2020 FISHING FORECAST Jim Ramsay - Aquatic Biologist

Lamar Service Center

CATFISH (Channel & Blue)

Historically, catfish have been very successful at Nee Noshe. In fact, Nee Noshe held the state record for channel catfish for many years. Since the fishery was re-established in 2015, channel catfish have been stocked abundantly. Blue cats were added in 2019. Some very large channel cats inhabit Nee Noshe (over 25”). This indicates that some large catfish entered the lake with the irrigation water. This is a frequent occurrence when a lake first fills. In 2020, catfishing is expected to be fair. Anglers targeting channel catfish typically fish with bait (dough bait, cut shad, livers, etc.) on the bot-tom. Blue catfish typically prefer a live bait fished slightly higher in the water column. Artificial spawning containers have been used at Nee Noshe to promote natural reproduction. This work will continue in 2020.

CRAPPIE (Black & White)

Black crappie have been stocked abundantly at Nee Noshe since the lake refilled in 2015. Some nice crappies were caught at Nee Noshe in 2019. Fishing is expected to be good for crappies in 2020. Anglers target crappies by fishing near the numerous sub-merged trees and brushy areas. Small jigs or live minnow rigs are effective for crappies. Currently, black crappies are the only spe-cies available. White crappies will be stocked in 2020. Historical-ly, Nee Noshe has had some very nice white crappies. Fish over 15” were common. These fish should grow quickly and add some excitement and variety to the crappie population.

WALLEYE/SAUGEYE

These fish have been aggressively stocked in an effort to rebuild the walleye/saugeye fishery as quickly as possible. Good num-bers of nice fish (up to 20”) will be available to anglers in 2020. Anglers can keep up to 10 of these fish regardless of size. Fishing is expected to be good to excellent for WAL/SAG in 2020. Anglers typically use jigs, live bait rigs, or shad-imitating crank baits to catch these fish. Due to the large amount of submerged structure, many anglers choose jigs, or other inexpensive tackle.

WHITE BASS / WIPER

Wipers are likely the most abundant game fish species in the lake. Populations are thriving and stocking success appears to be high. The 17”- 19” year class is especially strong. Additionally, adult white bass have been stocked from nearby John Martin Res. These fish can be caught on a variety of offerings including: live bait rigs, spinners, jigs, small jerk baits, and any crank bait resem-bling a gizzard shad. Fishing is expected to be very good to excel-lent in 2020.
