So we’re glad to know that Angelo is still a cat.

At last count, I think we have a gazillion baby burp cloths in this house thanks to the Queen of our local Aunt Colony. These rags aren’t just for babies.

At any given time, at least one of these rags is on the floor. Adam recently threw one down from his Exersaucer with Angelo in the room.

Like a wrestler, Angelo pounced his prey, tucking it close to his body as he rolled around. When you see a concert pianist stab the keys with his fingers, that’s what Angelo was doing to this rag.

Realizing he now had an audi-ence, Angelo flipped the rag into the air, jumping back to watch it land. Stalking it for a full half second just to make sure it wouldn’t fight back, Angelo leapt, with great bravado, and seized it once again.

Adam seems to be pretty enter-tained with such duels. There’s a scene in Walt Disney’s Fantasia where the brooms spring to life and begin multiplying. I can only guess that’s what Angelo thinks of these burp cloths. When you throw six into the laundry, 12 come out.

The toys are next. We’ve been pretty mindful about not bombard-

ing Adam with a bunch of plastic playthings. Needless to say, these stackable cups are like the baby rags. And with two new teeth, the handles on those things are great to chew on.

We’re also pleased to report Adam is enjoying the pureed carrots his mommy’s making him. We’ll be planting them this year. And hope-fully, we’ll have a bumper crop.

We should plant them next to the burp cloths.

Enjoy!Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Clos de Tue-Boeuf, Cheverny, 2007 – In the rolling hills of the Loire Valley, there is the town of Cheverny as well as the castle of Cheverny, which was said to have invented the French style in the early seventeenth century. I visited the Château de Cheverny in my late teens and fell in love not so much with the pure Louis XIII classical style and symmetrical architecture or the sumptuous furnishing, for unlike the majority of the castles of the Loire Cheverny is still inhabited, but by the beautiful pack of hounds that live in the fenced enclosure beside it. What people visiting the castles of the Loire might not know however is that there is also a wine of Cheverny, or several. Clos de Tue-Boeuf, owned by the Puzelat brothers and the closest thing to sulfite free, is one of a growing number of winer-ies producing organic wines with great taste and character. Made from a combination of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, the two main white grapes of the Loire, this wine exhibits a richness that belies the assumption

that Loire whites are light. The blend gives a complexity while the taste is fresh and clean, with notes of lime blossom and citrus. Pair with Asian cuisine, shellfish, fish or serve as an aperitif. $18.99

Les Grimaudes, Costières de Nîmes 2005 – From the Costières de Nîmes, the southern most wine producing region in the Rhône, this is my new favorite Grenache! All organic and loaded with ripe fruit. Look for notes of cherry, raspberry, blackberry. A stunning bargain at $12.99

Brézème, Côtes du Rhône, 2006 – The glory of wine is that we never know all and can always learn more, at least I can. Brézème, Côtes du Rhône, comes from a region sand-wiched between the northern and southern Rhône but closer to northern which I thought could not contain an appellation for Côtes du Rhône. Nor-mally we think of Côtes du Rhônes as fleshy, heady, fruit driven reds based on the Grenache grape. But Eric Texier’s Brézème acts more like a light Cornas or Hermitage, both in body, varietal and site. Located closer to Valence than Orange, it might not come as a surprise then that this wine

is 100 % Syrah. But the surprise is revealed in the price, for Brézème has the rich blackberry, raspberry, violet, black pepper, dried herbs, black olive and coffee scents of the great Côte Roties, but at $19.99 is a fraction of the cost.

La Vieille Ferme, rouge – I sup-pose we’re living through history, much like the everyday Romans were during what we now call the fall of Rome. So as we live through these cheery economic times, drowning our sorrows in fermented grape juice is not such a bad idea particularly if the wine is affordable. La Vieille Ferme is both affordable and excellent. All organic, and made by the Perrin brothers of the famous Château de Beacastel, La Vieille Ferme is a light red, a blend of good southern grapes, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Cari-gnan. ‘The Old Farm’ has a picture of rooster and a chicken on the label so Bev and I have dubbed it ‘The Chick-en Wine’ and obviously that’s caught on for customers come in asking for the chicken wine. $8.99.

MARCH 009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 1

When he’s not making wine, Jeff Stone of Win-tergreen Winery is setting up a lacrosse field for a dozen girls. His motivation?

“Alanna and Delaney are the first two reasons,” he says, speaking of his daughters, ages 9 and 7. “They really wanted to play. There really aren’t any opportunities for girls to play lacrosse out here.”

Though new to Nelson County, the sport wasn’t new to Jeff. He played a lot of hockey and box lacrosse – an indoor version of lacrosse invented in Canada during the 1930s as a way to boost summer business for ice hockey rinks – was a natural exten-sion of the sport.

“It’s a rough game but in the girls’ game, especially the youth game, [high sticking] is not al-lowed,” explains Jeff. “First of all, in the women’s game, contact is pretty much all stick to stick any-way. It’s not the wide open, super physical game that you see in Division I Men’s games. Women’s lacrosse is a game that requires high levels of skill in every aspect of the game.”

And for the girl’s youth version, it means Coach Jeff can’t be running around with a men’s stick. At least, not all the time.

“Watching Jeff handle that big pink one, that’s cute too!” says soccer mom-turned lacrosse mom

Nicole Aravey, who is sitting on the sideline watch-ing her daughter, Maxine, run around the field.

“I have two daughters. I’ve been dressed up in all kinds of things,” Jeff says, laughing.

That pink stick, however, does pack some punch.

“It’s harder to handle the ball with [this] stick,” Jeff admits. “It’s harder to shoot. It’s the most dif-ficult stick in the world. I’ve been out here all day messing around with the women’s stick and I’ve got to tell you, it’s a lot harder than the guy’s stick.”

In a field full of pony tails, Coach Jeff is clearly outnumbered. But if there’s anything louder than a 10 year-old girl’s squeal, it is the sound of the whistle around her coach’s neck.

“What do we do when the coach is talking?”“Be quiet and listen,” the girls say. That’s one of the many habits, Jeff says, he

wants the girls to pick up. During this practice, the girls are learning how to scoop the ball and shoot it. The 5-gallon paint buckets between the goals are part of an agility drill.

Work hard, play hard. It’s a little like making wine, Jeff says.

“I guess the biggest similarity is if you want something to turn out good, you’d better address it early on,” Jeff says as the girls take a water break.

“So, from that standpoint, just giving the girls a good solid base of fundamentals. Scooping the ball, shooting the ball, passing the ball, the ability to run and carry it and not drop it ... Just like in wine making, really, we try to address most of the things that we want to fix hopefully, before we har-vest the fruit, and if not then, we address it shortly afterwards. I find that the general nature of things is the older they get, the more resistant to change they are. So that applies here, too.”

The league, which was spread mostly by word-of-mouth through Rockfish River and Tye River Elementary, hopes to begin scrimmaging area youth teams as the season progresses. So far, the money to buy the gear has been raised privately. And Jeff says he hopes he can raise additional money to purchase items like eye protection. After all, though they’re pretty in pink, little girls can tear up a field just like the boys.

“First and foremost I hope they learn how to have fun playing a game,” Jeff says, calling the girls back to the field. “This is supposed to be a past time and good time. I guess too often we make sports a little bit more important than they really need to be ... I hope that one day we put somebody through our program here that winds up with a scholarship to play at one of the great schools.” NCL

The girls’ lacrosse league is meeting Wednesday afternoons at Wintergreen Winery. For more information or to make a donation call Jeff Stone at -61-519.

When Shinko and Tony Corpora came to Afton Mountain, there were only 40 wineries in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Now, 21 years later, there are almost 150.

The Corporas purchased what is now Afton Mountain Vineyard in 1988. The property they bought contains some of the oldest European wine grape vines in the state and consistently wins regional, national and even international awards at wine competitions.

The 12 acres of vineyards were planted in the late 1970s by David Mefford and sold about 10 years later to the Corporas. Originally Mefford, who lived in Richmond, wanted to retire to Af-ton Mountain and open a winery. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer and that dream was never realized. The Corporas bought the property with an understanding by Mefford that they would continue to run the vineyard as a real family-oriented operation.

“It was a very difficult thing for his fam-ily and I think he saw this family, our family, coming along and saying, ‘We want to pick it up where you left off,’” remembered Shinko Cor-pora. “And I think the fact that we were trying to do it as a family was one of the incentives for him to take our offer.”

Now, after 20 years of growing grapes and making wine, the Corpora family is selling the 52-acre farm to Elizabeth and Tony Smith, Albemarle County natives who currently live in Suffolk.

Early this decade, the Corporas tried to sell the vineyard.

“At that time we thought, ‘Well, better to try to sell it when things are still good than when we’re too old and can’t do anything,’” said Shinko.

After 9/11, they had no luck selling, but their youngest son, Robbie, was able to help work as his father slowed down. After that, the Corpora family never again thought about selling Afton Mountain Vineyard.

That is, until the Smiths came along. Over the years, they have frequently visited Central

Virginia, their home region and in recent years, the couple has become more and more interested in wine.

First they participated in a four-day seminar at the University of Virginia, then they started taking classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College. They were hooked.

When a vineyard consultant told them that their farm near Carter’s Bridge wasn’t an ideal place to grow grapes, they started looking elsewhere. They were looking for a place to start fresh and expecting to have three to five years before they saw any wine. But that’s when they found Afton Mountain and now they’ve got three to five months.

Elizabeth and Tony officially start April 1 carrying along with them the tradition of a fam-ily-run business. Their 23-year-old son and his soon-to-be wife are moving to the area to help run the vineyard. (The Smiths’ daughter, 22, graduates from UVa in May.)

The Corporas will stay on for a few months to consult, but then they’re outta here – most likely to California, as bittersweet as it may be to say goodbye to Afton Mountain.

The Smiths’ timeline is a little shorter than they once expected, which can be daunting, but exciting.

“We started with ‘It’s a beautiful site,’” said Elizabeth Smith, explaining why they chose Afton Mountain. “But the time we’ve come to know the Corporas and what they’ve done…hearing the people come to them and know them and what they’ve done so well… it has enhanced what we know we’re getting into.” NCL

Is your glass half empty or half full? Unfortunately national news has most of us concerned and depressed. The silver lining in this economic cloud is that spring typically breathes new life into the housing market, so make a point this spring to change your outlook, attitude, and quite pos-sibly your results. Sure America may be in a so-called “housing crisis”, but homes are still selling! Turn off the news and get to primping, fluffing, and staging your home. A well priced and well staged home can “set the stage” for a sale this spring. Here are a few staging tricks of the trade.

Prepare for staging. Before stag-

ing, a house must first be cleaned, painted, and repaired as needed. It must also be de-cluttered. Remove books from shelves, pack the knick-knacks, and clear the countertops.

Depersonalize! Pack away any-thing that makes the house “yours” instead of “theirs”. Take down family

photos and put away the family heir-looms and collectibles.

Strip to the bare essentials. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding.

Create positive focal points. Take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allow-ing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view.

Highlight the key rooms. Kitch-ens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets. Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers,

fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and stage a bath with decorative towels, soaps, candles, spa baskets, flowers, and floral pictures to set the ambiance of the room.

Don’t forget the outside. Out-door living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat you deck or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers.

Spruce up the appeal. Room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics such as silk, lambs wool, or satin.

Arrange fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or indoors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser.

Strive for cheerful and bright. Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sun-shine pour in. Consider removing all window coverings to bring the outside indoors.

Appeal to all the senses. Make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with or-ange peels and cinnamon.

If you follow these tips, you will be selling a lifestyle… where buyers can imagine themselves entertaining their friends, cooking a gourmet meal, or soaking in a luxurious bath… a place where “their” dreams can come true.

“I didn’t know a lick about chickens,”said John Dobbs, referring to his experience prior to being hired as Manager of Black Eagle Farm. “I knew they laid eggs.”

And now he has 52,000 under his care, laying 4,000 dozen eggs a day. That’s nearly 50,000 eggs. A day.

And they’re organic eggs, laid by Bovan Reds and Highline Reds fed corn, soy beans and wheat from an organic mill in Pennsylvania, and allowed to roam to eat whatever grubs and insects they can.

Indeed, as Dobbs stands by a fence outside the Big Dutchman aviary, large enough to enclose thousands of hens, several come running up to him, perhaps seeking a handout. This is the product of animal-friendly management at Black Eagle, and it extends to the 500 or so goats, 250 cows, 350 ewes and 25 hog sows Dobbs and five farm workers preside over.

The hens lay large eggs tinted brown. The yolks are a deeper yellow than standard supermarket eggs. The goal, says Dobbs, is “affordable organics.”

That is the dream of Dr. Ralph Glatt, president of Black Eagle Farm, which was purchased by his father, Ernest Werner Glatt, in 1979 and comprises 1,000 acres. Other farms in Nelson County and the rest of Virginia produce organic and free-range eggs, but Black Eagle is the first to do it on such a large scale.

Since 1895, Glatt’s family has owned a farm in Scotland that happens to be in the watershed of the city of Edinburgh. “We couldn’t use chemicals because they would get into the city’s drinking water,” he says. It was his father’s policy for many

years to farm naturally, rather than with chemi-cals. Black Eagle is the largest farm of its kind in Virginia.

Dobbs was familiar with large-scale farming from his upbringing in central Kansas, where he raised hogs and cattle and milked 400 dairy goats in partnership with his parents. When his par-ents and grandfather retired and the partnership dissolved, he managed a feed lot, raised corn in Nebraska and farmed in Oklahoma.

But in July, 2007, he responded to an ad on the internet and Glatt hired him as assistant manager of Black Eagle. When the manager retired, Dobbs took his position. He was attracted to Black Eagle by the opportunity to practice organic farming. “I

had farmed conventionally with chemicals in the Midwest and spraying was all there was to farm-ing. You didn’t work the ground.”

At Black Eagle he has 350 acres of tillable land and the goal is to farm all of it organically. Dobbs wants to do away with corn and soy – he says animals can be allergic to it – and replace it with organically grown milo, wheat, rye and cow peas.

So, while Black Eagle sells beef, pork, lamb and goat, some of it from a small store at the farm, for now only the eggs are organic. The meat, however, is raised naturally, without added hormones, antibi-otics or animal by-products.

Meeting National Organic Program standards is important to Black Eagle. In addition to saying the animals are fed organic grains, it means the ani-mals are allowed access to fresh air and daylight. The large barn housing goats and sheep has one entire side that is open to the outside. Dobbs says the goal is to be certified as 100 percent organic for the livestock by 2011.

But back to the production of organic eggs. Black Eagle gets pullets when they are two days old. When they are 18 weeks old, they are trans-ferred to the layer house where they are trained to lay eggs between 4 and 7 a.m. so packing can be-gin at 7:30. The hens have access to multiple levels of laying cages and can move freely to the out-doors. Two different ventilation systems provide a consistent 80 degree temperature and keep dust to a minimum. Dobbs proudly says only 2 percent of the eggs are laid on the floor. That leaves more than 18 million eggs a year to sell.

Dobbs and Glatt spend a good deal of their time finding buyers for those eggs as well as for the meat. Black Eagle was the first to take advantage of a Washington, DC-area program for restaurants called “Farm to Table,” and they have sold to Whole Foods, Ukrops and SuperFresh. But Nelson County and the surrounding area are important to them as well and they support the recent trend to

buy locally-grown food. Dobbs delivers eggs and meat to Wintergreen Grocery and local restaurants such as Vito’s, Devils Backbone, and the Lovings-ton Cafe.

Black Eagle is giving back to the community as well. They donate at least 300 dozen eggs a month to the Nelson County Food Pantry, and many more to the Richmond Food Pantry and Metro Food Bank in Washington, DC. And Dobbs’ oldest daughter, Sarah, 13, helps out at the Nelson Pantry.

Dobbs and his wife Jill have three other daugh-ters, Jennifer, 11, Jaeden, 8 and Dakota, 5, who help out at the Black Eagle Store. It’s fair to say they know more than a lick about chickens now. NCL

Black Eagle Farm is located on a private road, Martin Lane, off Rt. 56 in Piney River, right oppositeSaunders Brothers PackingShed and Nursery.

52,000 chickens laying 4,000 dozen eggs a day. You do the math.

Elizabeth Stone has a passion for animals. And a passion for pictures. She got a degree in biology, but after taking a photography class, she

knew she wanted to do something more creative with her life. She went to school at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Mo. and has been snapping photos professional since 1994.

Now a teacher at the photography school she once attended, Stone sold a book called “Small Lives” to Ben Hernandez, a student from the Nelson area.

“Small Lives” is one of Stone’s photography books about homeless animals.

Not long after purchasing the book, Hernandez and his parents, all ar-dent supporters of the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, came to Stone with a request.

“Ben called me and wanted to know about doing a similar project,” said Stone. “That started the trip here and the last four days at the shelter.”

Stone had never done a project like this outside of Missoula, but she agreed whole-heartedly. While she was here, she took photograph upon photograph of animals up for adoption.

With the portraits of the animals, Stone will create a book that will act as a fund raiser for the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center. Well, two, actually.

“The book will be available in two forms,” she explained. “We’ll have kind of an affordable coffee table type of book with text.”

Rita Mae Brown will be writing the prologue for that book. All of the proceeds will go back to the Adoption Center.

The other version of the book will be hand-made by Stone and only limited number of copies will be available, one of which will be auc-tioned at this year’s Animal House Ball May. NCL

Mikel McGrew can sew up a storm. In fact, when he’s at his best, he’s sewing cats and dogs.

Mikel, who first used a treadle sewing machine at the ripe old age of two, has been making stuffed cats and dogs for the Animal House Ball table centerpieces since its inception.

Way back in 2001, when the plans for the ball were just arising, local author and animal lover Rita Mae Brown, invited Mikel and his late partner John to help with the decorations for the fund raiser that was created to bring a no-kill animal shelter to Nelson County.

The first five years, the then-annual event was held in the Skyline Room at Wintergreen Resort.

“At the time, [that room] was really the only place in Nelson County large enough to hold a ball,” Mikel remembered.

But it wasn’t exactly everything he hoped and dreamed for.

“It was January and they were using the Skyline Room as the day locker room for the ski season,” he recalled. “And we went in and it was all dark teal and burgundy and was full of lockers and it smelled like a locker room.”

That was when he and John decided the decora-

tions would have to be on the tables. After a little bit of brainstorming, Mikel realized he had a bunch of calico sitting at home. He asked the ball’s plan-ning committee for some gingham and some stuff-ing and made 35 stuffed calico cats and 35 stuffed gingham dogs to sit, paired, in galvanized French flower cans at the center of each table.

“And that first year I think people were really impressed with what we did,” said Mikel.

Each year after that first year of calico cats and gingham dogs, Mikel has worked with the ball’s theme to create 72 little stuffed creatures (one cat and one dog for each table plus one of each for posterity).

This year, like it was in 2007, the now bi-annual ball is at the Carriage House at Oak Ridge Estate and Mikel’s working on beached themed furry friends.

“The centerpiece will be tall and thin like a palm tree trunk and then it’ll branch out at the top,” said Mikel, explaining this year’s table décor which will appear to be on an island floating in the sea. “The dogs and cats will all be in fabrics that are either printed in fish or ocean themes or water themes. And there will be a dog and a cat out of each or 35

different fabrics and they’ll all be mixed up so that a dog and cat of the same fabric isn’t used on the same table.”

Each animal will have a tiny “collar” with “Ani-mal House Ball 2009” printed on it. Every plush kit-ten will be wearing sunglasses and the pups will be ready for play with sand castle-building equipment.

Mountain Area Realty’s Julie Bendle, who helps organize the event, is excited to be having both a silent and live auction plus an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner, live entertainment from BS&M, wines from Cardinal Point and Veritas and, for the first time, beer from Devils Backbone Brewing Company.

The Animal House Ball will be “A Day at the Beach,” there’s no doubt about that. But for the planning committee, the real fun starts before the ball at the stuffing party.

“We normally have a crew of about eight of us that go over there and it becomes pretty funny and raucous because you can imagine us trying to get stuffing into the tails especially of the animals, the dogs and cats… they’re supposed to be perky, you know?” said Julie, laughing. “And the ears, it’s kind of hard sometimes to get into the ears. But it is a blast.” NCL

Mikel McGrew’s the man behind the stuffed animal table displays at the Animal House Ball. This year’s ball, benefitting the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, is Saturday, May 9 at The Carriage House at Oak Ridge Estate. Tickets for couples are $175, and $95 for “strays.” To book a spot, call -61-0. To donate, call -989-7918.

We are now finishing the 16th month of the recession, which began in December 2007, according to the Na-tional Bureau of Economic Research. Not only is this a long recession, but it’s also a severe one, marked by painfully high levels of job losses, a sharply reduced credit flow and a drop in the value of many investments. Still, despite all the bad news, there are valid reasons to believe that brighter days lie ahead. But you don’t have to wait for things to turn around before taking steps to help your own financial future.

Here are some actions to consider:

• Don’t cut back on your 401(k). During difficult economic times, it’s hard for many people to assume their jobs are safe. But if you are fairly confident your employment situation is secure, continue investing in your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. The tax advantages of these types of plans — not to men-tion the employer’s match, if one is offered— make them ideal savings vehicles for retirement. Of course, your

plan probably has taken a hit over the past year, but that’s the case for many investments. If you’ve chosen a good mix of investments, your plan should recover at some point.

• Diversify, diversify, diversify. Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to tie up more than 5 percent of your portfolio in a single investment. Spread your investment dollars among a wide range of stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit and other securities. For a rough idea on how well you’ve diversi-fied, ask yourself: “If the value of a few of my stocks and bonds declined and didn’t recover, would it be extremely painful for me financially?” If the answer is “yes,” you probably need more diversification. Of course, diver-sification by itself cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss, but it can give you more chances for success and reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

• Think long term. Your investments may have lost 30 percent to 40 percent of their value from October 2007 to the present — which may seem like a long

time. Yet quality investments often need much longer periods to show significant growth. So while it can be painful to endure short-term losses, you need to develop the discipline to hold your investments for many years.

• Look for opportunities. Instead of avoiding the financial markets, look for good investment opportunities. Be-cause investment prices have fallen so much, your dollars can now buy more shares. Historically, buying shares at lower prices has often led to higher returns over the long term. If you’re re-ceiving dividends, now is an especially good time to reinvest them.

You probably can’t avoid all the

negative effects of the recession. But by following the above suggestions, you can help avoid getting thrown off track on your journey toward your financial goals.

How to Invest During a Recession

Winter Daphne

Perhaps one of my most trea-sured shrubs in my landscape had me turning in circles recently around my patio. I couldn’t tell if the sweet, slightly spicy smell that I was detecting was originating from my landscape or house. About 25 feet away from me were my Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, or Winter Daphne, just beginning to open. The fragrant, rose then whitish blooms, along with some very interesting, mostly evergreen, variegated foliage has always kept this plant on the top of my list of favorite plants. However, this plant is not for the amateur gardener – it requires protection, great soil preparation, proper placement, and just the right amount of sunlight. Follow these basic instructions for a plant that you too will fall in love with instantly.

Before you get in the mood for your first purchase for the spring season, keep in mind that Daphne is typically a slow grower – and I em-phasize s-l-o-w. The exact amount of growth a year will be dependent on how well you can follow the

following instructions but it is not unheard of to see only a couple of inches per year. They typically ma-ture around 3.5 feet tall by 3.5 feet wide after many years. I encourage my clients to buy big on this one, around 18-20 inches or so because of its growth rate.

When locating your planting spot, keep in mind that due to their fleshy leaves Daphne do not like the blustery winter winds. There-fore place them on the east or south side of a structure or windbreak. The trick is that once you plant this gem, consider it in cement – they don’t transplant well at all. Not to further complicate things, but the challenge now is to find a ‘mar-riage’ between protection and the right exposure; shade or part sun. and proximity to an outdoor room, patio, screened porch or other areas where guests and family members will have the opportunity to enjoy its delightful fragrance.

Soil preparation is critical with this plant. Just as we would with any plant in our landscape work, we really work the soil deep and thorough. If you are part of the population that digs a hole, drops

the plant in and forgets about it, you better stop reading right here and seriously consider something more in the lines of Forsythia or Kudzu (refer to March’s article on soil preparation). Do NOT locate this plant in a low lying area since it wants to be well away from standing water. If your area stays moist, not wet, for extended periods, dig your hole about 5 inches deeper and place about 5 inches of gravel (called #57) in the bottom of the hole and then add your soil mix (again refer to

March’s article). Regarding varieties, I like the

variegated species Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’ (variegated) but there continues to be tons of interest in some others like Daphne ‘Carol Mackie’ (variegated) and of course the straight species Daphne odora. With that said, any of these plants will have visitors to your garden turning in circles seeking the source of the fantastic fragrance.

Until our next article,Welcome to Spring!

Exploring theIntuitive Mind

Dear Dr. Steve,My infant is fussy after he drinks

formula. Could he have cow’s milk allergy?

Infants are truly joyous. But, they also can be a true source of mystery, noise, sleep deprivation, spit ups, and certainly fussiness! I have had two of them in the last three years that prove all of the above, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Parents often worry that their infant may have cow’s milk allergy. It is actually not very common, af-fecting only about 2% of babies. It happens when a baby’s immune sys-tem falsely recognizes the proteins in cow’s milk, usually casein and whey, as a threat and mounts a response against them. As in other allergic reactions, this response can lead to lots of unpleasant (and occasionally dangerous) symptoms. We don’t fully understand why this happens, but suspect that it does run in families. The good news is that almost all babies with cow’s milk allergy will outgrow it by age 3-5 years.

There are two types of reactions that can happen. One can come on in seconds to hours. The baby develops

hives or other rashes, severe vomit-ing, swelling, bloody diarrhea and even difficulty breathing. Thankfully this is not very common. More often, there is the slow onset of symptoms over hours to days. These include loose stools sometimes tinged with blood, vomiting, gagging, irritability, and rash. Both only happen after the baby ingests cow’s milk. However, it is important to realize that the source can be from formula or even from breast milk from a mom who drinks or eats a lot of dairy.

If these sorts of symptoms are hap-pening to your infant, the first step is a visit to your baby’s doctor. If you and your doc decide that it is a cow’s milk allergy you might try limiting the amount of dairy in your diet if you are breast feeding, or giving alternative formula to a formula fed baby as directed by your doctor.

Enjoy your infant, and first and foremost, give him lots of love – there is no allergy to that!

This month’s column is written by Polly Williams, a spiritual coach and reiki practitioner in Nellysford. She was a banker for 18 years while simulta-neously pursuing a number of spiri-tual teachings. She was raised in the Episcopal church, she trained for Reiki mastership, a study of Native American Earth based religion, Buddhist medita-tion and teachings, the study of intuitive pathways. Her unique background in both left and right brain experiences allows her to understand her clients wherever they are in their process, and help them access their own truth without judgement and honor for their path.

Honoring The Intuitive Mind“I want to know the thoughts of God,

the rest are just details. The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and a rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” Quote by Albert Einstein.

Each of us has our own unique experiences with intuition. For example, remember the time when you were busy at work and had a sudden impulse to

check on your child? When you did, you learned she was sick and needed to come home from school. Where did that feeling come from? Intuition comes from the part of us that is detached from the rational mind. Webster’s definition is “the power of knowing ... without inference or reasoning.” Intuition often brings light to ideas that don’t make rational sense but can be a great solution or inspiration.

How does one tap into innate wis-dom? Intuition generally shows up in one of four ways. It can be a sensation in your gut, a little voice in your head, a dream or vision in your sleep, or a “knowing” that just feels right. You can improve the effectiveness of working with your intuition by paying closer attention to these signs and acting on them. The more you do this, the cleared and more frequent the messages will become.

So start listening to your gut, your knowing, and your heart. Solutions to previously unresolved problems may present themselves in unique ways and you may feel grace in the process. The sky is truly the limit.

Jimmy Carter was president. Sony intro-duced the Walkman. Cellular telephones were being tested in Chicago.

Dobie Fish left Florida for Nelson County.

“I was cooking in the kitchen, then spring of the year I left I went into landscaping and I moved into the sign shop where we made all the wooden signs and stuff like that,” Dobie tells me from his office inside the firehouse on the mountaintop.

Three years later, Dobie started volun-teering with the Wintergreen Fire Depart-ment. “We didn’t have a fire department. What we had was old Engine 1 which is now down in Wingina, and that was sitting in a bay up in golf maintenance,” Dobie said.

As the years ticked by, Dobie eventu-ally became the Assistant Fire Chief. 2009 marks Dobie’s 30 year of service.

“When you think about it, you start think-ing back, ‘Has it been 30 years?’ It doesn’t seem like 30 years.”

“The first thing that would come to mind is that he’s a guy who’s ethics and morals are impeccable.,” says Dobie’s boss, Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets “He’s very con-sistent, he’s just kind of the rock that keeps us together. He’s steady. He’s thoughtful.”

During these past three decades, Dobie’s seen just about everything. He’ll never forget a call he responded to some 10 years ago.

“Our plane crash into the house,” Dobie says, remembering the event. “The plane was tore up to heck. They actually un-strapped from the seats and jumped down out of it.”

As for another 30 years, Dobie would link to think it’d happen. “It’s a job that you go home feeling good at the end of the day.” NCL
