Principal’s Report
Child Safety
Child safety is a matter that we
take very seriously.
As part of our build up to our
school review we are updating our
policies and at this week’s School
Council meeting we ratified our
Child Safety Commitment Statement, Child Safety Reporting
Obligations Policy and Procedures and our Child Safety Policy.
My plan is to include information about child safety in every
newsletter because it needs to be front and centre in our
thinking. This week I am including our Child Safety Statement
of Commitment for your perusal.
Child Safety Statement of Commitment
Rationale
Neerim District Secondary College is committed to safety and
wellbeing of all children and this will be the primary focus for
our care and decision making.
Neerim District Secondary College has zero tolerance for child
abuse.
Neerim District Secondary College is committed to providing
a child safe environment where children and young people
are safe and feel safe, and their voices are heard about
decisions that affect their lives. Particular attention will be
paid to the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander children and children from culturally and/or
linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with a disability as
well as the safety of vulnerable children.
Every person involved in Neerim District Secondary College
has a responsibility to understand the important and specific
role he/she plays individually and collectively to ensure that
the wellbeing and safety of all children and young people is at
the forefront of all they do and every decision they make.
Implementation
In its planning decision-making and operations, Neerim
District Secondary College will:
Take a preventative, proactive and participatory
approach to child safety;
Value and empower children to participate in
decisions which affect their lives;
Foster a culture of openness that supports all
persons to safely disclose risks of harm to children
Respect diversity in cultures and child rearing
practices while keeping child safety paramount
Provide written guidance on appropriate conduct
and behaviour towards children
Engage only the most suitable people to work with
children and have high quality staff and volunteer
supervision and professional development
Ensure children know who to talk with if they are
worried or are feeling unsafe, and that they are
comfortable and encouraged to raise such issues
Report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment
promptly to the appropriate authorities
Share information appropriately and lawfully with
other organisations where the safety and wellbeing
of children is at risk and
Value the input of and communicate regularly with
families and carers.
School Council Vacancies
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, we still have two
parent category vacancies on our School Council. Should you
wish to be part of this group that is instrumental in
developing policy and setting the strategic direction of
Neerim District Secondary College, then please contact me at
the school on 5628 1455.

Lost Property
We have a tub of unnamed and unclaimed school
uniform at the office from Term 1. If your child has lost
an item of clothing at school please send them to the
office to check whether we have it, any items unclaimed
by the end of next week Friday 17 May, will be given to
needy students.
We request that parents write their child’s name on their school uniform so that we can
hand it back to them when it comes to the office, 99% of uniform handed in at the office

Neerim District Secondary College represented the
Gippsland region in the Junior (16 and under) section of
secondary schools in the state lawn bowls finals on
Wednesday 1st May.
The competition was two bowl triples (3 players per team)
where each player gets to bowl two bowls while alternating
with their opposition counterpart. Each game was 7 ends or
40 minutes duration.
Representing Neerim were Claire Pollard (skip), Chelsea
Lineham 2nd and Macca Duck Lead. Although the team had
some training at Neerim District Bowling club, they had
never played an actual game.
In the group that Neerim competed in, there were 3 other
schools that were played against.
In the first game, the opponent was Kyabram. Neerim got off
to a good start and won the first 3 ends but Kyabram then
won the next 2 ends. Neerim won the last end and despite
winning 4 of the 6 ends played, they lost 6 shots to 8.
Junior Bowls State Finals 2019
In the second game, Neerim played against Glen Eira College.
This was a very close game with scores level with one end to
go. Glen Eira won the end after a measure was needed to
determine which was the shot bowl. Neerim lost 4 shots to 5.
In the third and last game, Neerim played against Ruther-
glen. In another very close game Neerim only trailed by 1
shot with 1 end to play. Rutherglen won the end and won
the game 8 shots to Neerim 4.
Although Neerim did not win a game, the team performed
very well with each player putting down some excellent
bowls at various times of the games.
