ARTS AND DESIGN

Introduction To Relief Printing

Coming up in our ongoing ‘Ink Roll Print’ series of printmaking courses is our Introduction to Relief Printing with artist and tutor, Jackie Gorring.

This 6 week course, run in partnership with Castlemaine Press is perfect for the beginner or those wanting to explore a different printing technique.

This course will include printing from lino, woodblock and styrofoam, using traditional inking techniques as well as oil stick onto a variety of media. Participants will also learn to etch lino and combine relief printmaking techniques in multiple ways.

Mid-year intakeArt Pathways is a year long arts course where students learn and develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. CCE is making it easier for people to take part in our iconic Art Pathways course through Art Steps. Using both traditional and experimental drawing techniques each session takes you on a different road of discovery that not only gets you drawing the human figure more confidently but brings out possibilities for dynamic and exciting drawing. Throw Pots!!!

Introductory pottery course for beginners, tutored by renowned ceramic artist Dean Smith. Students will learn how to ‘throw’ pots on a pottery wheel to create a range of vessels such as Japanese tea bowls, noodle bowls, trinket bowls and pots. Students will learn how to prepare clay, centering techniques, throwing and turning techniques.

**Café Skills for Industry

CCE offers basic training in its fully equipped training kitchen. The course will provide barista training and coffee roasting experience, RSA training and basic food handling techniques while developing basic cooking and serving skills. This course is ideal for young people who have left school early and aren’t ready for assessment in accredited courses. Learners may then enrol to complete accredited hospitality units or courses with some confidence and experience.

**Indigenous planting and cooking

This unique course includes cultural awareness with Aunty Julie and Kathryn Coff. Learn about indigenous plants and their cultivation with Aunty Julie, Kathryn Coff and others from the Aboriginal Community here in Mount Alexander Shire. Cook with the Murnong Mammas. Hatha Yoga

This is a gentle class for bodies that require special understanding, with a good warm up and easing into postures that will suit a variety of levels. It is important not to strain or force the body, so we will be building up very gently and with respect. A ‘do what you can’ attitude is encouraged.

Wendy Ashton is a qualified yoga teacher of 25 years. Join her in class as she guides you through a session of warm ups and stretching, themed yoga poses, cool down, meditation and deep relaxation. Each class is designed to fit the needs of each individual and group. Wendy draws on many influences that will inspire you to reclaim your body and fill you once again with a positive approach toward yourself and your attitude to life.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Permaculture Design

Our course in Permaculture Design has been running for several years with very appreciative students. Tutors Ian Lillington and Beck Lowe guide the group through a 16-week course (96 hours in total) that will change your life!

We regularly make field trips to local properties that demonstrate the topics we are focusing on in class. The course covers the standard syllabus of a permaculture design course which includes ethics, design principles and theory on topics including soils, water, energy, building, animals, intensive gardens, orchards and broad-acre farms. Each week we offer suggested readings to course participants and occasional small exercises. The main study load comes in the last weeks as students work on a design project for presentation on the last day of the course. Our tutors are responsive to the needs of the students and the time spent in study outside of class is largely up to the individual student.

**Practical Guide to Landscaping Principles

Break of Day Gala Film Screening

The Maldon Movies Film Society is presenting a special screening of Break of Day on Thursday 6 July, celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release. Break of Day was filmed in Maldon in 1977 and features many of our well-known sites and locals.

Castlemaine Community House Spring Ball

Do yourself a favour, and mark Saturday 28 October in your diary for one of the Castlemaine community’s favourite social events.

The annual Castlemaine Community House Spring Ball fundraiser will once again be held at the Castlemaine Town Hall, and promises to be a fun-filled night of music and dancing, all for a worthwhile cause.

This year we will be celebrating the Australian TV music show COUNTDOWN, which aired from November 1974 until July 1987. The eminently capable and highly entertaining Spring Ball Band, with a selection of guest vocalists, will be sure to do justice to the fantastic range of music. There will be numerous other fun happenings.

Chat-Warblers

Chat-Warblers is a women’s a capella group led by Jane Thompson which is now over 40 strong. The choir meets to sing and socialise. This is a really welcoming group and new members are always appreciated.

Maine Song

Maine Song is a four-part male and female community choir. Directed by Wendy Rowlands, the songs vary in style including world music sometimes sung in other languages. Members have varied levels of reading skills and are encouraged to learn along the way. The aim is to make beautiful music together.

Castlemaine Children’s Choir

The Castlemaine Children’s Choir is now in its second year. It’s open to all children in the shire aged 7 and above who would enjoy singing in a larger group. The choir provides the opportunity to develop musical skills and perform as a group. Sessions involve: vocal warm ups; pitch and rhythm activities; music games; learning new pieces; and some collaboration with guest artists and local musicians.

This term the choir will also be offering a new group – for children and young people in grade 5 or above (based on demand). To join this group, some musical training or demonstrated formal skills is required. A short interview with some singing will be used to gauge readiness and pitch accuracy of those interested in joining.

Tim Watson is the choir leader. He studied music at the Victorian College of the Arts for ten years and has been a primary school teacher and teacher of music to a variety of ages. For more information contact Tim on 0432 747 731
