Not every family or community has access to the same opportunities and social supports. Challenges like poverty and language barriers can affect how well students do in school. Model Schools for Inner Cities is an initiative that ensures students in the inner city grow up with all the positive choices and opportunities they need to thrive. We focus on the needs of the child and by working together with students, families, community, and government agencies; we can help make a difference. We are located in the heart of Regent Park in a recently rebuilt state of the art building that is bright, beautiful, and filled with lots of amazing spaces for learning. We have a student body of just over 500 students that is incredibly diverse with over 30 different home languages represented at our school. Nelson Mandela Park PS has a dedicated staff who work their utmost to serve the needs of our school community. We are focussed on building a "Culture of Caring" at our school that addresses the social and emotional wellbeing of students, but also extends to caring about ensuring high quality teaching and learning for all of our students. LiteracyOur Literacy goals are to promote student achievement in reading,writing and oral language development through comprehensiveliteracy programming. With continual support, our emphasis will beon thinking critically as well as constructing and communicatingknowledge from a wide variety of sources.

NumeracyOur Numeracy goals are to ensure student success through the useof problem solving skills and the ability to reason and prove. Students will develop reflective practices and the ability to chooseappropriate mathematical strategies.  Students will develop theabilities to justify and communicate their thinking and ideas clearly.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Nelson Mandela Park Public School provides a wide array ofco-curricular programming geared to the varied apptitudesand interests of all our students.  These programs offerstudents an opportunity to further develop their self esteemand social skills.  Students can participate in a number ofactivities such as: sports teams; Guitar Club; Girls ComputerCoding Club; Drumming Circle; Homework Club; Girls Club;Boys 2 Men; and students can engage in leadership throughgroups like Student Council.  In conjunction with our schoolbased programming we also offer a host of programs incollaboration with local community agencies.  

What Sets Us Apart

Nelson Mandela Park PS has an incredibly rich technologyenvironment where the majority of our classes haveinteractive smartboards.  All classes have LCD projectorsthat allow teachers to connect to Web based resourcesthrough our school's wireless network.  We have anapproximate 2:1 ratio for students to high quality mobilecomputing devices such as iPads, Macbooks, andNetbooks.  We have been able to build this stellar collectionof Information Technology resources through funding fromthe TDSB Model Schools program and by working withvarious charitable organizations.

Parent and Community Engagement

At Nelson Mandela Park Public School we believe that ourcommunity must include parents, caregivers, school staff andcommunity agencies. Parents and caregivers are invited to anumber of events throughout the year to celebrate and participate intheir children’s education. Parents are also encouraged to come intothe school, volunteer and join the School Council which meetsmonthly.  We strive to have interpreters whenever needed as well asprovide translations of flyers and letters sent home. As foundingmembers of the School Community Action Alliance of Regent Parkwe continue to work with and develop strong partnerships withcommunity agencies that support children and their families inRegent Park.  Some of these partnerships include workingwith Universities and Colleges, Pathways to Education, GreenwoodCollege, Youth Empowering Parents program, and the VerityGroup.  

Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They arecommunity-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety ofopportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices. Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice,access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential. Here at the TDSB our focus is on student achievement, parent and community engagement and financialstability.
