NELSON MANDEL A METROPOLITAN UNIVERSIT Y
For International Students
CUTTING-EDGE KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUR TOMORROWUNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS
b
It’s a unique situation we find ourselves in at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
We’re connected!
We’re connected
We’re connected...
To the natural environment - located in a nature reserve and on the edge of a Bay with magnificent beaches and rich marine resources. The Bay guarantees a quality of life second to none while providing us with a gateway to the world.
1
We’re connected!
We are also increasingly connected to the world, with more than 10% of our student body drawn from diverse backgrounds outside South Africa. Yet, Port Elizabeth, now incorporated into Nelson Mandela Bay, has not only all the amenities of a city but the friendly warmth and connectedness of a much smaller town.
We’re connected...
To the history of South Africa, named as we are after one of the icons of the struggle for freedom and democracy and located in a region that was the cradle of that struggle.
We’re connected...
To a city, Nelson Mandela Bay, which is home to some one million people who work in manufacturing industries specializing in motor vehicle assembly and agricultural processing, tourism and the services sector.
Some of these industries are local subsidiaries of multi-national companies and a part of our mandate is to provide highly skilled people to work in the local economy.

NMMU is the biggest tertiary institution in the Eastern Cape
Province, with some 25 000 students enrolled on six different
campuses - five in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) and
one in the beautiful city of George. The University offers a full
spectrum of career-focused, academic-oriented and professional
programmes - from diploma through to doctoral level.
Our programmes are recognised and accredited by the relevant
professional bodies locally and, in many cases, internationally.
Given the increasing appeal of our programmes to international
students, that accreditation is important, and we intend to
further increase our international connections.
Our students can already be found working around the globe.
Our teaching and research staff enjoy collegial relationships with
academics at top institutions in their fields. The University and
the surrounding communities are geared up for the increasingly
cosmopolitan nature of our campuses, and a wide range of
student services and support facilities are offered to assist
international students in every aspect of student life - from what
to study, to where to live, to finding a job after graduation.
The quality of life enjoyed at this University on the Bay is
complimented by a significantly lower cost of living against
national and international benchmarks.
Our highest priority is to promote academic excellence through varied curricula, the standard of teaching
throughout all faculties, and through innovative and applied research for social and economic development.
7
NMMU is committed to the ideal of providing our students and
scholars with a stimulating, vibrant and critical educational
experience. To provide this experience, NMMU offers world-class
and modern teaching and learning facilities, excellent lecturers and
researchers, as well as library and computer facilities. Beyond the
classroom, we also offer a diverse variety of educational support
services to support the learning and social needs of our students. We
also offer cultural, sports and recreational activities on our various
campuses in Port Elizabeth and George.
We encourage you to take full advantage of this unique opportunity
in your life to engage in all aspects of campus life, seeing this as
an integral part of your educational journey at NMMU. Our staff
and our students come from all walks of life, with many different
cultures, faiths and geographical origins, and we invite you to
form part of this multicultural and cosmopolitan community.
We celebrate our diversity, and see this as an immense source
of strength. NMMU celebrates and actively promotes not only
its cultural diversity, but also its intellectual diversity, critical and
creative thinking and knowledge as a source of ‘public good’.
We are committed to the ideal of ensuring our students are fully
equipped with all the knowledge, skills and expertise they require
to finding their way in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing
world. We want our graduates not only to ‘fit’ into society, but also
change the world to becoming a better place for all.
Prof. Derrick Swartz
Vice-Chancellor
Welcome to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University! Joining a university for the first time in one’s
life is one of the most extraordinary and once in a lifetime experiences. We invite you to embrace this wonderful experience with full gusto. Here, you will find a University that places the centrality of ideas right at the heart of everything we do.

It’s a place of excellent teaching with a vibrant community that equips students for life. Academics, students and those from the surrounding community with a stake in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, share their views on the institution.
“The Eastern Cape is home to six of South Africa’s recognised biomes and in keeping with this
theme, the NMMU has the privilege of being situated within a nature reserve. The absolute
pleasure of living and working in this gem of a campus has a lot to do with its vibrant student
community, excellent support services and committed and friendly staff, not to mention the close
proximity to the sea, as well as unspoilt and rugged mountainous terrain. With no part of the
city ever being more than twenty minutes from another, the quality of life in the ‘Friendly City’ is
unparalleled.”
– Dr Kwezi Mzilikazi, Senior Zoology lecturer.
“The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has a very close network with industry and facilitates
robust networking with business through their career fairs, bursary offerings, and inviting
guest speakers from industry to teach and speak on their various programmes. This integrates
theory with practice and forms a critical link, which makes their teaching relevant to industry
requirements.”
– Dr Amber Anderson, HR Executive, Coca-Cola Fortune.
“I decided to study at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) because it had a calm
to it. There was no hustle and bustle, and my sister had studied Health Sciences at NMMU. From
studying at the University, I’ve learnt that there is no situation that you cannot take control of and
that every obstacle is preparing you for something great.”
– Melissa de Oliveira, Swaziland.
11
“Having the opportunity to live near the beach and make friends with other international students has made my experience at NMMU unforgettable. I won’t ever forget my time here because it has been so enjoyable.”
- Study Abroad student Susi Pollard, BTU Cottbus, Germany.

“NMMU is a wonderful environment. I really took to the people, and the place, and it is now like a second home to me. I’ve learnt that hard work and being an active learner is the only way to go about studying.”
- Chris Sykes, Denmark.
“The Faculty’s commitment to supporting local development, and the fact that the NMMU is one of the truly comprehensive universities in the world, is what sets the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences apart in the market”, says Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Niekie Dorfling. He further comments
that the Faculty has also established its credibility within the broader academic community.
The academic core of the Faculty is the integration of economic science with real-world
business needs and case studies. Prof. Dorfling says, “We offer a wide range of business-
related study opportunities that vary from general formative programmes to those with a
strong career orientation. At the same time we offer programmes over the full qualification
spectrum, from undergraduate diplomas to doctoral degrees.”
The School of Accounting is regarded as one of the top accounting schools in South
Africa, evidenced by the achievement of graduates in the national professional qualifying
examinations, as well as the enthusiasm shown by national and international companies keen
to employ NMMU students. NMMU, in co-operation with the Financial Planning Institute of
Southern Africa (FPI), the professional certification body for the financial planning industry
in Southern Africa, is the first academic institution to offer a formal BCom degree in Financial
Planning, giving access to membership of the FPI. The FPI carries international recognition
by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Incorporated. The Faculty offers a wide
range of business-related study opportunities that vary from general formative programmes,
like the General BCom, to programmes with a strong career orientation, like Financial Planning,
Logistics, Marketing and Human Resource Management.
“The Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences is fully committed towards adding real value
to our students and to the broader community that we serve. It is this commitment that
drives both our search for academic and professional excellence and the provision of a client
orientated service,” says Prof. Dorfling.

“The Faculty of Education is committed to the development of passionate, engaged and
knowledgeable teachers, researchers and educational leaders, who embrace critical
thinking, a desire to serve and make a difference through excellent practices, building
communities of practice based on solid relationships and relevant research. It aims
to instil hope for the future, within an enabling institutional culture,” says Dean of
Education, Prof. Denise Zinn.
The Faculty offers a world-class curriculum, which encompasses theoretical frameworks
and much hands-on experience in local schools. South Africa is a vibrant social
laboratory and nowhere is this more apparent than in the classroom.
Teaching the teachers – with the world as the classroom! The Faculty of Education has a long and established history of teaching and training primary and secondary school teachers in the Eastern Cape Province, and to the furthest corners of South Africa. That is the basis for
the Faculty’s standing as a facility that provides world-class teaching, and its innovative practice teaching programmes for students from around the globe. The Faculty houses the School for Continuous Professional Development and the School for Initial Teacher Education.

“All programmes are accredited by the relevant professional bodies in South Africa
and, in some cases, internationally. The Faculty’s strong links with industry have led
to world-class research ranging from friction stir welding, manufacturing technology
and automotive manufacturing, to telecommunications, multimedia and construction
health and safety. We are producing highly sought after experts in the fields of civil,
electrical, industrial, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, information technology,
production management, building science, quantity surveying and construction
management,” says Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Henk de Jager.
The School of Engineering’s qualifications have gained international status due to
an initiative by the NMMU and multi-national carmaker Volkswagen’s South African
subsidiary, with the establishment of the International Chair in Automotive Engineering.
The internationalisation of academic activities ensures that the next generation of
engineers, technologists and technicians are suitably equipped for the global workplace.
The School of Information Technology also offers their students the use of a computer
laboratory exclusively designed to give them maximum practical exposure to their
subject matter and usage of up to date software.
Top academic facilities, close ties with industry, hands-on experience and sophisticated
technology combine to make graduates of the Faculty of Engineering, the Built
Environment and Information Technology highly sought after in the professional arena.
As a rapidly developing country, South Africa requires huge investment in infrastructure - for housing, the manufacturing industry, tourism and mega-events. The multi-disciplinary approach to engineering education of the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Information
Technology, ensures that NMMU engineering graduates are providing critical skills to the economy.
“I wanted to be in a very different and diverse environment that was still very laid back, and NMMU fit that description perfectly. NMMU has taught me that everyone, regardless of creed or culture, has something to bring to the table.”
- Josh Dawson, Uganda.

“I came to NMMU because I wanted to experience the best of what the Eastern Cape has to offer. In life, as a whole, whatever path you take is possible. You can achieve it all, that’s what I’ve learnt at NMMU.”
- Nangamso ‘Epic’ Mtyngizane, South Africa.
The Faculty of Health Sciences not only offers students the necessary academic skills, but also
practical skills through its high level of engagement with the healthcare sector and communities.
International students accepted into this Faculty, will be trained and equipped with skills to face
the challenges of developing prevention and health promotion strategies and the need for the
restructuring of health and welfare delivery. Students from first-world, as well as developing
countries, will gain a huge amount of practical experience from the courses in this Faculty. They
will also gain first-hand experience of the HIV/Aids epidemic gripping Southern Africa, and the
measures government and non-government organisations are taking to educate people about this
disease.
“Close ties with hospitals, clinics, community organizations and industry, ensure that students
learn experientially while they study,” says Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Raj Naidoo, reflecting the
common approach of the various departments in the Faculty, which deem practical experience as
important as theoretical learning.
With the third largest population in South Africa, healthcare for the Eastern Cape Province’s seven million residents is one of its primary focuses. A measure of
the excellent academic and practical training, which is received through the Faculty of Health Sciences, is the fact that graduates are to be found working throughout the world, especially in developed countries. If your goal is to obtain a qualification in this field, there is no better place to do it than here.

“I came to NMMU because I felt that it was a safe environment. Everybody is just so friendly and helpful and it has a great Law School. I’ve learnt from being at NMMU, that in life you’ve got to be flexible, you can’t be rigid, because you don’t know what the future holds for you.”
- Fred Ofwono, Uganda.
The Faculty of Law takes pride in its high quality education and training programmes
aimed at developing legal professionals committed to the cause of justice. Graduates
are equipped not only to find, and to apply the relevant law to the facts before them,
but also to make meaningful contributions to critical debates surrounding legal reform.
Prof. Lawack-Davids notes that NMMU law graduates enjoy an excellent reputation in
the various branches of the profession and in society.
“The programme offers our international students an opportunity to witness firsthand
the historic legal and political changes in South Africa. Our subjects reflect the impact
on our law and administrative regimes as a result of the transition our country has made
from the Apartheid era to a constitutional democracy. The modules also demonstrate
how the laws have changed since the dawn of our constitutional democracy.”
Final year students are exposed to clinical legal education in the form of Street Law, the
Law Clinic and Refugee Rights Centre.
“Our Street Law programme is a practical course, which involves group discussions,
problem-solving, critical thinking, debates, mock trials and excursions. Our international
students, together with the NMMU full-time law students, get the opportunity to
take part in exciting projects designed to involve the students in experiential learning
situations. The programme includes Human Rights Law, Human Rights Awareness and
The South African legal system is a hybrid legal system that draws together the best traditions of Roman-Dutch and English law against the background of a constitutional law framework, which is considered the best in the world. For that reason, the law programme (LLB) at the NMMU
offers huge value for international students keen to take back the South African experience of law in practice, says Dean of Law, Prof. Vivienne Lawack-Davids.

Training, which international students find very intriguing. School pupils, teachers and community groups are introduced to the South
African Constitution and the South African Bill of Rights as well as international human rights legal instruments.”
The Faculty has a newly established Refugee Rights Centre and final year students are exposed to this Centre during compulsory
sessions at the Centre, where legal advice and assistance are offered to refugees and asylum seekers and the Law Clinic, which offers
legal advice and legal assistance to indigent communities.
Law SchoolThe School is run in association with the Law Society of South Africa and offers practical legal training at postgraduate level. It enables
law graduates and candidate attorneys to make the transition from academic learning to practising law and enhances the preparation
for the Attorneys’ Admission Examination, the statutory requirement for practising as an attorney.
“We aim to produce well-rounded law graduates that would make a meaningful contribution to the legal profession and society as a
whole, both in South Africa and globally,” says Prof. Lawack-Davids.

Whether it is finding directions or printing on-campus, people are always willing to sacrifice a little of their day to help you figure something out.”
- Study Abroad student Ivy Stammer, Minnesota State University, Mankato, U.S.A.
With modern teaching and research programmes, and excellent facilities, the Faculty of Science is at the forefront in the agricultural, biological, environmental, mathematical and physical sciences, says Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Andrew Leitch. A full range of

City Information
The breeze plays lightly with your hair as you breathe in the salty air coming from the ocean. As your car proceeds over another
traffic bump, you are allowed to drive at a snail’s pace. Here, there is no honking if you drive too slow. It is an insult, however, if you drive too fast. Don’t be alarmed if you are greeted by a stranger, because Port Elizabeth is the ‘Friendly City’, and all of its residents live up to that label.

LIFE ON THE BAYWith 40 kilometres of beaches offering endless fun in the sun
to visitors, it is no surprise that Port Elizabeth is also known
as the “Watersport Capital of Africa”. Along with catching a
wave, gliding across the ocean in a speed boat or holding on
for dear life while being pulled by a speed boat, the options
are endless.
THE WINDY CITYSome sort of wind, be it a breeze or gale force, is always
blowing in Nelson Mandela Bay. But numerous days of
sunshine soon banishes the windy day from one’s mind. The
weather is ideal for having fun in the sun all year round as the
summers are warm, the winters mild and rainfall sporadic.
THE WILD SIDE OF THE BAYGame parks such as the Seaview Lion Park and the Kragga
Kamma Game Park are within the boundaries of the metro.
Here wildlife such as lions, cheetahs, giraffes and springboks
can be viewed.
Another beacon that stands proud in the heart of Port Eliza-
beth is the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. First used during the
2010 Soccer World Cup, it has now become a regular host to
various sporting events.
This city forms the centre of Nelson Mandela Bay along with Uitenhage and Despatch, two small towns on the perimeter of the Nelson Mandela Metropole. There is something special about this bay. There has to be, as it was the only metro allowed to be named after former president Nelson Mandela. His “spirit of freedom” is captured in the people of the Bay, as well as their surroundings.
