16 fathersNot all of them looked like this.Lynn Coffey’s did.

Put down your copy of 50 Shades of Hunger Games and flash back to a 1968 classic: Ramona the Pest.

Peyton has curls. Boing-boing curls. Susan had boing-boing curls. And all Ramona Quimby ever want-ed to do was pull them and watch them go boing! like a spring.

Adam and Ramona share a kindred spirit.

Ramona would get in trouble even before the boing, which as you might imagine, was incredibly frustrating for her. That’s because teachers are said to have eyes in the backs of their head. With Peyton’s backward facing car seat, the eyes I might have on any of my multiple heads are of no use when Adam leans over, ever so quietly, and grabs a curl.

Then, the shriek. And the tears. Dear Lord, the tears.

They’re enough to make you pull abruptly off on the side of the road, after a full day having ostrich, zebras and camels stick their hungry heads in your car windows at a nearby sa-fari park. After kissing away Peyton’s salty tears, I look at Adam with a serious look on my face. He answers back by looking down and hiding his eyes behind his bangs, only to peer back up with a mischievous grin.

No sir, we don’t pull hair.Would you pluck the feathers off

an ostrich? No, you wouldn’t.Would you play bongo drums on

the humps of a camel? Bad idea.Would you peel the stripes off a

zebra and expose its nudity to the world? Absolutely not.

So please, my love, do not pull your sister’s hair. It hurts, especially when you end up with some of it in your hands. Maybe one day, if you ask nicely, Peyton will let you gently pull one of her curls so you can release its stored kinetic energy and have it go boing!

Now go play with Henry Huggins and smash up some bricks.

Enjoy!Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Fruit and Root,When Wine Tastes Best

Flower, fruit, leaf and root…these are the designated symbols or phases in the biodynamic calendar. Without wristwatches, out ancient ancestors kept track of time by the sun, moon and stars, planting and harvesting in rhythm with nature. More recently, biodynamic farmers have been plant-ing with the phases of the moon. Sowing seeds after a new moon and harvesting on ‘root’ days, and whether you buy into the theory, planting your own seeds with the new moon, or believe it’s all a bunch of hierarchical hooey, the holistic approach that looks beyond the vine and its profit to the land, even the cosmos, is a concept of interconnectedness and respect, encouraging biodiversity and working with nature not against it, that agri-business could well heed and follow. How the world would change.

But what about tasting wine to the phases of the lunar calendar? That’s what two major supermarkets in the UK, Tesco and Marks & Spencer, have been doing for some years. The

biodynamic calendar is similar to the synodic cycle, the waxing and waning of the moon, and if we understand that the moon controls not only the oceans’ tides but human biology and the way plants grow, it makes sense that wine, a living organism, is affected too.

In their book/calendar, When Wine Tastes Best, Maria and Matthias Thun explain that each constellation is asso-ciated with one of the four elements: earth, air, fire or water. Each of these elements influences a different part of the plant: the earth element affects the plant’s roots; water, its leaves; air, its flowers, and fire, its fruit. The idea when tasting is that wine is best on flower and fruit days. It’s not that you shouldn’t drink wine on leaf or root days, but that it may not be at peak deliciousness. Whether you believe the theory behind this, matters little; once we all believed the sun revolved around the earth. Try it and see. In June, flower and fruit days: Sat 2, Sun 10, Fri 15, Wed 20, Thurs 21 until 6pm, Sun 24, Mon 25.

In the end, what is perhaps most magical about wine is that it’s alive. Grown from grapes upon vine, it

continues to evolve in the bottle. Even once opened, wine changes and evolves in the glass. Compare with a can of soda, which begins to die the moment its tab is popped. Then too, other factors shape how much you will enjoy a wine: the weather, your mood, emotions, surroundings and perhaps most of all, the person with whom you’re sharing the wine.

We at Basics believe the following taste good no matter what fruity day it is.

La Bastide St. Dominique, Jules Rochebonne, 2010 – This Côtes du Rhône tastes more like a CDP. Big and smooth, with notes of tobacco and black plum. $19 Domaine Grand Veneur, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieilles Vignes, 2010 – Blackberry and blue-berry fruit intertwined with licorice and truffle notes. Sensational richness and intensity make this one of the most concentrated wines of the appel-lation. 95-99 pts. Wine Advocate. $99

Need a wooden flute made by these men? Get in line.

Olwell Handmade Flutes in Massies Mill has no website. They don’t place ads, and they have no color brochure. They’re not on Facebook and they don’t Tweet or blog. #really

But you’d still be hard-pressed to find someone interested in wooden flutes who hasn’t heard of Patrick Olwell and his son, Aaron.

Once upon a time, Patrick – who has been making these wooden flutes (primarily used in playing Irish music) since the mid-1970s – used to travel from craft show to music festival ped-dling his one-of-a-kind, custom-made instruments. But now, even though he’s not online, his customers are.

“Because of the internet and everyone talking to each other, people are actually recommending me to each other,” he said, adding that his customers are now much more informed than they used to be. “Before the internet, our advertising campaign was a handful of musicians. Once the internet kicked in, people could communicate with one another.”

And they certainly have been talking – the minimum time on the waiting list for one of Patrick’s flutes is 1 year, but the wait can be up to 7 years – depending on how elaborate the flute is.

Back in 1976, Patrick moved to Nelson from Massachusetts (primarily for the climate, he says) as a recent college grad – he’d studied English and Chinese, but he was a musician at heart.

“I’d been playing since I was a kid,” he said – before flute, piano and guitar. But in college, the wooden flute really struck his fancy. “I was interested in playing instruments, but they didn’t exist for sale or if they were available, they were really expensive. At the time I was a college student with no money and I was a folk musician, so I got into ethnic music and I got obsessed with play-ing what is so-called the Irish Flute.”

Patrick knew that if he was having trouble finding quality-made instruments, other wooden flute enthusiasts must be, too.

Page 11: Nelson County Life, Issue #87

“When I started this, no one was making them,” he said, adding that many large instrument manufacturers like Yama-ha now make wooden flutes that range in price from $7,000 to $10,000 for wooden flute enthusiasts like himself.

And to those enthusiasts, the 1- to 7-year waiting period is worth the wait.

Though he sometimes uses local boxwood if it’s available, the wood Patrick uses is primarily African Blackwood – the same material that most high-quality oboes and clarinets are made out of, which can take 3 to 7 years to season.

“We’re hand-making instruments and we’re unwilling to adopt production practices that will lower the quality,” said Patrick. “It’s a challenge to make serious instruments and make them quickly – each piece of wood is unique.”

Protect your Interiors from Fading – Substantial Solar Heat Reduction – Literally make your Views more Crisp and the Outdoor Colors more Vibrant

Letting in the summer light

Clear View Window Films

The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your gorgeous summer views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them cov-ered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright?

I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furni-ture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen signifi-cant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year.

3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant summer views.

For those of you without blinds, I can take care of ev-erything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of budding trees 0, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat.

For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Aaron Olwell, one of Patrick’s sons, said that the challenge of creating the wooden flute is one thing that drew him to working with his dad, despite the challenges of working in a family busi-ness.

“Basically, my dad would give me the end result – a flute that looked and played as well as his, but within that, I was free to fig-ure out the process – as long as it didn’t have bad consequences,” said Aaron. “I had the freedom to invent processes.”

To the Olwell’s, making these flutes is a family business, but it’s not about the money for these musicians – it’s truly about the music.

“Not that we’re opposed to making money; we think money’s great, but if you want to make really great musical instruments – not just great, but the best – you might have to fuss over it for a while,” said Patrick. “My son and I are both musicians so we relate to what we make as musicians. It has that extra something in it because we fussed.” NCL

He died as he lived; quiet and easy, without a lot of fanfare. After a long struggle, he just closed his eyes and went to sleep. It’s the kind of passing he would have wanted for himself and what each person desires for someone they love.

Andrew Segedi is the man who gave me life and taught me how to live it, fully. It had nothing to do with material possessions since our family didn’t have an abundance of worldly goods. It was a richness of heart and good humor that he passed down to his daughter which has sustained me through the trials of life.

Daddy never was a traveling man, preferring to stay close to home. That quality must have rubbed off on me since I, too, am a confirmed stay-at-home. But that’s not to say he wasn’t always on the move, active and alive with new ideas. He was a tinkerer of things and had a great imagination, coming up with all sorts of inventive projects. He’d wake us up in the middle of the night with some hair-brained idea that never really took off but generated a great deal of enthusiasm in the process. I thought he hung the moon!

Physically, I got his short stature, button nose and skinny legs. On the plus end I inherited his athletic ability, the Segedi ESP and the off-the-wall humor our whole family seems to possess. For instance: each year at Christmas he’d erect a huge tree in the front yard, made of hundreds of lights all the same color except one. Then he’d sit on our porch and wait for the inevitable comment from a passerby, pointing out the error. The dialog was always the same; “Mr. Segedi, do you know there is a red bulb in with all the green ones?” To which he’d reply, “Yes”. Nothing more, just, “yes.” It really got to them, knowing they had taken his bait and ended up in the trap.

In 1976 he was the rage of our neighborhood when he painted,

freehand, the Bennington flag on our roof in honor of the Bicentennial. People flying small aircraft buzzed our house for a better look at the bright red, white and blue flag adorning the roof.

By trade, Daddy was a steel worker when we lived in Ohio. When he got tired of shoveling snow, he moved us to south Florida where he became a Borden milkman and, later, a middle aged entrepreneur who started his own roof painting business that he retired from.

He was the first person I ever knew who actively practiced “random acts of kindness,” giving stranded motorists a couple of gallons of gas, telling them to pay it forward. He purposely gave low estimates on work done for older folks whom he knew didn’t have money for the job.

He taught me how to ride a bicycle and drive a stick shift car. He took me to church every Sunday. He painted 50 yard dash markers on our street when I was running high school track and timed me with a stopwatch. He played catch and kicked a football endlessly with his tomboy daughter and never complained that I wore Levi’s instead of frilly dresses. When thunderstorms scared me as a child, he’d hold me on his lap on the porch swing and show me that lightning and thunder was just a spectacular light show from God and nothing to be afraid of. To this day I still love a good thunderstorm! He’s the man who taught me to fish. At four years of age I remember being with him in a small boat on Lake Erie, hauling in the perch.

Growing up, every December Daddy drove my mom and me around to look at the Christmas lights. I was always in the back seat perched between them, ohhing and ahhing over the decorations. As an adult, one year I went back home for the holidays and although at the time my dad was very ill, I talked him into driving us to see the lights like he did when I was a little girl. As usual, I was perched on the back seat, head between them. As we drove down familiar streets, an emotional memory welled up suddenly and in that instant I was twelve years old again, riding along with my parents. A large lump formed in my throat and I had to sit back in the seat so they wouldn’t see the hot tears stream-ing down my face. As it turned out, it was the last Christmas we’d spend together so that moment will always be treasured.

When he died, my mother asked if there was anything of his I wanted. I chose his high school athletic medals, the wooden carpenter’s toolbox containing all his hand tools, his old green tackle box and a flannel shirt I had given him that still had his scent lingering on it. I have them still.

We buried him alongside my baby sister, high on a hill overlook-ing the small Pennsylvania town where he was born and raised. It was autumn; the trees were in full color and the crispness in the air told of the changing seasons. I drove back to Virginia bereft, with an emptiness inside so great I thought I’d never recover. But time passes, smoothing off the rough edges of grief until all that’s left are the tender memories. By the world’s standards Andy Segedi was an ordinary man but to the girl who looked up to him, he was a giant

I am much older now and realize what a special gift my father gave me throughout his life; the precious gift of his time. That’s what all children want, you see. Not the big ticket items money can buy but the very thing it can’t.... a father’s caring heart. NCL

You may have noticed the state and national historic landmark, formerly known as the Spruce Creek Gallery, is undergoing some interior renovations.

On June 16, 2012, the building will be unveiled as the Rockfish Valley Foundation’s Natural History Center. Its recent affiliation with Virginia Museum of Natural History creates a partnership aimed at providing shared exhibits and programs.

The grand opening will include an exhibit based on “Living off the Land” and will display a large collection of taxidermied native wildlife, animal skeletons, rocks and insects. Also on display will be a genuine dugout canoe which will double as a photo opp. for visitors.

According to Rockfish Valley Foundation president Peter Agelas-to, the mission behind the center is to preserve the resources of the Rockfish Valley. “We believe Nelson County is the right place for this program, with our abundant natural resources on the east side of the Blue Ridge and our rural cultural heritage,” Agelasto said, in a release. Have you hadTHE TALK withyour parents?

Planning for thefuture is important,

don’t wait… Call today for a

free consultation.

Father’s Day ChatThe month of June brings us Fa-

ther’s Day – that challenging holiday that sends us rushing to the greeting card racks or the gadget store, know-ing full well that whatever material item that you can find has little mean-ing to either of you.

What most Dads around the world much prefer is a visit or a phone call. As sons and daughters, we often find it a challenge to make those visits or phone calls to our own parents.

Even more challenging than choosing that card, is having “The Talk” with your parents. No, not the one that they were supposed to have with you before you reached high school. The Talk to have now is about life planning issues.

The Talk will vary depending upon your family’s financial situation as well as the family dynamics. But your parents should each have the following documents in place – at least by age 65:

• A will to specify beneficiaries and to appoint an executor to handle estate matters.

• An advance medical directive to

indicate preferred medical treatments. This document might also appoint a trusted friend or family member to participate in health care decisions and receive medical information.

• A financial power of attorney. This allows a trusted family member or friend to handle financial matters in the event of a temporary or perma-nent disability.

These documents should be re-viewed every 5 years or whenever a significant change has occurred in the family’s situation. Those individuals with more complex family situations or with significant assets will likely need to have one or more trusts in place as well.

Your parents may not wish you to know the details of these documents at this time – that’s okay – you just need to know where they can be found. Their primary care physician should have a copy of any medical directives and perhaps their attorney can main-tain their other legal documents.

If your parents also own a small business or rental property, The Talk should include plans for transition-

ing the management of the business. While many families are able to successfully transition businesses to future generations, most do not. It is often far wiser to consider an orderly sale of these assets.

By age 75, The Talk should also include discussions about future living arrangements. Is their current home suitable for their long-term needs or can it be made so with some renovations? If not, now is the time to discuss relocation plans. Allow at least one year for preparing a home for sale and making moving arrange-ments. Making these decisions at a relatively early age will allow your parents the opportunity to participate in all decisions and will significantly improve their ability to enjoy their new home.

Just like The Talk of many years ago, there is no easy script to follow. The important thing is to start the conversation. Make each visit an opportunity to have a few minutes to discuss the issues – over time, the conversation will become easier for both of you.

Play Ball!Negotiating a lowball offer

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You really can’t blame a buyer for trying. It could be said that you will never know what could have been if you don’t at least try. It’s true. In this day and age, it is not uncommon for buyers to submit a lowball offer simply because they can. However, some of these buyers may get smacked in the forehead with reality. A well priced home, one priced “to sell, not sit,” can sell very close to asking price, and even in this market, an appropriately priced home has been known to sell above the asking price in a compet-ing situation. The key is for buyers and sellers to understand the market (specific to the subject home!), so that selling decisions can be realisti-cally guided by actual market data. If you are a player in this real estate market, here is some advice on how to play ball … how to stay in the game when making and negotiating a lowball offer.

Buying Tips: Calculate market value; Just

because it is a buyer’s market, it does not mean that sellers will accept an offer that is less than actual market value. Have your agent provide a market analysis. If the house has sat on the market for a long time, is overpriced, and/or is not in ideal condition, than a low offer may be justified. On the flip side, if you have found your dream home and it’s priced appropriately, you may not want to go in low and jeopardize losing it.

Determine motivation; home sellers are often more willing to ac-cept a low offer when they have good reason, i.e., job relocation, financial pressures from the lender (short sale or pending foreclosure), or multiple mortgages. Look for clues in agent comments or ads such as “must sell”, “sellers motivated,” “make any offer,” or “sellers will consider all offers.” Don’t misinterpret these signals; sell-

ers still have the option of accepting, countering, or flat out rejecting.

Write a clean offer; don’t clutter the contract with contingencies. If you must first sell a house, then don’t expect the seller to accept a low offer and have a delayed closing. Appear strong, qualified, and ready to close within a matter of weeks.

Consider alternate cost- saving tactics; Instead of a price reduction, ask for seller paid concessions such as closing cost credits, renovation or repair credits, or tangible goods such as furniture and appliances.

Selling Tips:Don’t kill the deal; Overcome the

initial temptation to reject the offer. Identify the strong points of the offer and reflect on the basis of the offer. Is the house priced appropriately? Does it need updating or repairs? Counter the offer. Homebuyers often make lowball offers in anticipation of further negotiations. Determine other

buyer hot-buttons and negotiate those such as seller paid closing costs, settlement date, or owner financing.

Adjust your plan; Be realistic – adjust your expectations within current market parameters; don’t let a good opportunity pass you by because you don’t know when/if the next ready, willing, and able buyer may surface. If you are unable to reach an agreement and are not in a position of having to sell, wait for a fair market offer or consider selling later when the market favors sellers.

When a low offer is negotiated to a point of agreement, a win-win out-come is achieved. Sellers can “move on” while buyers “move in”!

(Mole + Vole) Vs. ManGardeners often misdiagnose what

is happening in their landscape and what critter or factor is ultimately responsible for poor plant health or even death and lawn tunneling. Of the two creatures this article title mentions, the mole, is relatively easy to get rid of while the other, the vole, is a bit more difficult. ‘Methods to the madness’ (and I mean MAD-NESS) of ridding your landscape of these varmints can be some simple, methodical steps or, in the case of the movie Caddy Shack, mutually assured destruction.

Moles are tunneling, underground carnivores feeding on grub worms or Japanese beetle larvae that live beneath the ground. Each year, as the grub worms move into the upper 2-4 inches of soil to feed on your fescue, the moles move in and begin their network of tunnels to feed on them. Although their damage is more immediately vis-ible, the mole itself should never be the target of your arsenal – instead simply go after their food source, the grub worms. During the months of July and early August, grub worm activity on your lawn is at its peak and it is during this time that they are easily destroyed an application of an insecticide ‘Imidacloprid’. Sold under a variety of names (Merit, Advantage, Admire), this insecticide, applied as a granule, is dissolved by water and then taken up by the plant. When grub worms feed on the roots of plants treated with Imidacloprid, they will die a long and painful death (no, it is quite fast – I just like the thought of it being a l-o-n-g and painful death!).

Don’t I wish there was a ‘silver bullet’ for our next arch enemy, the vole. Unlike the mole, there are a number of kinds of voles and they are largely vegetarians – consisting of an extensive diet of orchard and land-scape plants. Largely all you will see are small, quarter-sized holes at the base of your favorite plant. Damage

is often detected too late and you are left with just remnants of what you purchased at the garden center with little to no roots left to sustain it – death is imminent.

There are a number of methods available to control voles by using bait or sulfur gas to kill the rodent. When using baiting stations, home-owners can purchase rodenticides that are largely anticoagulants that kill the vole over a period of succes-sive feedings on the chemical. Since the chemical acts slowly, the vole doesn’t become ‘shy’ to the material and death is within a number of days. These baiting stations are in random areas around the landscape and are protected by a large rock, a shingle or any other water proof material so as to allow the chemical to largely stay in a dry, accessible area for extended feeding by the vole but inaccessible to pets. Baiting has been going on in orchards for years and is largely the best known way to target the vole and eliminate the problem. Caution should be practiced to be sure that the chemical is out of reach of pets (contact your local extension service for more information).

Personally I employ the second approach – lighting small bombs that emit a sulfur gas and shoving them into the hole and covering the hole to concentrate the gas. Once the bomb is lit and put into their hole, a toxic sulfur gas is emitted and fills all holes where the vole is living and eating. Usually, after putting a bomb in one hole, you will find a number of other holes by watching for the escaping gas. All holes must be covered so that the gas is concentrated within the network of tunnels that they have underground. Not sure how this at-tributes to Gore’s ‘global warming’ but it does allow me to light a bomb (fun) and kill one of my arch enemies (more fun). Now if they only had one for deer ...

Discover why people trust Afton Family Medicine

By Dr. Steve SchmitzAfton Family Medicine

Dear Dr. Steve,Ever since I sprained my ankle

last year I have a tendency to turn it while doing even simple things like walking. What can I do?

The pesky sprained ankle-- what a familiar, but hated, injury to any-one who has played sports, hiked, or even chased the dog across the yard. One minute you are running, taking for granted that your feet and ankles will hold you up and then BAM! Down you go with a turned ankle.

Sometimes when this happens there might not be any swelling, or maybe just a little, but generally you can get up and put weight on the ankle. Usually in these situa-tions the RICE treatment is all you need. No, don’t put Chinese food on your ankle, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate it.

If you really swell, so your ankle starts to look like a softball, or if you can’t walk on it, or if it just hurts like mad, you probably ought to see your doctor for further treat-ment.

Either way, doctor or not, it is extremely important to retrain your ankle to work correctly after an injury like this. When an ankle is sprained, the ligaments that hold it together get all stretched out. So, the ankle is loose, and easier to turn again. Also, the nerves in the area get hurt, so they don’t accurately tell your brain where your foot is. What chaos!

To get everything back on track, you must do careful stretching of the Achilles tendon (the big one running from the heel to the calf), and range of motion exercises with the foot. I tell people to draw the alphabet in the air with their toes, keeping their leg still.

So, enjoy all your foot driven activities and remember to appreci-ate your ankles!

All Nia participants are supported by the focus of each class on aware-ness of sensation in the body and presence in the moment. The ultimate goal of a Nia class is to increase the pleasure of living in one’s body.

One of the foundation principles of Nia is The Joy of Movement. It is one of the aspects of Nia that brings people back to classes over and over again and helps them to develop a regular fitness / wellness routine.

32 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 2012

In the early days of Virginia history, hard apple cider played a big role.

Brian Shanks – master cidermaker at Bold Rock Cidery – says that cider may have gotten lost in history, but he’s excited about helping lead the resurgence.

“It was part of the social fabric,” said Brian, who hails from New Zealand but has fallen in love with Virginia, and Nelson in particu-lar. “I guess what we’re doing now is recognizing this resurging cider and the global phenomenon, but we’re trying to put a more contemporary twist on some of this.”

Brian, who has been working in the cider industry for years and is considered a leader in the field, and his partner, John Washburn (or Johnny Applecider), will start distributing their two brands of cider – the more traditional Crimson Rich, and the more modern Bold Rock – later this month.

They don’t want to give too much away about the flavors, but hope to start tastings and tours shortly after distribution tastings at one of the two barns they built on their property in Nellysford and eventu-ally work their way up to a state-of-the-art cidery and cider pub.

Arthur Wells, facilities manager at Bold Rock Cidery, stirs a vat of apple juice before it is fermented.

Page 33: Nelson County Life, Issue #87

JUNE 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 33

As the newest members of the Nelson wine and beer circuit, John and Brian said they could not have picked a better place to start their cidery.

“Well, from a commercial point of view, cider-ies tend to do well where wineries and microbrew-eries proliferate,” said John (who claims he read that in Microbreweries for Dummies).

John said he acknowledges that, of course, there’s a commercial aspect to Bold Rock, but says the venture has a lot of heart going into it, as well. He said he plans for the cidery to be local and green – it has an orchard on the property, and they reused the wood that needed to be felled for construction of the cidery. Most of all, Bold Rock is proud to be making Virginia cider out of Virginia apples – and to be part of the Nelson craft community.

“It’s a time in history when people are looking for flavor and also looking for local flavor… it’s local, local, local and it’s flavor, flavor, flavor.”

“The wineries and breweries here have been so successful and I think what we’re doing is adding a little bit of extra flavor with something just a little bit different,” added Brian. “The beautiful part of it is we do all work together and I think the sum of all of us is greater than any one individual – the more of us there are, and the better

we do, the better it is for the district.”John said he is proud to be part of the

identity of craft beverage makers in Nel-son.

“When we talk about flavor, we talk about how it’s bold,” he said.

And, as they say – “Fortune Favors the Bold.” NCL

John Washburn and Brian Shanks sample a taste of apple juice fresh from being crushed and filtered.

ANTIQUESAntique Farmhouse PINE DINING ROOM TABLE SET + 6 Maple Chairs I’ve absolutely loved this table and the maple Windsor style chairs are quite comfy. It measures 30” high by 81” long by 31” wide. I even have a couple of tablecloths that I’ll throw in. The antique dealer I got it from had said it came from a farm house in England in the 1920s. I have removed and then put a fresh coat of furniture wax on it every few years. The chairs are solid maple and are so strong. Pics on Craigslist.
