Truth or dare.Truth: Adam and Bert are insepa-

rable.Dare: When your brother isn’t

looking, Peyton, go ahead and snatch him!

Truth: Peyton has sprouted her first pair of baby teeth.

Truth: Adam all of a sudden likes frozen teething rings.

Truth: Adam all of a sudden wants to eat apple sauce from a baby spoon.

Truth: Peyton really likes Adam’s dump truck.

Dare: The next time Adam wants a frozen teething ring but won’t let Peyton play with the dump truck, Bert goes in the freezer.

Truth: Adam’s new orange shoes are so bright, they could be mistaken for traffic cones.

Dare: Adam, try not to take those shoes off in the car. Mommy doesn’t like it when you hurl them to the front.

Truth: A strange man approached me at the Oyster Fest saying we had gone to high school together. I flat out told him that was the oldest line in the book. But sure enough, it was Andy Taylor, TJHSST Class of ‘95 Homecoming King, and football quarterback if I remember correctly.

He dared me to write about this. There, I’ve done it.

Truth: When former high school newspaper editors grow up and launch their own magazines, they fol-low through on their dares.

Dare: Mr. Homecoming King/Football & Soccer rockstar should join our Team Nelson Tough Mud-der team. I am confident his in-laws – who live out here – would love to see Andy run up a muddy hill. He can even bring a cheerleader.

Enjoy!Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Friend BASIC NECESSITIES

Château de SégrièsIn April a little group of oddly

assorted wine tasters traveled across the sunlit fields of the Luberon valley and finished the voyage overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean in Nice. I think because the group was small, everyone bonded together and special friendships were made that I hope will endure. Fortunately for me, this group consisted of serious wine enthusiasts and as such, it was a pleasure to intro-duce my eager cohorts to the families and wines I have for so long loved.

One of the many high points of the trip, and I think all of the group would agree, was a visit to Château de Ségriès, a winery outside the town of Lirac in the Southern Rhône valley. What I love about Ségriès, and about many of the producers here, is that wine-making is a family affair and one can easily find the members and in-laws of a couple of families work-ing with joy and with pride to put out their wines. Château de Ségriès, once the property of Count de Regis de Gatimel, is now owned by the de Lan-zan family. (In France “de” denotes nobility, but there is not one ounce of

snootiness or superiority found among this hardworking family, just a healthy respect for the vines and the land on which they thrive.) Father Henri and daughter Anne, married to Frederic Grasset, winemaker for the estate, and brother Laurent all work together to make wines with true terroir.

Château de Ségriès translates liter-ally to “castle of the spring.” The use of “Château” to designate a vineyard is the norm in Bordeaux; in Burgundy one often finds the word “Domaine” and in Provence one sees also “Mas” or “Bastide,” variations of provençal farmhouses. “Castle of the spring” or “source” in this case is appropriate as the winery was founded on the site of an old spring which one can see, from a hole dug in the floor, flowing beneath stored barrels of wine. And when Anne told me her daughter’s name was Manon, I laughed and exclaimed, “Ah, Manon de Source! (“Manon of the spring.”) And if you not seen the movie, the sequel to Jean de Florette, do! French classics both of them.

As if a tour of the vineyards, cellar and a tasting were not enough, we were afterward invited to Anne and

Frederic’s home and served an elegant yet simple luncheon on the terrace beneath a vine and rose-covered arbor. Reluctant to leave, we stayed for hours in this slice of Provençal heav-en, and of course flowing throughout the many courses, were the wines the family had made together a few short years ago.

Château de Ségriès, Tavel, 2009 – Considered the best rosé in France, Tavel is a deep orange, dry rosé that’s big and rich—not a wine for quaffing by the poolside, more a substitute for red wine in summer. Look for aromas of candied orange, orange blossom, strawberry, watermelon, kirsch and spices. Pairs best with anything gar-licy, spicy cuisine such as Thai, BBQ, pork and grilled meats. $16

Château de Ségriès, Lirac, 2008 – Full of black cherry, blueberry and raspberry notes. Look also for aromas of cloves, nutmeg, new leather and cassis. Close your eyes, and I think you can taste the love this family adds to their wines. $16

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMSPHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

Rob Hawkins is ananalog man

living in adigital world.

Page 10: Nelson County Life, Issue #75

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JUNE 011

Tucked away in a home off a gravel road in Nelson County (we won’t say which one), Rob Hawkins restores vintage guitar amps, bringing back a sound digital devices just can’t reproduce.

Page 11: Nelson County Life, Issue #75

JUNE 011 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 11

Technology today is small, efficient, and usually quite beneficial to the user in everyday life. But with the ease of technology comes a few sacrifices: there is no more scratch of vinyl when a favorite song plays; the keys on the keyboard don’t make quite the same satisfying “clack” as they used to on the old keyboard; and, as Rob Hawkins can tell you – some musical amplifiers just don’t have the same sound.

Rob, a long-time Nelsonian, has been working on antique guitar amps since the mid-1990s when he stopped working on foreign cars and started teaching himself how to improve the quality of the music he played and listened to.

“I’m a player, too, and I’ve gigged around here a lot,” said Rob, who used to play with an eclectic local band but now tends to play alone. “Slowly, at night, I taught myself how to do this – how to fix these old amplifiers while I was working on cars in the daytime.”

Amplifiers, much like older television sets, used to be manufactured with glass tubes. In fact, they were so common, anyone could buy one if his own broke.

“Back in the old days, you could walk into a drug store and put ‘em in a tube tester and buy your own tubes if you needed ‘em,” said Rob.

But nowadays, technology has made those tubes and the amplifiers that go with them (along with most typewriters and letter openers) a thing of the past.

Or so we thought.Nowadays, those amps that were manufactured

on a mass scale in the 1950s and 1960s can sell for as much as $10,000.

“Guitar players like playing through tube ampli-fiers because of the warmth of the tone and how

you can overdrive them in a nice, characteristic way,” explained Rob. “The average Joe doesn’t even know it’s there or that it is the reason why a particular player has a particular sound.”

But as Rob says, “Guitar players are picky.” And they can tell.

There are some boutiques cropping up here and there that use new technologies to make the old-style amplifiers with the same old-style sound, but some die-hard old-school players argue that there’s nothing like the real thing. And that’s where Rob comes in.

“I actually repair [vintage amps], and, to some extent, restore them,” he said, noting that just because an amp needs repair does not make it less worthy. “You couldn’t have a 1965 car with origi-nal tires on it. Certain pieces wear out just because of time.”

Rob, who is nearing a self-imposed retirement, is not actively looking for work, but somehow the amps (and their owners) always seem to find him.

“I get work from all over,” though he did say that, for the most part, his customers are local or at least regional. “People send me stuff from all over or they drive it to me. And I work for music stores around here.”

Back when he first started, he advertised a bit, but now his customer base consists mostly of play-ers who have gotten recommendations for other customers.

A couple famous customers include Paul Thom-as (the Statler Brothers guitar player), Sons of Bill (the Charlottesville band), Charlie Pasterfield, and Billy Brockman.

But, then again, Rob doesn’t do it for the fame. He does it for the music. NCL

Keeping ChickensSTORY by LYNN COFFEY

The itch to keep a flock of chickens began in 1994 although I was totally ignorant when it came to the care of poultry. My husband Billy had chick-ens years before and knew what type of housing they needed and a neighbor who kept a variety of breeds, often talked to me about her hens. When the “itch” became reality, I called to ask her a boatload of questions as to what I should watch for in a backyard flock. She was wise in telling me, “Spend time with your chickens, observe what they do and they will teach you everything you need to know.” At the time I thought that was pretty odd advice but in the years I’ve kept chickens, her words proved true.

Lynn Coffey was the founder and punlisher of “Backroads Magazine.” She is wrapping up “The Road to Chicken Holler,” a book that is part of the popular Backroads series. For more information, visit her site:backroadsbooks.com

Billy converted an empty shed into a state of the art hen house that we referred to as the “Chicken Hilton” which housed the twelve Rhode Island Reds we bought from Johnny Falls over in Afton. The hens were four months old when we crated them up and brought them home and Johnny said they would have to get used to their new surroundings for a week or two before starting to lay eggs. Imag-ine my surprise and total delight when the next morning I found two small brown eggs in the nest boxes.

After a week or so we began letting the hens out of their fenced lot to free range around the cabin. I laughed at their enthusiasm as they scratched around in the dirt, looking for worms and other tasty insect morsels. A hen named Olga started following me around like a puppy and one morning I turned over a large rock and watched in amazement as she swooped in, gob-bling up the worms that lay under-neath. She clucked wildly as I walked to another rock and flipped it over with a repeat performance of the first. After that, Miss Olga and I had an agreement that at some point in each day, I’d flip over a few rocks to satisfy her worm compulsion.

When roosters became part of the equation, I was impressed with how carefully they watched over the hens. If a hawk was spotted overhead, he’d sound a screeching alarm that sent the “girls” diving for cover. One rooster by the name of Woodrow, who lived to be twelve years old, had the patience of Job with the little chicks the mama hens raised. He’d sit in the grass with the peeps jumping over and under him and if one pecked at his eyes, he’d simply shut them or tuck his head un-der his wing. If Woody scratched up a fat worm, he’d break it up into pieces, make a loud cackling sound and then stand back while the hens devoured it. He never took anything for himself so I made sure he got some kind of treat later in the day. It was the same way with the hens. You want to see a four pound chicken turn into The Termina-

tor, just mess with her babies! If danger is eminent she’ll puff out larger than life, tuck all the chicks underneath her and squawk loudly at the intruder, giving them pause as to whether they want to mess with this kind of whirling der-vish. Mama hens are also known to raise babies that aren’t their own. I once had a Buff Orpinton hen called Amelia who adopted a whole brood of week-old chicks we bought at a farm store. She be-came their surrogate mother, fuss-ing over the peeps and protecting them from other hens just as if she hatched them herself. I am struck by the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:37, “Oh Jerusalem, how often would have I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings.”

The most important aspect I learned about keeping a flock of backyard chickens is that both the rooster and hens know how to take care of their families and do what’s best for them at all times. We humans could learn valu-able lessons by simply observing the animals God created which instinctively know what they are born to do. NCL

Summer Jobs – Tax and Money Tips for Working Teens

Most of us have vivid memories of our first part-time or summer job. Mine was working as a waitress at a family-style restaurant. My supervi-sor was a staunch woman who had retired from the Marines! We were each assigned numbers that were used instead of our names. Those who showed up late or without a clean uniform were sent home.

I owe a great deal of thanks to that tough supervisor – I learned to show up on time and be ready for work. I learned to take pride in doing a job right – even if it was just serving hamburgers and fries. And, I loved counting my money at the end of each day.

Getting Started: If you are under 16, your employer will require you to have a work permit from school. There are exceptions for certain types of employment and for those who work for their parents. You will also have to complete an employment verification form (I-9) and provide documentation such as your birth certificate or driver’s license.

Wages: The minimum wage for most workers is $7.25 per hour. Employers are permitted to reduce this to $4.25 per hour for teens in their first 90 days of employment. If you earn tips, the wage paid by the employer may be reduced to $2.13 per hour.

Taxes: Your take-home pay will be reduced by amounts that your employer withholds for the payment of taxes. All employees will have amounts withheld for Medicare tax (at the rate of 1.45 percent of your pay) and Social Security tax (at the rate of 4.2 percent of your pay).

When you begin your job, your em-ployer should require you to complete tax withholding forms that deter-mine the amount of federal and state income tax withheld (Forms W-4 and VA-4). If you expect to earn less than $5,700 for the entire year, you may be exempt from withholding and should enter this on the forms. Otherwise, you will have additional amounts withheld for these taxes as well.

Payday! When you receive your

check, make sure you have been paid for the correct number of hours. You should also review the amounts with-held from your pay. If you have don’t understand your paystub, ask your employer for additional information.

Bank it! This is a great time to open your first bank account. You may need to have your parent’s ap-proval. Establishing a bank account and managing your money carefully will help build up your credit rating for the day when you want to buy your first car. Put all of your pay check in the bank and withdraw only what you need for spending money. This will eliminate the urge to spend the money without thinking carefully.

Build your Resume: At the end of the summer, ask your employer or supervisor for a letter of recom-mendation. This will help build your resume for the next job you apply for. Your school counselor can provide tips on writing a good resume.

Good luck to all the Nelson County teens this summer – hope it’s fun and profitable.

This house has been lovingly transformed from a “house” to a “home”! From the tree lined front yard and well landscaped entrance, to the relaxing screened porch overlooking the raised garden beds and play area in the big back yard, this transformation is evident.

More than $30,000 was recently spent on interior and exterior renovations. The kitchen has new granite countertops, tile back splash, and stainless steel appliances. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

A home inspection is a great tool to determine the condition of a home. As discussed in last month’s real estate column, the home inspec-tion protects the seller because it establishes the actual condition of the property at the time of sale, thus reducing post closing disputes regarding the property condition. It is also a great tool for prospective home purchasers because it can give reassurance that the home is struc-turally sound OR it can alert the prospective home owner of possible defects or deficiencies. Here are a few tips that can help a home buyer navigate through the home inspec-tion period.

Choose to inspect; unless you have construction expertise, you should have a home inspection. The Virginia Association of Realtors (VAR) purchase contract and inspec-tion addendum provide the buyer with an opportunity to indicate that

you desire or waive the home inspec-tion.

Get a referral; just as agents are not all created equal, neither are home inspectors. Your best option is to ask your agent, friends, or family for a referral. A satisfied customer of an inspector can be a good indicator of your future satisfaction.

Pay and get paid; Unless the home is larger than average, or you tack on additional services such as a radon test, the inspection fee will be around $300-350. Inspectors are paid at the time of service; the upfront cost is minimal when you consider that it can save you from inheriting a costly issue that even the seller may not know about.

Understand the scope; the inspection may include, but not be limited to, geotechnical inspections, inspections of the structure, founda-tion, roof, flooring, HVAC systems, electrical system, plumbing system, appliances, exterior, drainage, win-

dows, lead-based paint, radon, etc… If it is important to you, inspect it.

Meet the timeline; a 10-14 day inspection period is typical. Unless you have been granted an extension, you must abide by this time frame in terms of actually conducting the inspection and providing a repair report/request to the seller. Once the inspection period expires, the buyer’s right to ask for seller paid repairs or credits also expires.

Don’t nit-pick! Prioritize the deficiencies. Peppering the request with minor items, may upset or over-whelm the seller and hence cause the seller to overlook the items that are most important to the buyer. Focus in on repair items that could be most costly or that may compromise the health and safety of the occupants and/or structure.

Negotiate; You can ask for a repair to be made, but the seller is not under any obligation to fix it. However, if the seller is not willing

to make the repairs as requested, the buyer is able to terminate the contract OR accept the seller’s offer of repairs/ repair credit (if any) and proceed to settlement.

Choosing not to inspect; (Per the VAR purchase contract) if a buyer waives the inspection, the seller war-rants that all appliances, heating and cooling equipment, plumbing and electrical systems will be in working condition at the time of settlement. If the range works the day of settle-ment, but breaks two months later, the seller cannot be held liable.

Follow these tips and you can get a little peace of mind in knowing exactly what you are purchasing at the time of settlement.

Window Tinting will improve the living space and daily life in your home dramatically

You NEED Window Tinting and This is Why

[ improve living space ]

Clear View Window Films

Authorized Window Film DealerPrestige Dealer Network

The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you elimi-nating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright?

I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furni-ture. A great example of this would be hardwood fl oors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been fi nished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen signifi -cant fading on hardwood fl oors in less than a year.

3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making.

For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. I can make your views more vivid and drastically reduce the heat from the sun.

For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Come in and see us!There are no shortages of artists,

musicians, beer, wine, or food in Nelson County. The county is a big place so it can sometimes be hard to get to all of those things at once, but now a few local businesses are team-ing together to create a weekly, pet-friendly, music- and art-fi lled event that is fun for the whole family.

Sundays ‘Til Sundown is present-ed by local B&B The Mark Addy Inn and local band The Design. Jacob Tal’s the drummer.

“It’s nice to bring everyone to one common ground once a week,” he said. “We’re trying to keep Nelson County bands and artists so people can come see what their county has

to offer.”The weekly summertime event

begins June 5 and features hometown celebrities Sally Rose and Eli Cook. In addition to the musicians, food, bever-age, and art vendors will all be present under the new event tent at the Mark Addy Inn in Nellysford.

Art vendors feature potters and jewelers. Food will be sold through the Fountain Room at the Mark Addy. Beverages will be available from Blue Mountain Brewery and Cardinal Point Winery at the June 5 event.

The Design, which plays weekly at Fellini’s #9 in Charlottesville and all over Nelson, will also be making an appearance at each event.

Sunday’s ‘Til Sundown happens each week from 2 to 7 p.m. and continues June 12 with Chamomile & Whiskey and Jamal Milner and Houston Ross. Other musicians tentatively include The Astronomers, John Howard, Lord Nelson, Tara Mills, The Mud Farmers, Robert Peters, Downbeat Project, Julius Hangman, Soul Transit and many more.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. They are available at The Mark Addy, Blue Mountain Brewery, Cardinal Point Vineyard, and Fellini’s #9. Call 434-361-1101 or visit Mark-Addy.com for informa-tion and tickets. NCL

Success with Rhododendron & Azalea

If you can keep the deer at bay, rhododendron and azaleas offer two to three weeks of gorgeous color in the spring and their grace and stature in the landscape offer a ‘backbone’ to any design (FYI Rhododendron & Azalea are the same genus). They also provide the necessary elements in any native-style application – one where we attempt to re-construct the landscape as if the residence was carefully set into a place without destroying the native fauna. The problems most people have success-fully establishing these shrubs in their landscapes is largely due to is-sues with soil – both the soil brought in on the roots of the new plant and what you provide during the installa-tion process. Here is my method for success.

The most common problems with establishing this genus are due to three major factors: 1) the porous, pine bark media accompanying the plant when it is purchased, 2) a shallow root system that does not penetrate past 6 inches or so and 3) the need for acidic soil to thrive. The sum total is that the average gardener loses these plants due to a combi-nation of all three of these factors working against him. The solution lies in dealing decisively with all three – providing excellent soil prep (including pelletized sulfur for pH adjustment), watering with a mini-mum of 1-inch of irrigation a week and a complete (or majority) removal of the pine bark media that accom-panies the plant from the nursery or garden center.

I cannot stress how important soil preparation is with this genus. The addition of compost, peat moss, holly tone and gypsum blended deep into the soil strata is imperative for suc-cess. The fi nal element, elemental sulfur, is necessary in order to adjust

the pH to 5.5. Typically in a native oak forest, this is about the pH that you would start with, however your local landscaper probably moved that number to 6 or 6.5 when they in-stalled your lawn due to the applica-tion of tons of lime. Ask your local extension service about where to fi nd elemental sulfur and, as always, fol-low the label.

Pine bark media is largely chosen by the nursery industry because it is cheap, light, porous and offers ease in modifying the pH and soil nutrients. To the gardener trying to grow a rhododendron, this material can be a recipe for disaster since it is the complete opposite of what lies beneath your shovel – clay soil is heavy, tight and does not allow for quick and easy pH or soil nutrient ad-justment. The answer is the removal of this material from the plant using a garden hose before planting. With a gentle but fi rm spray, move the plant around on the ground while directing the fl ow on the foot system thereby effectively removing the majority of this pine bark. Your shrub is now ready for planting.

Now that your soil is prepared and your rhododendron has very little pine bark on the roots, dig your hole and install. Use a lot of water and careful soil placement to ensure good ground/root contact while focusing on planting relatively high. Be careful because heavy watering during the installation process can create a ‘soup’ of amended soil going around the roots of the plant. You want to make sure your soil is in good contact with the roots or pockets will end up dry-ing up the plant and lead to eventual death. Finally, mulch with pine straw or composted hardwood mulch to retain moisture during the heat of summer and cold of winter. Remem-ber, water, water, water (even in the cold of winter) as these guys are NOT going to go deep in search of it.

Diabetes, Part 2Most people have heard of diabetes

(diabetes mellitus type 2 is what we are discussing here), the disease where the body does not handle sugar well. It causes nerve damage, kidney and vision problems, and most dangerously heart attacks and strokes. Scary busi-ness. But, have you heard of predia-betes?

Our bodies have a really great system for keeping the amount of sugar in our blood (called “blood sugar”) in a normal range. Since just about all the food we eat gets turned into sugar, that is obviously a very important thing! Sugars between 70 and 99 are normal. Any sugars above that really aren’t nor-mal. If they run from 100-125 fasting (after not having eaten for 8 hours) that is called prediabetes. Fasting sugars above 125 are diagnostic of diabetes.

If you are prediabetic, then you are at risk of developing diabetes. Although the risks of heart disease and stroke are higher, the good news is that with lifestyle changes you can help stave off diabetes and its many complications. Weight loss is prob-ably the single biggest factor in turning

prediabetes around. A 5-10% weight loss can be enough to bring the sugars back down to a normal state. Exer-cise, too, is a big help. 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily can cut the risk for the disease (bigger muscles burn sugar better, exercise helps you lose weight). There is evidence that smok-ing increases your risk for diabetes, so stopping that can help too.

So how do you know if you have to worry about getting diabetes? Certain-ly if you have a family history of it and are overweight, it would be smart to get checked by your doctor. If you have to urinate a lot or are always thirsty, are overly tired all the time, have blurry vi-sion, or have burning and numbness in your feet, you also ought to be checked for diabetes. If you don’t have any of this but are overweight, now is the time to make changes to turn this around, before your sugar rises.

Recovery Time Often, fitness clients speed through

the weight training and may skip the rest or recovery period between sets while lifting weights. Most individu-als wish to get the workout over and some folks have a busy schedule. At any rate, the recovery period between sets of weight lifting is important.

The recovery period is valuable because it allows the muscle fibers a chance to rest after they have been challenged. Often I hear, “the first set of 12 repetitions was easy but I can only make to number six on the second set.” This is an indication that the muscles did not rest adequately between sets. Another observation when the muscles are not adequately rested is that the technique falters and the client unconsciously brings in other muscles to complete the task. When that occurs, there is not isolation or recruitment of the desired muscle group. Enjoying the recovery period also helps to prevent muscles strains in the gym.

How much time should you allow? The duration of time will vary from

person to person depending on your fitness level and what you are trying achieve. It also depends on how much weight you are lifting. Obvi-ously, the heavier the weight, the longer rest you may wish to take. For some individuals, it may be 20- 30 seconds, for others it could be 1-2 minutes between sets.

For those who don’t have the luxury of spending all their time in the gym, rotating your exercises can speed up the workout. This used to be very popular with circuit weight training systems. An individual would lift one set at each station and then repeat the circuit, 2-3 times. It allows each muscle group a chance to rest while another one is challenged. This same routine can be used while lifting dumbbells, using elastic bands, doing pushups or abdominal work. Stretching during your re-covery time is also beneficial for the muscles. Choose a different stretch while resting between sets.

So, breathe and take a rest, it will help build stronger muscles and prevent injuries.

As anyone who has ever set foot in Nelson County can tell you: it’s a big county but sometimes you have to travel far and wide to see a friend from way back when. But every once in a while there are a few county-wide events that bring everyone to-gether to reminisce about childhood, high school, or growing up.

The Carnival of the Massies Mill Ruritan Club is one of those events.

“People come back every year; it’s very well-attended,” said Bob Wood, a fairly new member of the Ruritan Club who runs the organization’s website. “It’s kind of a big event locally. Lots of people come every year and they talk about it as being kind of a reunion because that’s where they see their old high school classmates.”

The carnival is more than just a carnival to many of the people who have been attending since the event began in the 1950s.

“It provides an opportunity for families where they can take younger children,” said Dave. “It’s local and easy to get to.”

Not to mention a great deal cheap-er than some of the large amusement parks within driving distance.

The carnival was started as a joing venture between the Piney River Fire Department and the Massies

Mill Ruritan club in the 1950s. In the 1970s, the Ruritan Club bought a large piece of land and the building they currently still own and “inher-ited” the carnival, according to Dave.

And while he said it is a great source of entertainment and a great place to meet up with old friends, the main purpose of the carnival is a fundraiser.

“This is the primary fundraiser for our organization every year,” said Dave, who has been active with the Massies Mill Ruritan Club for about a decade now. “This is the primary source of income, which, of course, the Ruritan Club spins around and gives back into the community. Every year we end up giving $10,000 to the community.”

Entry to the carnival is free, but the costs of rides vary – depending on how many a person wants to do. A “Ride All Night” ticket is available for kids of all ages, but Dave said many of the rides are most popular for the under-10 crowd. In addition to rides, there are games (including the most-popular Bingo!), refreshments, and just a lot of good, old-fashioned carnival fun.

This year’s carnival is from 6 to 10 p.m. July 6 to 8 (Wed. – Fri.) and from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 9 at the Massies Mill Ruritan Club grounds.

LESSONS FROM THE

MountainNew books from Mary McDonough and Earl Hamner delight The Waltons’ loyal fans

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMSPHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

Page 35: Nelson County Life, Issue #75

JUNE 011 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 5

Many Nelsonians (and, to be fair, many Ameri-cans) of a certain age (and, to be inclusive, of pretty much all ages) grew up learning important life les-sons from watching The Waltons on television.

Mary McDonough grew up learning those same important life lessons from being a Walton on television. Erin Walton, to be specific.

“I’ll always be a Walton,” said the former child star who is still a prominent actress and now a published author of Lessons from the Mountain: What I learned from Erin Walton. “That’s why I wrote [the book]. There are so many loyal fans and I wanted to share with them all of the lovely memories and the lovely behind-the-scenes antics. And the other reason is the lessons I have learned.”

Mary said she has had a lot of ups and downs in her life and she believes it is important to share that with her readers.

“I look back and come full circle and I’ve come all the way back to the mountain,” she said.

Both literally and figuratively, it turns out.Though she lives in California with her family

and never visited the mountain upon which The Waltons was based until the early ‘90s, Mary now frequently visits Virginia. She was recently at the Walton’s Mountain Country Store right here in

Nelson for a book signing and last year, she starred in Lake Effects, a movie filmed at Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke.

“I love it,” said Mary of her fictional home state. “Especially in the fall.”

Her book-signing in Schuyler was May 14 at the Walton’s Mountain Country Store, which is owned by Dave Pounds, who said he’s loved Mary’s book since he read the galley copy.

“The fans have something wonderful and new to enjoy,” he said. “Anyone who reads Mary’s books is in for a pleasant surprise – in a good way!.”

Hometown hero Earl Hamner (creator and narra-tor of the award-winning, long-running series) also lives in California now, but he, too, tries to make it back to Virginia at least twice a year.

“Once when the leaves are turning and once when the dogwoods are blooming,” said Earl, who also just published a book. And though it is not Walton-related, the idea for both stories started in France. Odette, A Goose of Toulouse is a children’s book about a gosling who finds her singing voices.

The story of The Waltons started out as a story of Earl’s family on Spencer’s Mountain that he worked on while in France as a soldier.

“I started looking back over my life and over my

family and over the things that I held dear,” said Earl. “I guess wartime does that to you. I began thinking about my family and realized they were unique and loving and worthy of attention.”

And it turns out they were more worthy than anyone else gave them credit for. It was a surprise to Earl (and the actors) that The Waltons lasted as long as it did.

“The going quote was ‘Who wants to watch a poor family living in the back woods of Virginia with 8 children?’”

Turns out, quite a few.Mary went to a cattle call for redheads when she

was 9 years old and became a Walton for life. Her castmates became family and all of them were at her first book signing last month in California.

Earl, who wasn’t able to attend, wrote the for-ward for the book.

“He said he wouldn’t write the forward unless he actually liked the book,” said Mary. Of “Uncle” Earl. “But he loved it and he wrote it!”

And Earl said he was more than happy to write it.

“She did a marvelous job,” he said of Mary, whose Erin character was based on his sister Au-drey. “It’s a good story.” NCL

A long line of fans patiently snaked its way through The Walton’s Mountain Country Store for a recent book signing of Mary McDonough’s Lessons from the Mountain: What I learned from Erin Walton.

Creator of The Waltons, Earl Hamner of Schuyler, has just released a new children’s book, Odette, A Goose of Toulouse. Though Hamner wasn’t able to join Mary at her book signing, he did write the book’s forward,
