Dear Friends Since April-2003, with your patronage NICE has indeed come a long way. As planned NICE started operating the free residential school from 15-August 2003. The school now houses 15 students, 01 teacher, 01 cook and 01 Administrative assistant. During enrollment into 06th standard, we noticed that the students lacked even the knowledge of a 02nd standard student and we had to start training them from 02nd standard CBSE syllabi. The children have shown good progress and we hope to finish the 06th standard syllabi by end of June-2004. NICE has been providing three square meals every day to the students and staff. During the initial period students faced minor health problems after which we initiated a thorough health checkup by Dr. Ch Aravind Babu, an eminent physician in Narasaraopet, who renders free service to us now. Upon his advice we started boiling water before consumption after which health during the last quarter improved considerably with almost no complaints. The students play the games Football, Volleyball & Cricket regularly and practice Yoga everyday. For the following year NICE will enroll 05 students for the 07th standard and 25 students for the 06th standard, taking the strength of the school to around 45 students. NICE received almost twice the donations it received the before year! This year (2003-04), we received Rs. 4,23,667.00 from 251 donors. In 2002-03 we had received Rs. 2,37,856.00 from 152 donors. The most important milestones last year were that our school was evaluated and approved by credible funding institutions like CSIM and ASHA. CSIM started donating Dal, Oil & Sugar every month since November-03. ASHA’s volunteers from Berkeley (USA) have collected US$ 5000, which we are likely to receive by the second week of April-04. We now have the patronage and blessings of Shri. Devarajan (Founder of CSIM) and Shri Sandeep Pandey (Magsasay Awardee & founder of Asha). Various other companies like Natco Pharma Ltd, Bibo Water have contributed to our growth. Construction for an additional RCC building of around 600 sqft for classrooms and 300 sqft of asbestos roofing shed for dining, commenced on Feb 16th 2004. The bhoomi puja for this new block was performed by Mr PK Madhav, Principal Partner, Byrraju Foundation. The construction is expected to complete by end of May-04. On August 15, Jasti Ranga Rao (Founder of Assist, an NGO from Chilakaluripeta) innagurated the new school building. Other guests of honor were Ravula Venkateswara Rao (Adarsa Rythu Awardee), Mr. P Appa Rao and Dr. Kandimalla Sambasiva Rao. On January 26, Republic Day celebration. Mr Giri Kolanupaka from Asha was the guest of honor.

On Feb 16, NICE Shri PK Madhav (Head of Byrraju Foundation) performed bhoomi puja for the new block, Shri P Jayaprasad Raja (President Kanaparthi Panchayat), Shri N. Srinivasa Rao (President, Endugumpalem Panchayat), Shri Yelamanchili Suresh, Shri N Sitaramiah and Shri Gogineni Mohan Rao were the guests of honor

Key challenges for this year (2004-05) include

Donors during 2003-04 Our special thanks to Shri. PN Devarajan Founder of Manava Seva Dharma Samvardhani, Chennai and Centre for Social Initiative & Management (CSIM), Ex Director of RBI, Director-Reliance Industries and, Director-Dr Reddys Laboratories Ltd. Mr Devarajan is a very dynamic and relentless social worker with a singular mission to solve the miseries of the poor and needy. His advise, direction and deeds have impacted numerous NGOs in India. His motivation during the past one-year has greatly helped our team in developing NICE. Under his guidance, CSIM presently donates Dal, Oil and Sugar to our school inmates every month. Apart from this he has been promoting NICE with many corporates. Shri. Sandeep Pandey Magsasay Awardee and founder of ‘Asha for Education’ Asha is an USA based NGO working at tying Indians in the USA with Indian based NGOs with 66 chapters across the world. Asha has supported 385 projects across 22 indian states with over US $ 4 million in contributions since 1991. In 2002 Asha supported 200 projects totaling US $1 million. Shri Pandey is a relentless social worker and is a part of the NAPM and has impacted the ‘Narmada Bachao’ initiative in a great manner. Under his guidance and relentless work by the Asha-Hyderabad chapter team members, Asha Berkeley chapter has raised US $ 5000 for NICE. The funds are expected to reach us/India in the near future. A special thanks to efforts put in by Asha-Hyderabad team members Mr. K Prasanna Kumar, Mr Hemchandra, Mr. K Giridhar, Mr Udayashankar and Mr. Ramakrishna Raju.
