishing in Noblesville for generations. Andrea began her career in journalism with UPI news service after graduation from Brown University. She was with the Indianapolis Star for several years, serving as a reporter, columnist and editorial board member. She then entered teaching several years ago at St. Richard's Acade- my. She has two adult sons. Ms. Neal dedicates her 'Road Trip' to "Mom, Dad and Dede, three of the proudest Hoosiers I know." (Dede is Andrea's sister.) Neal takes readers on a ‘Road Trip’ of Indiana history Do you love bluegrass music? Mark your calendars now for a great family event on the hillside lawn terrace of Sheridan’s Veterans Park. Hi Irsquom Alexa AkersAnd Irsquom Josie GriffinTogether wersquove swam all year round 16

hours a week for a total of 17 yearsWersquove had coaches that have made a

huge impact on our lives wersquove had obsta-cles that have changed our path andteammates that will be our friends for alifetime

And thatrsquos what brings us to where weare today Our last year of swimming Thefirst last thing on our list is this yearrsquosSenior Trip So far the trip has been abittersweet experience We have opportuni-ties to make a difference through leadershipand decision making but it is also our lastyear to train with our best friends

So thatrsquos who we are and thatrsquos whywersquore here Letrsquos move on to the fun stuffJ

Yesterday we arrived at the SouthwestTerminal gathered by grade and made ourway to security This was the first timewersquove flown to our destination for this tripin a while Many people had never flownbefore Fortunately everyone made itthrough alive except for a few bottles ofsunscreen

I was lucky enough to get TSA Pre-Check but accidently stole my pass

My teammates (Sophie and Brooke) andI had the job of comforting Josie while shehad an emotional breakdown about the factthat she was in a metal tube hurdling over400 mph through the atmosphere

Hey itrsquos a reasonable fear Somehowwe made it to Tampa and I had only sheda couple tears The first thing we noticedwas how hot it was The second thing wenoticed was how tan everyone was It wasa little intimidating

After a little bit of a wait we climbedinto our vans and headed to our hotel TheSeniors our grade jammed out to trashymid-2000s songs and Josie was forced to siton the floor It was a riot Everyone was ina rush to unpack and get to the beach but Iwas more concerned with what we weregoing to have for dinner

In years past we had always gotten ahotel that fit our budget I bet you canguess what that means So this year wewerenrsquot expecting anything fancy Manwere we wrong No one could stop talkingabout all the fun things to do within 100feet of our rooms Pool tables pools giantcircular chairs graffitied Jenga blocksand of course the beach In awe of oursurroundings we headed to dinner

Dinner was a bit of a shocker for every-one Rich our coach said the main coursewas pulled pork but we didnrsquot see pulledpork anywhere in that room Instead wesaw a dead but fully intact roast pig lyingon the buffet table for all eyes to see

There was some talk of ordering apizza but unfortunately no one (literallyor figuratively) delivered Instead we latermade a trip to 7-11 for some snacks and amakeshift dinner

It was finally beach time Everyone puton their fun suits and took a minute longwalk to the shore Of course another one ofour teammates Gavin brought his guitar andjammed by the water Lo and behold adrunk and emotionally compromised manwandered over from the bar and handed ourfriend $200 and walked away sobbing Weall celebrated our victory by burying Soph-omore Evan Diamente in the sand

We saw wedding photos being takenhad a brief ldquoshark scarerdquo and met a tinymonkey But we didnrsquot come here to justhang out We moved on to our first teammeeting where we discussed the word

ldquopassionrdquo We and our teammates knewthe meaning of the word after waking upat ungodly hours for most of our lives Theteam talked about why we starting swim-ming who inspires us and what we loveabout the sport today Some of the chaper-ones who used to swim including Alexarsquosmom shared their passion for the sportOverall we all renewed our love for swim-ming and were brought closer as a team

And just like that our first day wasover Just kidding We had to terrorize therookies Each year itrsquos a tradition that thosewho have never attended the trip beforehave to show their ldquostupid human trickrdquo tothe whole team I won my freshman year bylicking my elbow Some featured acts of thenight included card tricks contortion weirdvoices and the winner- the winnerrsquos abilityto stick an entire straw up his nose

After ending the night with laughs andclaps we made our way to our bed It wasa great first day We certainly made mem-ories and we canrsquot wait to make more

Tomorrowrsquos another day with our bestfriends and we canrsquot wait to tell you how itgoes
