• Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918.
• He was born in a place in South Africa called Mvezo.
• When Mandela was growing up his father was leader of the Thembu tribe.
• At the age of seven he walked over the hills to a small shack for black children
• There Mandela got his English name Nelson.

• The new chief of the Thembu tribe decided to adopt Nelson Mandela.
Growing up
• When Nelson was 16 he was sent to boarding school.
• After a while he went to University.
• He was then told to leave University.
The law practice
• Nelson Mandela set up a law practice with a man called Oliver Tambo to help the poor black South Africans.
• He joined a politicial party called the African National Congress.
• The South Africans wanted to start a peaceful protest against the white people but when that didnt work they had to form violent forms of protest.
Mandela gets arrested
• Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and was accused of opposing the government and sabotage.
• Two years later he was sentenced to life in prison.
• In Robben Island he got the prisoner number 46664.
• Mandela was only aloud two visits per year.
Mandela becomes South Africa president
• In 1994 Mandela becomes South Africas first black president.
