A small bay lying southeast of the island of Shikoku in southern Japan is the only known spot in the world where carpet sharks gather for breeding. With help from a top shark researcher, the cameras observe the sharks for 6 months, and discover a surprising enemy that cuts open the eggs to devour the developing embryos inside.

The rainforests of Costa Rica in Central America is full of life, where over 70 species of lizards thrive. The 80-centimeter basilisk is a ferocious predator, while the iguana is herbivorous and can grow to be 2 meters. The episode features the basilisk’s ability to run across water, as well as how newly hatched iguanas live as a group to survive.

Amid the lush rainforest in Gabon, Africa, live rare monkeys with unforgettable faces. The rare sloth bear, almost never spotted in the wild, looks deceivingly cuddly. But it is fierce, feared for its long sharp claws. In Sri Lanka’s oldest national park, the cameras successfully capture the mysterious creature’s unique hunting habits as well as a mother raising her cubs.

With giant trees nurtured by rich water resources, the jungles of Borneo are home to a vast array of frog species. One, the black-spotted rock frog, can hop across water surfaces in a ninja-like manner. Males also use the webbed toes of their hind legs to court females. The cameras accompany a research team into this frog paradise.

Designated by the Japanese government as a special natural monument, Japanese serows live solitary lives hidden in the forests of rugged mountainous areas. Of the 11 species of owl in Canada’s Manitoba province, the great gray owl is one of the largest. Equipped with highly sensitive ears, it hunts by detecting rodents through thick layers of snow. From winter where temperatures drop to -40 degrees Celsius to spring when chicks hatch, the episode features the gray owl and other graceful hunters.

Japan’s Shiretoko Peninsula is a stronghold for the brown bear, the country’s largest land predator. Cameras follow one family over a period of two years, discovering the shift in the mother-cub relationship. The young must be willing even to fight with its own mother in order to survive in this great wilderness.

In Tsavo’s national park in Kenya live male lions that have lost much of their mane. These males participate in hunts and work for their share, rather than swoop in to take the first bite after the lionesses do all the work, as usually happens. Tsavo’s harsh environment holds the key to the mysterious change in the behaviors of its lions.

Among Madagascar’s 100 varieties of lemurs, the indri is the largest. Despite being as tall as 1.4 meters standing upright, the lemur has chosen to remain a tree-dweller. The cameras showcase the indri’s incredible agility in jumping 10 meters from tree to tree, as well as document its unique female dominant family structure.

For 2 months a year, 10 million megabats gather and descend on a small forest in Zambia. The mass is great enough to impact the forest ecosystem, and also attracts hungry giant eagles and hawks. Why this many, and why here? Cameras focus on this recently discovered spectacle.

A main attraction for the ruins of Sri Lanka’s ancient city of Polonnaruwa is its population of toque macaques. Living under a strict social hierarchy, new males display extraordinary effort to win approval from the alpha male. From caring for injured babies to scheming defection, the cameras focus on the eager social climbers.

A unique presence in Israel’s Negev Desert, a place with no rain for 6 months and temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius, is the Arabian wolf, the smallest in the wolf family. They don’t hunt in packs, nor do they follow prey over long distances. The cameras capture these extremely rare wolves raising pups and fighting hyenas.

The program goes after the elusive jaguar, on the riverbank of the Pantanal wetland in Brazil during its dry season. With numbers recovering as result of conservation efforts, the cameras are able to capture a treasure trove of footage, including the carnivore’s dramatic hunt, where it kills with one bite using its incredibly powerful jaws.

In the waters off the coast of Bali, the brown-marbled grouper hunts at night. Powerful enough to break coral and able to suck prey into its large mouth in one gulp, the monster fish teams up with the deadly moray eel. The unique symbiotic relationship plays out around a sunken ship in one of the world’s most popular diving spots.

The Galapagos Islands are home to the endangered flightless cormorant, the world’s only flightless cormorant. While its small wings make life on land a struggle, in water, it is the master of the hunt. Cameras capture how these birds survive and raise young on the barren island covered with lava rocks.

Extending over the Himalayan foothills in Nepal, the Chitwan National Park is home to endangered rhinoceroses and elephants and also the gharial, one of the world’s largest crocodiles. Filmed over the dry and rainy seasons, the episode features its strikingly long thin snout, used for hunting and courting.

Every year, Port Jackson sharks travel en masse to a secluded bay in Australia. There, they lay extraordinary looking eggs that are spiral shaped. The episode captures the rare moment the female lays the egg. Observation reveals its amazing built-in mechanism that protects the young life inside.

Every year, the oriental honey buzzard arrives in Japan’s Shirakami Mountains to nest and prey on the hives of stinging insects. This time, the cameras capture the birds’ 20,000-kilometer migration as well as their gargantuan fight with the world’s largest and perhaps most formidable honeybee.

The Ashio Mountain Range in Japan, once nearly stripped of its forests by intensive mining, has seen a return of the elusive moon bear. In the spring, the mother fights to raise her cubs, while roaming males look to kill the babies so as to mate with the mother himself. The episode showcases the little documented life of these kings of the forest.

A small strait in Sulawesi, Indonesia is home to unique octopuses that display high intelligence. The mimic octopus mimics over ten different animals, while the coconut octopus uses tools. Coconuts discarded by humans are turned into shields against predator fish, and sophisticated baiting is used to hunt prey.

The rare Borneo elephant, measuring a diminutive 2.5 meters from the ground to the top of its back, live hidden away deep in the forest. A team of researchers from the World Wildlife Fund discovers the unknown lives of these elusive elephants, where different family groups cooperate to fend off predators like the saltwater crocodile.

On Australia’s isolated Christmas Island at the beginning of the rainy season, some 50 million red crabs set off on a march from the forest to the beach, to mate and spawn. The journey is treacherous, and as the eggs are released into the water, the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, lurks in wait.

On the African savannah ensues the battle between lions and hyenas. As both target the same prey, bumping heads is inevitable. To the lions’ overwhelming power, the hyenas counter with teamwork. The standoff quickly escalates, and hyena pups are caught in the middle. Power faces off against numbers in the fight for the top spot.

The cedar forest of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains is home to the rare Barbary macaque. Atypical to macaques, the males commit to caring for the young instead of physical combat. Against the backdrop of a mountains surrounded by desert, the episode captures the unique life of the peaceful macaques.

A striking feature of the plains in Australia’s Northern Territory is the towering mounds built by Cathedral termites. Each of these mounds houses several million, and a colony is said to last 50 years. Worker and soldier termites cooperate to maintain this colossal society, in spite of the constant threats nature throws their way.

Measuring 25 centimeters, the dwarf mongoose of Africa’s savannah is the smallest of the mongooses. Living in packs of around 20 with a rigid hierarchy, the lowest-ranking member takes on the most dangerous duties, like standing long watches. The selflessness later translates to a decisive change in the power dynamics.

The South Island of New Zealand, home to more than 8 species of penguin, is considered to be the flightless bird’s place of origin. From the little penguin, which still holds features of archaic penguins, to the Fiordland crested penguin that breeds in forest caves, the episode captures the rich variety found on this island of penguins.

In the dry season at Ruaha National Park in eastern Tanzania, the river completely dries up, and vegetation dies out. But the elephants, hippos, and lions are able to survive, thanks to the few trees that bear fruit at this time of the year, and the massive baobabs that act as reservoirs.

In the jungles of Sulawesi, Indonesia lives the crested black macaque, whose great variety of nuanced expressions enable sophisticated communication. The episode focuses on how these peace-loving monkeys settle confrontations without physical violence, welcome outsiders, and form a united front to fight deadly predators.

During summer, the Atlantic coast straddling northeastern United States and southeastern Canada attracts marine giants looking for plankton. By attaching specially developed cameras directly on the creatures themselves, the episode follows the basking shark and leatherback sea turtle into their world underwater.

Moreton Bay on the east coast of Australia is a rare site where over 100 of the nearly extinct dugongs gather. After a major search, the cameras capture the shy creatures, including a calf riding on the back of its mother and footage of the little known dugong’s feeding habits.

Yellowstone National Park straddles the Rocky Mountains, covering some 9,000 square kilometers. It is home to large mammals like bison and deer, while top predators like wolves and bears also roam. In winter, many remain on the frozen landscape, surviving in enclaves created by Yellowstone’s active volcanoes.

The deadly blue-ringed octopus is among the many cephalopods found in the waters of Australia. Though only 8 centimeters long, one bite from this tiny creature is enough to kill even humans. Once thought to be invincible, experts have recently discovered that the devil fish actually has a surprising natural enemy.

In May 2013, WWF Mongolia began tracking a 4-year-old female snow leopard named Tenger in the Altai Mountains. 40 high-precision automatic cameras are set 1 kilometer apart, and capture rare footage of Tenger and her two cubs, as they fight to survive in the austere mountains.

For the ring-tailed lemurs in the forests of southern Madagascar, it is the female at the forefront when settling territorial disputes. Carrying babies on their backs, the females will engage in physical kicking and pouncing, while the males prefer to stay in the background. The cameras follow the lemur’s unique lifestyle.

Along the Chobe River in Botswana, Africa, fierce battles are waged between lions and buffaloes. During the dry season, huge herds of buffaloes gather, while lions lie in wait. The buffaloes huddle to form a solid defense and charge at their foe, and lions use guerrilla tactics to confuse and drive the prey into the river.

The koala population is dense in the Otway Forest south of Melbourne in Australia. Up to 6 individuals can be spotted in a single tree, and while awake, the males are surprisingly active. The Okinawa woodpecker is extremely rare, with only about 600 thought to be living in Okinawa’s Yambaru forest. The birds don’t necessarily peck wood, but eat fruit on trees or insect larvae dug up from the ground. The episode follows these little known birds from the time the chicks hatch in the spring until they leave the nest in the fall.

In the Sonoran Desert in North America, the lives of unique birds revolve around the giant cacti. The greater roadrunner nests in the cactus’s spiny crevice. Small owls use holes left by woodpeckers. In the harsh desert environment, the survival of these animals hinges on the protection the cacti offer.

Deep in the tropical forests of Central America, the leafcutter ant is at work. As many as a million make up a colony, where highly specialized individuals cut and carry leaves back underground to farm fungi. Parasitic flies, birds, and torrential rain all pose daily threats, but the ants combat them with their complex social order and teamwork.

Every spring, half a million sandhill cranes flock along a river in the American Midwest. This is their stop before the long journey to Alaska, where they will spend the summer. The windswept plains of the Ethiopian highlands are home to one of the world’s rarest animals: the Ethiopian wolf. Less than 500 are thought to exist. At 1 meter in length and weighing 20 kilograms, they live and raise their young in packs, but hunt alone. The episode films them from January to February, when the pups are born.

As the dry season begins, 300 African elephants come together to form a super-herd at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The elephants are related. For these social animals, the great family gathering is meaningful in of itself. But there is another reason: a large number guarantees finding of a certain medicinal plant.

During winter, the Kushiro Marshland in Hokkaido, Japan is home to the red-crowned crane, or tancho. Famed for their graceful courtship dance, the cranes, once coupled, stay together to raise their young. The African wild dog is one of the most skilled hunters on the planet, with a success rate of over 80 percent. Seeing near decimation in the twentieth century, they have now surged back to over 200 individuals in Tanzania’s Serengeti. The Amazon River Basin is crowded with rare and extraordinary wildlife, but one of the few at the top of the food chain is the giant otter. Forming a family of over 20 individuals, the otters display superb teamwork as they cooperate in everything from teaching pups to swim to facing their No.1 enemy, the caiman.

The honey badger of Africa’s Kalahari Desert is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most fearless animal on earth. It devours venomous snakes and even confronts lions head-on. That it makes a meal out of anything it can get its claws on is a testament to its strength and tenacity.

With no native carnivores the primeval forests of Yambaru on the main Okinawa Island has retained its pristine ancient form to an extraordinary extent. In 2009, the Okinawa spiny rat, believed to be extinct after the recent wave of environmental impact, was rediscovered for the first time in 30 years.

On the vast land near the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido, 2 mother Hokkaido red foxes are raising 10 pups. The pair is mother and daughter, and each uses her strengths to achieve astounding parental teamwork. The episode follows this big fox family over a period of one year.

The central plains in North America stretch 3,000 kilometers north to south, and house the American bison, also known as the buffalo. Once numbering 60 million, these magnificent animals have since overcome near decimation. Against the backdrop of the changing seasons, the episode paints a portrait of life on the prairie.

The vast east African savannah is the only place in the world where lions, leopards, and cheetahs can be seen in a single location.
