Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in a village in the Transkei on the 18 July 1918.

Mandela's father had four wives, and thirteen children. Mandela was born to his third wife.
Rolihlahla Mandela. He was given the name Nelson when he went to school.
As a child, Mandela came into contact with racial injustice.
Like all men of the Xhosa nation, the start of his adult life was marked by the ritual of circumcision. (13 – 16 years)
He became involved in politics when he studied at South Africa's first university for black students.
The young Mandela moved to Johannesburg.

Official ANC Policy
• ANC decided to fight Apartheid by using
peaceful means.
• Strikes, demonstrations and non-co-operation.
• This was the accepted official ANC policy.
• When ANC failed to bring peaceful change, they then decided to use violent forms of political struggle.
• He was captured again and sent to life in prison.

Mandela has received more than 50 International honorary degrees from Universities.

He has been awarded with honorary citizenship to many cities in the world. Even streets and parks have been named after him worldwide.
FW De Klerk (the last white President of South Africa) started talks with Mandela and the ANC, leading to the release of Nelson in 1990 after 27 years in prison.
