St. Mark Lutheran Preschool offers a combination of all these elements, providing a loving environment where students can grow in separate classes for three and four year old children. Outside doors in the classrooms are heavy, so children cannot push them open. An inside playground and gym make the building self-sufficient. Twin Cities Community Outreach (TCCO) is a “three in one “ organization. TCCO serves both the City of North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda.
Friends of TCCO pronounce its acronym as “taco”.
Founded in 1984 TCCO brought together the North Tonawanda Interchurch Food Pantry, NT Clothes Closet, and North Tonawanda Meals on Wheels in one place.
The TCCO building at 100 Ridge Road, North Tonawanda is owned by the non-profi t agency. The maintenance and utilities for the groups are paid by
TCCO. Without TCCO, the three agencies would not be able to operate.
In 1991, the former Twin Cities Ice Rink building at 100 Ridge Road, North Tonawanda became available. After a year of hard work, the building was cleaned and renovated enough to be habitable for the three agencies. Because only part of the 63,000 square foot building was used by the three agencies, the unused half has since been turned into a bus garage and repair shop for the North Tonawanda city schools. With the School District’s help, other renovations were accomplished to further complete the new facilities. Offi ces, work and storage areas, restrooms and various other necessary repairs made the facilities comfortable, warm and clean.
Funding for TCCO comes from both communities. Support comes from individual donations, business gifts, help from corporations, churches, clubs, civic groups, and other organizations which provide fi nancial assistance.
TCCO will be holding their fourth annual “Basket Bonanza” on Sunday, October 7 at Sikora Post American Legion Hall, 950 Payne Avenue, in North Tonawanda. Sale of tickets and previewing of the baskets will be from noon to 3:00 pm. Drawings begin
at 3:00 PM. You need not be present to win Proceeds from this theme tray auction will benefi t TCCO and its three agencies. Christianity is unique among religions, for it alone offers a personal relationship with the Creator beginning here and now, and lasting throughout eternity. Jesus declared, “This is eternal life – that they may know God” ( Jn. 17:2). Unfortunately, many in the Church miss the great blessing of fellowship with our Lord because we have lost the ability to recognize His voice within us. Though we have the promise that “My sheep hear My voice,” too many believers are starved for that intimate relationship that alone can satisfy the desire of their hearts.
I was one of those sheep who was deaf to his Shepherd until the Lord revealed four very simple keys (found in Habakkuk 2:1, 2) that unlocked the treasure of His voice.
Key #1 – God’s voice in your heart often sounds like a flow of spontaneous thoughts.
Habakkuk knew the sound of God speaking to him (Hab. 2:2). Elijah described it as a still, small voice (I Kings 19:12). I had always listened for an inner audible voice, and God does speak that way at times. However, I have found that usually, God’s voice comes as spontaneous thoughts, visions, feelings, or impressions.
For example, haven’t you been driving down the road and had a thought come to you to pray for a certain person? Didn’t you believe it was God telling you to pray? What did God’s voice sound like? Was it an audible voice, or was it a spontaneous thought that lit upon your mind?
Experience indicates that we perceive spirit-level communication as spontaneous thoughts, impressions and visions, and Scripture confirms this in many ways. For example, one definition of paga, a Hebrew word for intercession, is “a chance encounter or an accidental intersecting.” When
God lays people on our hearts, He does it through paga, a chance-encounter thought “accidentally” intersecting our minds.
Therefore, when you want to hear from God, tune to chance-encounter or spontaneous thoughts.
Key #2 – Become still so you can sense God’s flow of thoughts and emotions within.
Habakkuk said, “I will stand on my guard post...” (Hab. 2:1). Habakkuk knew that to hear God’s quiet, inner, spontaneous thoughts, he had to first go to a quiet place and still his own thoughts and emotions. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to be still, and know that He is God. There is a deep inner knowing (spontaneous flow) in our spirits that each of us can experience when we quiet our flesh and our minds. If we are not still, we will sense only our own thoughts.
Loving God through a quiet worship song is one very effective way to become still. (Note II Kings 3:15.) After I worship and become silent within, I open myself for that spontaneous flow. If thoughts come of things I have forgotten to do, I write them down and dismiss them. If thoughts of guilt or unworthiness come, I repent thoroughly, receive the washing of the blood of the Lamb, putting on His robe of righteousness, seeing myself spotless before God (Is. 61:10; Col. 1:22).
To receive the pure word of God, it is very important that my heart be properly focused as I become still because my focus is the source of the intuitive flow. If I fix my eyes upon Jesus, the intuitive flow comes from Jesus. But if I fix my gaze upon some desire of my heart, the intuitive flow comes out of that desire. To have a pure flow I must become still and carefully fix my eyes upon Jesus. Again, quietly worshiping the King, and receiving out of the stillness that follows quite easily accomplishes this.
Fix your gaze upon Jesus (Heb. 12:2), becoming quiet in His presence and sharing with Him what is on your heart. Spontaneous thoughts will begin to flow from the throne of God to you, and you will actually be conversing with the King of Kings!
Key #3 – As you pray, fix the eyes of your heart upon Jesus, seeing in the Spirit the dreams and visions of Almighty God.
Habakkuk said, “I will keep watch to see,” and God said, “Record the vision” (Hab. 2:1,2). Habakkuk was actually looking for vision as he prayed. He opened the eyes of his heart, and looked into the spirit world to see what God wanted to show him. This is an intriguing idea.
God has always spoken through dreams and visions, and He specifically said that they would come to those upon whom the Holy Spirit is poured out (Acts 2:1-4, 17).
I had never thought of opening the eyes of my heart and looking for vision. However, I have come to believe that this is exactly what God wants me to do. He gave me eyes in my heart to see in the spirit the vision and movement of Almighty God. There is an active spirit world all around us, full of angels, demons, the Holy Spirit, the omnipresent Father, and His omnipresent Son, Jesus. The only reasons for me not to see this reality are unbelief or lack of knowledge.
In order to see, we must look. Daniel saw a vision in his mind and said, “I was looking...I kept looking...I kept looking” (Dan. 7:2,9,13). As I pray, I look for Jesus, and I watch as He speaks to me, doing and saying the things that are on His heart. Many Christians will find that if they will only look, they will see, in the same way they receive spontaneous thoughts. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us (Matt. 1:23). It is as simple as that.
You can see Christ present with you because Christ is present with you. In fact, the vision may come so easily that you will be tempted to reject it, thinking that it is just you. But if you persist in recording these visions, your doubt will soon be overcome by faith as you recognize that the content of them could only be birthed in Almighty God.
Jesus demonstrated the ability of living out of constant contact with God, declaring that He did nothing on His own initiative, but only what He saw the Father doing, and heard the Father saying ( Jn. 5:19,20,30). What an incredible way to live!
Is it possible for you to live out of divine initiative as Jesus did? Yes! Fix your eyes upon Jesus. The veil has been torn, giving access into the immediate presence of God, and He calls you to draw near (Lk. 23:45; Heb. l0: 19-22). “I pray that the eyes of your heart will be enlightened….”
Key #4 – Journaling, the writing out of your prayers and God’s answers, brings great freedom in hearing God’s voice.
God told Habakkuk to record the vision (Hab. 2:2). This was not an isolated command. The Scriptures record many examples of individual’s prayers and God’s replies (e.g. the Psalms, many of the prophets, Revelation).
I call the process “two-way journaling,” and I have found it to be a fabulous catalyst for clearly discerning God’s inner, spontaneous flow, because as I journal I am able to write in faith for long periods of time, simply believing it is God. I know that what I believe I have received from God must be tested. However, testing involves doubt and doubt blocks divine communication, so I do not want to test while I am trying to receive. With journaling, I can receive in faith, knowing that when the flow has ended I can test and examine it carefully, making
sure that it lines up with Scripture.
You will be amazed when you journal. Doubt may hinder you at first, but throw it off, reminding yourself that it is a biblical concept, and that God is present, speaking to His children. Relax. When we cease our labors and enter His rest, God is free to flow (Heb. 4:10). Sit back comfortably, take out your pen and paper, smile, and turn your attention toward the Lord in praise and worship, seeking His face. After you write your question to Him, become still, fixing your gaze on Jesus. You will suddenly have a very
good thought. Don’t doubt it; simply write it down. Later, as you read your journaling, you, too, will be blessed to discover that you are indeed dialoguing
with God.Some final notes: Knowing
God through the Bible is a vital foundation to hearing His voice in your heart, so you must have a solid commitment to knowing and obeying the Scriptures. It is also very important for your growth and safety that you be related to solid, spiritual counselors. All major directional moves that come through journaling should be confirmed by your counselors before you act upon them.

You’ve heard of the winter blues, but do you know about the summer reds?Two very severe heat waves are upon us, so staying cool is a major concern for a lot of people. An estimated 113 million Americans will be trying to cope with excessive heat and humidity. Millions more have already been suffering from what Arizona medical hypnotist Sue W. Hull calls the summer reds, a term to describe the opposite of the winter blues, which are brought on by cold and sunlight defi ciencies. The term summer reds describes the annual depressive feelings generated by toxic levels of sunlight, and the stress caused by the relentless dust and oppressive, dry heat many Americans experience for as many as 6 months of the year.
The following tips have been gleaned from government websites for staying cool and beating the heat, but fi rst, a rule that ought to be a law: Never, ever leave children or pets in a parked
car; don’t even think about it! Now, here are the tips:
1. Stay out of the sun. If you must go out, early mornings, evenings and late nights are best.2. Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water. 3. Dress cool. Wear light colored, lightweight and loose fi tting clothing.4. Use the a/c. Turn on the air conditioner and stay inside.5. Keep fresh. Cool showers and baths can be helpful.6. Keep in touch. Stay in touch withelderly family members, neighbors and friends.7. Be attentive. Keep an eye out for any signs of heat related symptoms in children and the elderly because the elderly and young children are at the greater risk for developing heat related health problems.

Born in Antigo, WI of parents Edwin and Eva Hoffman on June 25, 1952. Graduated from Antigo High School. Grew up on a combination dairy farm and mink ranch. Received a Bachelor of Business Admin-istration degree (1974) in Agri-cultural Business from the Uni-versity of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. Married to wife Terry for 33 years, also a Lutheran. One daughter, Molly, age 27, mar-ried to Carl Miller on June 5, 2010. Employed as an auditor with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Dairy Market-ing for 33 years. Worked in Wausau, WI and Indianapolis, IN. Retired in 2008. Life long LCMS member, with experi-ence in many church offi ces and roles. Received LCMS certifi cation as a Lay Minister in December 2004. Participated in sports in school and enjoy hunting and fi shing. Hobbies include singing, digital pho-tography, woodworking and home repair. Followed long time sense of calling into the
Holy Ministry, beginning June 2009. Accepted into Alternate Route at Concordia Theologi-cal Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN. Lived in dormitory housing, while also residing on north side of Indianapolis in Nobles-ville, IN. Seminarian Field Worker for two years at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, Nobles-ville, IN (also home congrega-tion). Moved to Lockport, NY – July 2011 and served a one year vicarage at St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church. Graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary – June 2012, certifi ed and called to St. Peter Lockport (also vicarage congregation). Ordained at Christ Noblesville on June 24, 2012 by Rev. Adri-an Piazza. Installed as Pastor of St. Peter Lockport on July 29, 2012 by Rev. Dr. Chris Wicher, President of Eastern District – LCMS. The famous story of the Good Samaritan is found among Jesus’ teachings (Luke 10). The emphasis is on being a good neighbor, doing good for others as a way of doing good for yourself.Our Samaritan Counseling Center has been in Western New York for over 50 years seeking to fulfill that teaching by word and example. We consider it our aim to help others as we are able.
In the Biblical story, a man is beaten up, robbed and left for dead along a roadway. Two religious people come by, look and then keep going rather than get involved. However, a third person, a man of a different breed whose natural bias would be to avoid this dying stranger as well happens by. In the story, he stops, and cleans up the man’s wounds the best he can and loads him upon his beast of burden toting him to the nearest inn. There he bargains with the innkeeper for the wounded man to stay under his care, paying him well for his troubles. Being known as a regular customer, the innkeeper agree and trusts that if the man requires more care than he can provide or runs up a bigger bill that anticipated, the Samaritan will reimburse him when he comes back.
The story’s punchline is that these two were strangers, even enemies, but the Samaritan recognized that this was also
a human being made by God to populate His world who needed help just at the time he was able to give it andso he did . Our work at the center is most like that of the innkeeper. We are a place where people come or are brought for help as the need arises. Medical help is referred to the medical profession. Spiritual and emotional help is provided by our highly-trained counselors, spiritual mentors, Stephen ministers, educators and pastors. There is no trauma or pain known to human beings that has not been addressed at the Samaritan Center. While our administrative office is currently in North Tonawanda, satellite offices operate in cites from Lockport, to Buffalo, to the suburbs, to Springville and Arcade. Our newest office just opened in Angola. The offices are usually in church buildings where the congregations have dedicated a space for our staff to work with others. These congregations see the Samaritan work as a part of their ministry to others in the community.
Naturally, the issue of cost arises. How do we pay staff and utilities and rent and travel for our staff? We need to pay for professional consultation, insurance and services. For this we need to charge a fee. However, the real spirit of Samaritan comes into play when others come to the rescue as in the biblical story. When other individuals, congregations, groups, and
charities contribute to our work, we are able to offer services at a reduced fee. We have foundation grants to work with children under 18, for abused spouses, and those with little or no financial ability to pay a fee--just like in the story! Occasionally our Board of Directors also sponsors a charity fund-raiser.

Ephesus (Acts 19) around 55 A.D. He may have written several letters from Ephesus to other Christian communities. Tradition says he wrote a letter to the Ephesians from Rome in about 62 A.D.
Ephesus was a major port city on the coast of Asia Minor (present day Turkey) across the Aegean Sea from Athens. It was a crossroads of cultures and perhaps the fi rst city in the world to have public street lights. It is now six miles inland do to the silting of the Cayster River which fl owed into its harbor. Throughout most of its history Ephesus had strong connections to ancient Greece. Like all major Greek cities, Ephesus had a theater, seating 25,000. Gymnasia were another favorite Greek istitution. The gymnasia were not strictly for sports, though athletics were an important part, they also existed for the education of male youth in literature, philosophy, morals, debating and perhaps science and medicine. Thus it was a source of well trained military and political leaders. Nearby there would have been a library and a stadium. The city also had fountains, public baths and toilets. It was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire, about 225,000 inhabitants and the gateway to the East thanks to a road
built by the Persians centuries before. One of the Seven Wonders of the
Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis was at Ephesus, built about 300 years before Paul’s visit. The goddess Artemis of Ephesus was a goddess of fertility and was often pictured as draped with eggs or multiple breasts, symbols of fertility, from her waist to her shoulders. The Greek Artemis was the goddess of the hunt. Romans tended to recognize Artemis as Diana.
A wide marble street led to the harbor. Sailors and tourists could easily fi nd the major brothels and markets. If it was for sale, it was sold in one of Ephesus’ markets or shops, Ephesus led the 1st century world in the buying and selling of men, women and children. Everything that was traded between Asia and the Mediterranean world passed thru Ephesus. Statues of the goddess Diana/Artemis and other gods were available in woods and metals. Ephesus was a tolerant city when it came to women’s rights and the free exercise of religion. Most religions were represented.
The main market was rebuilt and modernized over a period of years during the reign of Augustus. It was surrounded by a two story covered walk way (stoa) around it. Its marble fl oor was 120 yards square. One of the
entrances was named after Augustus’ wife, Livia. They were proud of their city; coins excavated from the site are struck with the titles “First and Greatest Metropolis in Asia” and “First of All the Great Ones.” Hundreds of fertility god artifacts have been located in these areas. These miniature replicas of the gods were said to charm away evil spirits and provide protection to its devotee owners. Idols of this nature brought great profi t to Ephesian artisans. Among other artifacts that archaeology has uncovered are evidence of the importance of magic, mysticism, and incantations.
History and archaeology provide no clue to the lecture hall of Tyrannus mentioned in Acts One ancient Biblical manuscript, Codex Beza, adds that this was from fi fth to the tenth hour (11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) Sometimes things are just lost to history, like the 12,000 scrolls in the Library of Celsus in Ephesus , third largest in the ancient world, that burned in 262AD.
One of the world’s most famous ancient philosophies: that of Heraclitus of Ephesus (c. 535–460 B.C.). To Heraclitus, the world was characterized by constant fl ux; it consisted of opposites, such as good and bad, hot and cold, war and peace, which were in perpetual struggle against one another—a struggle
reconciled only by the logic of the inner rhythms of the universe, which Heraclitus called the Logos. He is quoted as saying “You cannot step twice into the same river,” Heraclitus wrote, “for fresh waters are ever fl owing in upon you.”
Local tourism offi cials claim Mary (Jesus’ mother), the Disciple John and the Apostle Luke are buried in or near Ephesus.
