Applying Instructional design for the FE/SW courseFE Course development p1-15, SW Course development p2-8

Analysis The objective of the FE/SW course is to pass the FE/SW exam. The creation of a question bank representing the different areas of knowledge could be considered.

Design You need to examine what are the pre-requisites for the module youare developing. Example if the module contains the topic on subneting A pre-requisite would be the ability to perform hexadecimal and binary conversion and arithmetic

The learning objectives based on the knowledge areas to be covered is specified clearly. Decide on the flow of activities in the module Decide the tests to perform to evaluate understanding. Structure and sequence the program outline

Development phase The lesson plan is created and the types of learning activities and exercises are described. Aside from the actual instruction, a quiz can be added to test the application of the knowledge. A review of the key concepts would also be helpful.

Implementation phase A 2 way approach should be used. This means the learners should be allow to work on the problem amongst themselves and present their solutions. Sampling of the understanding during instruction can be done by asking questions to the class and selecting individuals to answer. Be careful not to pick only selected individuals. A short quiz can be done using representative morning questions for that topic. It is good to round up the topic by providing a summary of the key points.

Evaluation phase The evaluation is done using 1) feedback forms 2) Tests

Feedback The following areas is included in the feedback. 1)Length of course 2)Coverage 3)Depth of topics 4)Balance of time allocated for lecture and practice 5)Quality of presentation 6)Quality of Materials 7)Training environment 8)Level of understanding of the sub topics

7.Use of the Mock Exam

The use of the past exam questions allows us to determine the competency of the students.

It allows us to simulate the exam conditions for the examinee.

It allows the examinee to discover their areas of strength and weakness.

The questions in the past exams also allow the instructor discover patterns in the question setting and similar questions can be created to test the students.

7.2 Automated Marking of the Morning Exam

You can prepare a worksheet to count the correct entry for that question.

This worksheet is used to enter the formula to mark the submitted answer sheets.

The COUNTIF function in Excel can be used to determine if the correct option has been selected.

Example

The answer Excel file is Book1.xls and Sheet1 and the cell for entering the answer is given A4 with the correct answer as a.

The following can be used to mark the question.

=COUNTIF([Book1]Sheet1!$A$4,"=a")
