    Structurally the nervous system is dividedinto (2) :

    1. Central nervous system (2)

    Brain

    Spinal cord

    2. Peripheral nervous system (2)

    Nerve fibers

    Nerve ganglia

    Nerve endings

    Structurally, nerve tissue consists of 2 cell types

    * Neuron (nerve cells)

    * Glial cells

    support and protect neurons,and participate in neural activity, neuralnutrition, and the defense processes of thecentral nervous system.

    NEURONNerve cells, or neurons, are responsible for

    :

    The reception, transmission, and processing

    of stimuli

    The triggering of certain cell activities

    The release of neurotransmitters and other

    informational molecules.

    Most neurons consist of three parts :

    Cell body (perikaryon)

    Dendrites

    Axon

    Gray matter has six layersof cells with different formsand sizes.

    Neurons of some regions of the cerebral cortex registerafferent(sensory) impulses; in other regions,efferent(motor) neurons generate motor impulsesthat control voluntary movements.

    Cells of the cerebral cortex are related to theintegration of sensory information and the initiationof voluntary motor responses.
