The ‘Backyard Booklet’ was a response to a brief that involved creating a booklet for an exhibition about an Australian icon. This exhibition focuses on the nostalgia of childhood, growing up in and around the Melbourne suburbs. To avoid pigeonholing any particular experience of the audience, I made sure that there was a varied spectrum of different yards, hoping to grab each viewer’s attention at a different period in the booklet. Some of the backyards are in the lower socio-economic range, and they extend all the way up the higher end of the scale. In order to keep the booklet interesting, I found it necessary to deliver a very photographic aesthetic. This aesthetic features a minimal palette, using duotones and monochromes for most of the photographs. The booklet was perfect bound, on a matte stock, with the price-tag of just under ten dollars kept in mind during the printing process. This ensured quality, yet succint and realistic costs during production.

MOMOSTATIONARY

The Museum of Modern Oddities stationary brief consisted of an unusual approach to a simple problem. The stationary was produced in such a way to reflect the ‘Nepenthes’ exhibition being shown, an exhibition taking inspiration from observation of carnivorous plants. This meant for me to look straight to nature, gardening and landscaping. My solution was rustic and organic. The logotype was produced in form of a lino-cut, and this was branded across every page and envelope. The business cards are double sided, and vary from a series of five. Each colour depicts a different position, or faculty in the museum, and thus each person is coded accordingly. The cards also double as a plant tag, and can be placed into soil with their pointed tip, into a desk pot plant, increasing the visibility of the card, and adding functionality. The stationary set all folds into the original square shape and size of the envelope, so any posters and letterheads follow this structure. The business card series, letter head, promotional poster, advertising flyer and containing envelopes were produced.

Adding on from the booklet design, the poster continues on to advertise the exhibition. The poster is A2 in length, but folds down into three sections, leaving a squared off A4 as the final result. This front side showcases one of the very flora orientated gardens in the booklet.

This secondary side contains all the applicable information for the exhibition, featuring the beach backyard, with very Australian features.

‘Samba Vexographica’ is a short film set to the soundtrack of Devendra Barnhart, and remixes of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Pogo. It travels through a journey of landscapes from mountains to patterned aerial panoramas. The subtitles are themed around a foreign film feel, and narrate the sounds in a derived karaoke fashion. The motion was created in AfterEffects, and uses multiple compositions to create a dreamy, trance-esque moving image.

NEPENTHESINSTALLATION

Choosing found objects, to keep a realistic and clean look, I have been able to produce my entrance to this exhibition. The glass dome works to create a ‘spectacle’ bubble for the viewers, whilst reflects back to a scientific theme. This also works to add a ‘caged in’ and dangerous effect, which is the idea of the exhibitions entirety. The glass should not take away from the main event, the plants. It is something the observers can walk past and see grow and change every day. The installations full title is “Caged Nepenthes in Glass”.

AHA! WEB

DESIGNAustralian Home Away is a short stays accommodation company, specializing in self contained, furnished rentals to

Victoria. As part of working together with the company, I implimented a website that completely revolutionized the way

they looked at the internet. Branding was changed, and now the company matches

from website to letterhead.

Next PageRe-design for the book cover of the classic

novel ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. The type image was created using pieces

of beef and pork, cut using a scalpel.
