Wear an approved bicycle safety helmet that is properly fitted.Check that tires have sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release wheel levers are closed. Carry repair and emergency supplies appropriate for your ride. Never ride with headphones. A rearview mirror can be a valuable safety benefit to bicyclists. Follow the law. Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. Obey the rules of the road as if you were driving a car—stop at stop signs, red lights, and signal before turning or changing lanes. Ride with traffic. Always ride on the right side of the road, unless: • overtaking another bicycle or vehicle; • preparing to make a legal left turn; • traveling the same speed of the current traffic; • traveling on a paved shoulder of a highway; • it is necessary to avoid unsafe conditions; • the lane is too narrow for both vehicle and bicycle to travel side by side. Be predictable. Avoid sudden movements. Make your intentions clear to motorists and other road users. Signal turns, and check behind before turning or changing lanes. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. See and be easily seen. Ride where drivers can see you. Wear brightly colored clothing. Use a front white light and red rear light and reflectors at night or when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t ride on sidewalks. Think ahead. Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians and other bicyclists will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for uneven terrain, debris, branches and potholes. Cross railroad tracks at right angles. Keep your cool. Road rage benefits no one and always makes a bad situation worse. Recommended items to take along: Cell phone, identi- fication card, medical card, first aid kit, bicycle tire repair kit and water. Trail Safety Tips • Ride within your ability. • Minimize your impact on the trail and other users. Keep right when riding; when passing another trail user, pass on the left and call out, “Passing on your left.” • Use marked and visible routes to avoid creating new trails. • Bicycles yield to horses, hikers and runners. Hikers and runners yield to horses. When in doubt, give the other user the right-of-way. • Be courteous and respect all users of the trail. • Minimize impact on the trail, pack out what you pack in! Nebraska Bike Law Summary In Nebraska, bicyclists are required to follow the same rules of the road as motorists. A bicyclist riding on a highway generally has all of the rights of a vehicle and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle (some exceptions do exist). Parents or guardians are responsible for the actions of children under the age of 16. Restricted Highways (Interstate & Freeway) Bicyclists are not allowed to ride on Interstate highways or freeways in Nebraska (a freeway is defined as a fully access controlled highway with “no” at grade crossings). Mandatory Side Path Law Bicyclists should not ride a bicycle on the highway if a usable bike path is adjacent. This does not apply when riding on surface (paved) shoulders. State Patrol Advice Although Nebraska has laws that require reflectors and a light on bicycles for riding at night, the Nebraska State Patrol does not recommend riding a bicycle on rural state highways at night due to the higher speeds and reduced visibility. Ride Single File When Riding on the Highway Bicyclists must ride single file when riding on the highway. This does not apply when riding on the surfaced shoulder. Bicyclists must signal their turn if they leave the shoulder to ride on the highway and yield the right-of-way to all other vehicles. For more details, see Nebraska Revised Statutes, portions of Chapter 60, Bicycle Related nebraskalegislature.gov/laws. Most of the bicycle regulations are in §60-6,314 to 60-6,319. Local authorities may have additional regulations within their jurisdictions. RIGHT/ALT STOP LEFT Use proper hand signals to let drivers and others know which way you will be moving. There are two ways to signal a right hand turn. See the diagram labeled Right/Alt for the second way used only by bicyclists. RIGHT Correct Fit Wrong Wrong Dave Heineman Governor Monty W.
