    1866 -1905

    In the 1860s Henri Nestl, apharmacist, developed a food forbabies who were unable tobreastfeed. His first success was apremature infant who could nottolerate his mother's milk or any ofthe usual substitutes. Peoplequickly recognized the value of thenew product, after Nestl's newformula saved the child's life, andsoon, Farine Lacte Henri Nestlwas being sold in much of Europe.

    1905-1918

    In 1905 Nestl merged with theAnglo-Swiss Condensed MilkCompany. By the early 1900s, thecompany was operating factoriesin the United States, Britain,Germany and Spain. World War Icreated new demand for dairyproducts in the form ofgovernment contracts. By the endof the war, Nestl's production hadmore than doubled.

    operations and reducing debt. The1920s saw Nestl's first expansioninto new products, with chocolatethe Company's second mostimportant activity

    1938 -1944

    Nestl felt the effects of WorldWar II immediately. Profitsdropped from $20 million in 1938

    to $6 million in 1939. Factorieswere established in developingcountries, particularly LatinAmerica. Ironically, the warhelped with the introduction of theCompany's newest product,Nescaf, which was a staple drinkof the US military. Nestl'sproduction and sales rose in thewartime economy.

    1944 -1975

    The end of World War II was thebeginning of a dynamic phase forNestl. Growth accelerated andcompanies were acquired. In 1947came the merger with Maggiseasonings and soups. Crosse &Blackwell followed in 1960, as didFindus (1963), Libby's (1971) andStouffer's (1973). Diversificationcame with a shareholding inL'Oral in 1974.

    1866 -1905

    In the 1860s Henri Nestl, apharmacist, developed a food forbabies who were unable tobreastfeed. His first success was apremature infant who could nottolerate his mother's milk or any ofthe usual substitutes. Peoplequickly recognized the value of thenew product, after Nestl's new

    formula saved the child's life, andsoon, Farine Lacte Henri Nestlwas being sold in much of Europe.

    1905-1918

    In 1905 Nestl merged with theAnglo-Swiss Condensed Milk

    Company. By the early 1900s, thecompany was operating factoriesin the United States, Britain,Germany and Spain. World War I

    created new demand for dairyproducts in the form ofgovernment contracts. By the endof the war, Nestl's production hadmore than doubled.

    1918 -1938

    After the war Governmentcontracts dried up and consumersswitched back to fresh milk.

    However, Nestl's managementresponded quickly, streamliningoperations and reducing debt. The1920s saw Nestl's first expansioninto new products, with chocolatethe Company's second mostimportant activity

    1938 -1944

    Nestl felt the effects of World

    War II immediately. Profitsdropped from $20 million in 1938to $6 million in 1939. Factorieswere established in developingcountries, particularly LatinAmerica. Ironically, the warhelped with the introduction of theCompany's newest product,Nescaf, which was a staple drinkof the US military. Nestl'sproduction and sales rose in thewartime economy.

    1944 -1975

    The end of World War II was thebeginning of a dynamic phase forNestl. Growth accelerated andcompanies were acquired. In 1947

    Nestl's growth in the developingworld partially offset a slowdownin the Company's traditionalmarkets. Nestl made its secondventure outside the food industry

    by acquiring Alcon LaboratoriesInc..

    1981 -1996

    Nestl divested a number ofbusinesses1980 / 1984. In 1984,Nestl's improved bottom lineallowed the Company to launch anew round of acquisitions, themost important being American

    food giant Carnation.

    1996+

    The first half of the 1990s provedto be favorable for Nestl: tradebarriers crumbled and worldmarkets developed into more orless integrated trading areas. Since1996 there have been acquisitionsincluding San Pellegrino (1997),Spillers Petfoods (1998) andRalston Purina (2002).
