Red Cross Responds to Recent Flooding

Has anyone noƟced it’s been raining an awful lot in northeast Georgia

this summer? All the rain contributed to the recent flooding in many

areas, including Forsyth, Gilmer and Pickens counƟes where

approximately 60 homes were flooded, and many roads were washed

out. Northeast Georgia Chapter volunteers along with volunteers

from other Georgia Chapters responded to the calls for help, opening

shelters in Gilmer county, and providing assistance to families in

Forsyth, Gilmer and Pickens counƟes. With so many volunteers

responding we can’t name each one, but we extend our sincerest

graƟtude to each and every one.

Shelter Trailer Roundup….

Northeast Georgia Chapter Disaster Volunteers helped out

on Saturday, August 17 at the Chapter Office in Gainesville

to re-stock shelter trailers and get them back on the road,

ready for whatever disaster may come our way.

Volunteers also tackled the Disaster OperaƟons Center

and storage area inventorying and reorganizing supplies,

accomplishing about 40% of what needed to be done. It was a great way to meet other

volunteers and share concerns, and exchange ideas. Another Roundup will be scheduled in

the near future. Our thanks go out to the all the volunteers who came out to help.

Join the fun at our next Roundup—informaƟon will be posted on

Volunteer ConnecƟon.

Make a Plan—Know What to do in Case

of Emergency.

Make sure that the enƟre family is prepared

and informed in the event of a disaster or

emergency. You may not always be together

when these events take place.

Meet with your families:

• Discuss how to prepare and respond to

emergencies that are most likely to

happen where you live, learn, work or

play.

• IdenƟfy responsibiliƟes for each membe

of your household.

• Choose two places to meet, one right

outside your home, one outside your

neighborhood.

• Choose and out-of-area emergency

contact person.

• Plan what to do if you have to evacuate.

Plan were to go, and which route to take

• PracƟce evacuaƟng your house twice ayear.

• Plan ahead for pets.

Build A Kit—be prepared.

Being prepared means being equippedwith the proper supplies you may need in the

event of an emergency or disaster.

Keep your supplies in an easy to carry kit that

you can take with you in case you have to

evacuate.

• At a minimum you should have the basic

supplies: water, non-perishable food,

flashlight with baƩeries, a baƩery

operated radio, extra baƩeries, first aid

kit, medicaƟons, sanitaƟon and persona

hygiene items, a mulƟ-purpose tool, cell

phone charges, extract cash, family and

emergency contact informaƟon.

• Consider needs of all family members.

• AddiƟonal supplies needed for disasters

common to your area.

Be Informed - Learn the types of

disasters or emergencies that may occur

in your area, which can range from home

fires or medical emergencies affecƟng

only you or your family, or earthquakesor floods that affect a whole community

• Know how local authoriƟes will noƟf

you during a disaster and how you

will get informaƟon, whether throug

local radio, TV or NOAA Weather

staƟons or channels.

September is NaƟonal Preparedness Month

It’s NaƟonal Preparedness Month and the American Red Cross is urging families

across the country to come up with a game plan to make sure they are ready for the

next emergency or disaster. Disasters can strike suddenly, at any Ɵme and anywhere.

In an emergency, every second counts , that is why it is important to have a plan.

There are three acƟons everyone can take that can make a difference—

Make a Plan - Build a Kit - Be InformedIs your family Red Cross Ready —

• Do you know what emergencies or disasters are most likely to occur in your com-

munity?

• Do you have a family disaster plan, and have you pracƟced it?

• Do you have an emergency preparedness kit?

• Is at least one member of your household trained in first aid and CPR/AED?

• Have you taken acƟon to help your community prepare?

The American Red Cross has a variety of resources and programs to help people be

prepared.

• Be Red Cross Ready is a web-based interacƟve training program that teaches peo-

ple how to be ready for emergencies• First-Aid and CPR/AED training helps people learn how to respond to emergencies

in case advanced medical help is delayed

• Ready RaƟng helps businesses, schools, and other organizaƟons beƩer prepare

for emergencies.

• Ready When the Time Comes trains employees from corporaƟons and mobilizes

them as a community-based volunteer when disaster strikes.

• First Aid Emergency Drills help businesses train their staff for emergencies and

disasters.

 A BeauƟful Day for a Golf Tournament…..

The 9th Annual Don Gordon Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Monday, August 26th 2013 at

the Polo Golf and Country Club in Cumming. The rain let up, the sun was out, and the breeze was

pleasantly cool as 64 players enjoyed a day of golf, while supporƟng the fundraising efforts of our

Board of Directors and volunteers. All funds raised will help the Northeast Georgia Chapter support

the mission of the American Red Cross, whether it is responding to disasters, collecƟng lifesaving

blood, teaching skills that can save a life, or assisƟng our military members and their families. Making

the day a success would not have been possible without the support and generosity of local

businesses and individuals who sponsored the tournament, and donated prizes and aucƟon items.

Our sincerest thanks go out to all those that played, sponsored and contributed.

The Red Cross Business Council Update:

The Northeast Georgia Chapter is pleased to welcome our three inaugural members to the Red Cross Business Council. We would like to thank

ServPro of Gainesville, PCL Industrial ConstrucƟon and ScienƟfic Games in AlphareƩa for their strong support in partnering with the Northeast

Georgia Chapter as we introduce this new opportunity to local businesses.

The Red Cross Business Council seeks to engage businesses with their local chapter through educaƟon and broader awareness of the Red Cross

mission and services. Members will have the opportunity to make a stronger impact on the lives of others in need through the Red Cross “Four

Pillars of Partnership.” Businesses can become a member in Forsyth or Hall CounƟes by supporƟng the Red Cross with a tax-deducƟble contribu-

Ɵon at one of five membership levels. AddiƟonally, businesses will be invited to host or aƩend a quarterly lunch meeƟng to network, share ideas

and promote their businesses to other members. For addiƟonal informaƟon on Business Council membership requirements and company bene-

fits, please contact Daniel Holden, Development Officer at 404-693-2304 or via email at [email protected].
