New Member Highlight

Welcome to our newest Heartland Member!

Kris Loberg

Kris is a Regional Sales Manager with Assurity in Lincoln, NE, and her industry focus is on Workplace Voluntary Benefits. She actually resides in Omaha and commutes to Lincoln when she is not traveling throughout Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to meet with clients. In addition to being a NAIFA Member, Kris is also a member of NAHU (National Association of Health Underwrites) and is currently a Board Member on the Lincoln Association (LAHU).

Kris has two children, Skylar (11) and Jacob (16). Yes, he is now driving (mostly in Omaha); which is scary and exciting at the same time. In her spare time, Kris enjoys:

Spending time with family & friends

Exercise

Exploring new places to have dinner and a glass of wine

Traveling—she has been to Madrid, Spain; Sydney, Australia; and Rome, Italy

Did You Know? Workplace Voluntary Benefits are valuable, cost-effective benefits which provide employees with a financial safety net for unexpected health expenses or pre-mature death. Employers can choose to pay for the benefits or allow employees to payroll deduct the premium. For example:

Life Insurance (i.e. term, whole life, universal)

Health Insurance (i.e. accidental, disability, critical illness, hospital, indemnity)

Legislative Updates

Government-Wide Funding Issues Congress will spend most of September trying to resolve government-wide funding issues, with a catch-all spending bill expected prior to (or at) the deadline by which new government funding must be authorized (or the government will shut down). That deadline is September 30, the end of the government’s current fiscal year. Senior Safe Act Bill (H.R. 4538) On July 5, the House of Representatives approved the Senior Safe Act, H.R. 4538, a bill aimed at “protecting financial advisors from liability when they try to stop the financial exploitation of seniors.” The bill passed by voice vote. NAIFA worked closely with bill sponsors to craft rules that work for both seniors who are at risk for abuse and the financial advisors who work with them. The House-passed bill was patterned on a measure by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who says she hopes the measure can win Senate approval before this Congress adjourns later this year. NAIFA supports the bill. Background on the Employer Health Insurance Premiums Exclusion Congress is currently considering healthcare reform proposals that would eliminate or place a cap on the employer-tax exclusion for health insurance. NAHU is very concerned about these proposals as they would undermine the employer-sponsored health insurance system that provides coverage for more than 175 million Americans. Eliminating the exclusion would eliminate most of the advantages of employer-sponsored insurance, while capping it would degrade the benefit and serve as a tax increase for middle-class Americans.

ACTION NEEDED: NAHU opposes any efforts that would eliminate or cap the employer-tax exclusion for health insurance. While various pieces of legislation are currently pending in Congress that address the exclusion, NAHU is asking all members to urge their federal legislators to oppose any efforts that would eliminate or place a cap on the employer tax exclusion. Listening Sessions Offered by the Department of Insurance Many Nebraskans have questions about insurance and how it affects their family or business. In order to answer their questions, the Department of Insurance has scheduled listening sessions to update consumers on changes in the market and will have experts on hand to speak about the recent changes in the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. The listening sessions will consist of a brief discussion on the following topics:

The ACA and the Future

Health Insurance Options for individuals and small businesses

2017 Premiums

Property and Casualty Insurance There are 15 listening sessions throughout September and October in several locations across Nebraska; including Grand Island (9/29) and Hastings (9/29). See page 2 of the DOI Press Release for all available times and locations.
