    1. The requirements for rock wool half pipe sections for use as thermal insulation on pipe systemsoperating in the temperature range of between 80 C to 175 C installed in HM Surface Shipsand Submarines.

    FOREWORD

    Sponsorship

    1. This Naval Engineering Standard (NES) is sponsored by theMinistry of Defence, Chief NavalArchitect (CNA), Section NA 131.

    2. It is to be applied as required by any Ministry of Defence contract for rock wool half pipesections for use as thermal insulation in HM Surface Ships and Submarines.

    3. This NES comprises:

    Part 1 Mineral Wool Marine Board

    Part 2 Mineral Wool Acoustic Absorption Liner

    Part 3 Rock Wool Fire Protection Slabs

    Part 4 Rock Wool Half Pipe Sections

    Part 5 Mineral Wool Slabs, 40kg/m3

    Part 6 Rock Wool Mattresses for Gas Turbine Uptakes

    Part 7 Loose Rock Wool

    4. If it is found to be technically unsuitable for any particular requirement the sponsor is to beinformed inwriting of the circumstances with a copy to ChiefNaval Architect, Section NA145.

    5. Any user of this NES in MOD or industry may propose an amendment to it. Proposals foramendments which are:

    a. not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be made to the Sponsor of theNES;

    b. directly applicable to a particular contract are to be dealt with using existing proceduresor as specified in the contract.

    6. No alteration is to be made to this NES except by the issue of a formal amendment.

    7. Unless otherwise stated, reference in this NES to approval, approved, authorized or similarterms, means by the Ministry of Defence.

    8. Any significant amendments that may be made to this NES at a later date will be indicatedby a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the lineintervals.

    9. This NES has been reissued as a result of a general review and update of the contents.

    Conditions of Release

    General

    10. This Naval Engineering Standard (NES) has been prepared for the use of the Crown and ofits contractors in the execution of contracts for the Crown. The Crown hereby excludes allliability (other than liability for death or personal injury) whatsoever and howsoever arising(including but without limitation, negligence on the part of the Crown, its servants or agents)for any loss or damage however caused where the NES is used for any other purpose.

    11. This document is Crown Copyright and the information herein may be subject to Crown orthird party rights. It is not to be released, reproduced or published without written permissionof the MOD.

    12. The Crown reserves the right to amend or modify the contents of this NES without consultingor informing any holder.

    MOD Tender or Contract Process

    13. ThisNES is the property of the Crown and unless otherwise authorized in writing by theMODmust be returned on completion of the contract, or submission of the tender, in connectionwith which it is issued.

    14. When this NES is used in connection with aMOD tender or contract, the user is to ensure thathe is in possession of the appropriate version of each document, including related documents,relevant to each particular tender or contract. Enquiries in this connection may be made ofthe local MOD(PE) Quality Assurance Representative or the Authority named in the tenderor contract.

    15. When NES are incorporated into MOD contracts, users are responsible for their correctapplication and for complying with contracts and any other statutory requirements.Compliance with an NES does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

    1. TYPE APPROVAL

    a. Before a manufacturer may supply this product it must be accepted by theApproving Authority as complying with the requirements of this NES. TheApproving Authority for this material is the Procurement Executive, Ministryof Defence, CNA, Section NA 131.

    b. To obtain type approval the manufacturer must comply with Clauses 1.c., 1.d.and 1.e.

    c. Samples and test data of the material the manufacturer proposes to supply areto be provided.

    d. Before a manufacturer is accepted as a supplier of material to this NES he is tosupply to the Approving Authority or the Ministrys adviser on occupationalhygiene, full particulars of the chemical constituents of the finished materialtogether with any other information necessary to enable an assessment of theoccupational hazard to bemade. For fibrous (wool) components, information onthe fibre characteristics is also to be supplied. When thematerial is intended foruse in HM Submarines additional information will be sought to enableconsideration to be given to any harmful effect the material may have on theclosed environment of the submarine. Any such information will be treatedstrictly in confidence.

    e. Recommendations for the safe handling of the material are to be provided.

    f. In selecting materials or substances to meet this NES the manufacturer is totake into account their relative toxicity or health hazard. Preference will begiven by CNA to those materials which, while meeting the technicalrequirements of this NES, create the least hazard in their storage, handling,application, removal and disposal.

    g. If any change ismade in the formulation of the material after initial acceptancefull particulars of the changes are to be supplied to the Approving Authority sothat acceptability of the material can be reconsidered.

    3. PACKAGING AND IDENTIFICATION

    3.1 Packaging

    a. The rock wool half pipe sections are to be packaged in fire-retardant cardboardcartons, which are to be marked FIRE-RETARDANT CARTON.

    3.2 Identification

    a. Each package is to bear a label, clearly visible, giving the following information:

    (1) Description of contents.

    (2) Dimensions of contents.

    (3) Contract or order number and date.

    (4) Manufacturers batch number.

    (5) Manufacturers identification (eg firms name).

    (6) NATO stock number
