How It All Began

Trailways Motor Inn was built in 1972. The complex was purchased by the Munro family in 1993, with the first upgrade to Trailways Motor Inn following shortly after. This upgrade moved the restaurant and bar to the location now overlooking the tidal flow of the Maitai River. Business increased steadily allowing for a second major upgrade in 2007, which was complimented with the name change to Trailways Hotel – offering a truer reflection of the property.

In 1998 the Munro family commenced building the first of three accommodation blocks located across the road from Trailways Hotel, DeLorenzo’s Studio Apartments was born – in 2008 the final block was completed. DeLorenzo’s Studio Apartments is now a 30 unit complex of 5-star selfcontained studio apartments.

In 2015 The Munro Hotel Group expanded again, purchasing The Quality Inn located on Waimea Road. A name change, along with an extensive refurbishment programme has relaunched this property to the market as The Hotel Nelson.

Combining all properties under the Munro Hotel Group we now offer a total of 155 accommodation rooms in central Nelson.

Being locally owned and operated The Munro Hotel Group support the ones who support them, from working with local business, to giving back to the community through their support, as an example regular supporters of fundraising events and weekly volunteering at The Brook Sanctuary.

Most recently they are honoured to be a sponsor of the main lounge at the new Nelson Hospice Complex. The Munro Family believe in reinvesting in all properties through on-going maintenance and upgrades to ensure that the ever changing needs of the customers are met. Munro Hotel Group currently employ over 150 staff members in Nelson.

Tasman National Park, a stunning city in Tasman Bay surrounded with beaches, mountains, and lakes. Nelson is widely known for beautiful walking tracks, a wide following for mountain bike parks and just recently The Great Taste cycling

trail. Being the geographical “Centre of New Zealand” walkers can walk the steep but short track to the top of the Botanical Hill also known as the centre of New Zealand and take in the breath-taking views overlooking Nelson City

and beyond. Having the busiest port in New Zealand it is the gateway for a region which produces forestry products, fruit and wine and is a processing base for seafood. Nelson has the the fourth busiest domestic airport in New Zealand.

Nelson is known for being the home of arts and crafts, with many art galleries and studios around the region using a range of different materials and techniques to create art - painting, sculpting, wood work and glass blowing. Nelson is also the birthplace of the world-famous World

of Wearable Arts, where Dame Suzie Moncrieff brought to life an art show where designers from all over the globe could design a garment made from just about anything to be worn on display. Several years ago, the growth in

popularity saw the Wearable Arts shows being shifted to Wellington, however lucky Nelson gets to re-live these shows every day with The World of Wearable Arts Museum being based here.
