Page 2: Neighborhood House Annual Report 2017 · 2019-09-13 · Dear Neighborhood House Community, We are so grateful for your continued support of our children, senior adults and families.

Our Mission: to provide individuals with opportunities to enhance the quality of their lives.

Our Vision: to break the cycle of poverty for our children and families!

How: by meeting critical Life Needs, teaching vital Life Skills and inspiring transforming Life Dreams!

Dear Neighborhood House Community,

We are so grateful for your continued support of our children, senior adults and families. Because of the support of so many volunteers, donors and partners, we are able to meet immediate needs as well as make a long-term, life-changing impact for the individuals and families we serve.

It has been a year of celebrating our preschoolers as they entered kindergarten ready to succeed! We have celebrated with parents and grandparents who prioritized time to participate in our services and attend programs with their children, strengthening their families and our communities. We cheer on our graduates who are succeeding in college!

This could not happen without the support of our entire community. Thank you for believing in the residents of Portland and the surrounding neighborhoods we serve and for choosing to be a part of our mission.

Sincerely,

Kevin Fuqua2017 PresidentBoard of Directors

2017 Program Highlights

Our Child Development Center, a partner in Metro United Way’s elite Excellence Academy, served 116 children. We are making a vital impact on the first five years of a child’s life!

88% of our children met their critical developmental milestones, helping ensure they are ready for continued success.

100% of our 11 preschool graduates completed our program ready to succeed in kindergarten.

The Youth Development Program served 410 children and teens in 2017.

Quality programs for youth outside of school time are critical tools in helping youth improve their school performance, reduce risky behaviors and graduate on time by contributing to key performance indicators including attendance, participation in learning, test scores and grades.

93% of youth who completed our Dreamers’ Academy literacy program maintained or improved their reading scores.

92% of youth in Saturday Academy improved or maintained their reading and math skills.

One of our youth graduates completed her degree at the University of Louisville. Two are in their 2nd year at the University of Kentucky; one is in his 2nd year at Kentucky State University.

Family Services - More than 100 parents participated in activities and services.

When families are engaged in their child’s learning and activities, youth are better prepared for school, have better social skills and are more likely to graduate high school. Neighborhood House provides opportunities for parents to be involved in activities with their child, as well as ways for them to grow their skills and knowledge, inspiring them to dream of what they want for themselves and their families.

100% of people who participated in parent workshops indicated positive changes in their family.

92% of parents in our family cooking classes indicated an understanding of the benefits of making healthy substitutions when cooking and indicated they felt they had the power to improve their health because of the classes.

83% or parents indicated being more concerned about their overall health and having a better understanding of the importance of healthy nutrition for their children.

The Four Seasons Program served 111 senior adults.

88% of seniors who attended two or more times a week reported a higher quality of life as a result of participating in our programs. Improving the quality of life for senior adults has a positive impact on the family and the entire community.

Food is a basic need and vital to overall health and growth. Individuals cannot learn and thrive if their nutritional needs are not met. We served over 2,000 families through our Food Bank. In addition to that, we served more than 45,000 nutritious meals at Neighborhood House to more than 2,700 individuals.
