  • Design and Construction Features

Housing - Lufkin-poured high tensile, heavy section cast iron and Lufkin-built fabricated steel housings provide superior rigidity and stability for accurate shaft alignment and gear meshing.

Pinions - High alloy, high tensile steel forgings, heat-treated for maximum tooth strength and durability. Pinions are typically forged integral with the shaft.

Gears - High alloy, high tensile steel forgings, press-fit and keyed to the shaft. Large diameter gears may consist of a forged alloy steel ring with a cast iron or fabricated steel hub. Concentricity of pitch circle to bearing journal is assured by cutting the teeth after the gear is mounted on its shaft.

Bearings - High precision anti-friction bearings are used on all shafts to assure accurate alignment, high mechanical efficiency, and long equipment life.

Lubrication - The slow-speed gear typically dips in a bath of oil to provide constant lubrication to the gear teeth. The splashing action also delivers a generous amount of oil to channels inside the housing cover, directing a constant gravity flow of oil to the bearings. Shaft seals eliminate oil leakage and prevent the entrance of contaminants. Type "MH" units feature a lube system with positive displacement pump, heat exchanger, and oil filter for pressurized lubrication of the gear mesh and bearings.

From project inception through completion, Lufkin can handle all phases of production in-house, which guarantees customers strict quality control standards will be imposed throughout the entire manufacturing process.

  • Gearing Specifications - High precision gearing may be double helical or single helical, through hardened or case hardened and ground, depending upon the requirements of the application. All ratings comply fully with the latest AGMA specifications.

Thermal Rating - Lufkin's thermal ratings comply with all AGMA Standards. When the transmitted power exceeds the unit's thermal rating, auxiliary cooling methods such as shaft-mount fans or oil coolers are available.

Auxiliary Equipment - Auxiliary equipment and accessories are available for all Lufkin gear drives.

    • Couplings, clutches, and guards

    • Lubrication systems for connected equipment

    • Backstops and brakes

Overhung Loads - Standard units may withstand moderate overhung loads imposed by belts, sprockets, or external gears. Lufkin should always be consulted when the application involves such a device.

Whatever the requirements of the particular application, Lufkin can provide a high-performance gear drive to meet the specific operating needs.

*The actual high-speed shaft diameter depends on the gear ratio. Shaft diameter typically decreases as the ratio increases; and the value shown is the largest standard diameter furnished with the lowest standard ratio. Values shown are for cast housings. Weight and non-critical dimensions may vary for fabricated housings. Black dimensions/weights are in inches/pounds. Red dimensions/weights are in millimeters/kilograms.
