Bicycle Safety TipsRide ready. Wear an approved bicycle safety helmet that isproperly fitted.Check that tires have sufficient air, brakes areworking, chain runs smoothly, and quick release wheel leversare closed. Carry repair and emergency supplies appropriatefor your ride. Never ride with headphones. A rearview mirrorcan be a valuable safety benefit to bicyclists.
Follow the law. Bicyclists have the same rights and dutiesas drivers. Obey the rules of the road as if you were driving acar—stop at stop signs, red lights, and signal before turningor changing lanes. Ride with traffic. Always ride on the rightside of the road, unless:• overtaking another bicycle or vehicle;• preparing to make a legal left turn;• traveling the same speed of the current traffic;• traveling on a paved shoulder of a highway;• it is necessary to avoid unsafe conditions;• the lane is too narrow for both vehicle and bicycle
to travel side by side.
Be predictable. Avoid sudden movements. Make yourintentions clear to motorists and other road users. Signalturns, and check behind before turning or changing lanes.Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars.
See and be easily seen. Ride where drivers can see you.Wear brightly colored clothing. Use a front white light and redrear light and reflectors at night or when visibility is poor.Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t ride on sidewalks.
Think ahead. Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians and otherbicyclists will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and rideoutside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for uneventerrain, debris, branches and potholes. Cross railroad tracksat right angles.
Keep your cool. Road rage benefits no one and alwaysmakes a bad situation worse.
Recommended items to take along: Cell phone, identi -fication card, medical card, first aid kit, bicycle tire repair kitand water.
Trail Safety Tips• Ride within your ability.• Minimize your impact on the trail and other users. Keep
right when riding; when passing another trail user, pass onthe left and call out, “Passing on your left.”
• Use marked and visible routes to avoid creating new trails.• Bicycles yield to horses, hikers and runners. Hikers and
runners yield to horses. When in doubt, give the other userthe right-of-way.
• Be courteous and respect all users of the trail.• Minimize impact on the trail, pack out what you pack in!
Nebraska Bike Law SummaryIn Nebraska, bicyclists are required to follow the same rulesof the road as motorists. A bicyclist riding on a highwaygenerally has all of the rights of a vehicle and shall be subjectto all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle (someexceptions do exist). Parents or guardians are responsiblefor the actions of children under the age of 16.
Restricted Highways (Interstate & Freeway)Bicyclists are not allowed to ride on Interstate highways orfreeways in Nebraska (a freeway is defined as a fully accesscontrolled highway with “no” at grade crossings).
Mandatory Side Path LawBicyclists should not ride a bicycle on the highway if a usablebike path is adjacent. This does not apply when riding onsurface (paved) shoulders.
State Patrol AdviceAlthough Nebraska has laws that require reflectors and a lighton bicycles for riding at night, the Nebraska State Patrol doesnot recommend riding a bicycle on rural state highways atnight due to the higher speeds and reduced visibility.
Ride Single File When Riding on the HighwayBicyclists must ride single file when riding on the highway. This does not apply when riding on the surfaced shoulder.Bicyclists must signal their turn if they leave the shoulder toride on the highway and yield the right-of-way to all othervehicles.
For more details, see Nebraska Revised Statutes, portionsof Chapter 60, Bicycle Related nebraskalegislature.gov/laws.Most of the bicycle regulations are in §60-6,314 to 60-6,319.Local authorities may have additional regulations within theirjurisdictions.
