Page 4: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

4

o With dual Power Distribution Units (PDUs) with 120VAC or 220VAC power supplies.

o The rack rails that are provided for the Veritas 5250 Appliance are extensible to 32”

(813mm). This distance is the maximum depth that is allowed between rack posts. If the

distance between rack posts is longer than 32” (813mm) the rails and the appliance

cannot be properly installed.

o There must be a minimum depth of 30 inches (76 cm) between the front of the rack and

the rear of the rack.

• Rank Units (RU):

o Note that each rack unit (RU) is 44.50 mm (1.752 inches) in height. The 5250 Appliance

and the 5250 Storage Shelf are both 2RU high.

o One (1) Rack Unit (RU) equals three (3) holes.

o Determining Rack space needed:

Example: If you were installing one (1) Appliance and four (4) Storage Shelves that

would be 2RU x 5 = 10RU, you would need 10RUs of rack space to install all five (5)

pieces of equipment.

• Rack holes must not be threaded but have cutouts in front and back of rack to secure rails with

either Snap-in cage nuts or pins along with screws.

Page 5: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

5

• Storage Shelf - Front and rear cut-outs are used for inserting rail (left and right) pins with screw.

o Rear View

o Front View

• Appliance - Front and rear cut-outs are used for inserting rail (left and right) pins with screw.

o Rear View

o Front View

• Storage Shelves:

o Up to Six (6) storage shelves.

Page 6: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

6

o NetBackup 5250 Appliances support up to six 2U12 storage shelves.

o Before you place the system into a production environment, you must migrate all MSDP

data from the appliance to the first external storage shelf. After you migrate the MSDP

data, the system's usable storage space may fluctuate, depending on how much actual

storage space the MSDP data pool uses.

▪ Note: Spanning MSDP data across both Veritas 5250 Appliance internal storage

and a storage shelf is not recommended as it may result in degraded

performance.

▪ Warning: Failure to migrate MSDP data after you connect a storage shelf may

result in degraded appliance throughput performance.

▪ For more information about migrating MSDP data, see the following document:

Moving the MSDP partition from a base disk to an expansion disk for optimum

performance.

o Storage shelves are heavier than the appliances. Storage shelves should be installed at

the bottom of the rack, below the appliance.

Cabling:

• Customer must provide the below items:

o 1-Gb/s network cables

o 10-Gb/s network cables

o Fiber-Channel cables for client and device connections

o KVM cable.

• Appliance will include two power cables.

Page 7: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

7

• Each storage shelf will include:

o Two (2) power cables.

o Two (2) SAS-3 cables for connections between compute node and storage shelf or

connections between each storage shelf.

o Each SAS-3 cable is 1 meter (3.28 feet) long. The 1-meter cable is long enough to

connect an appliance to the fourth storage shelf when the recommended configuration

is used.

o Longer SAS-3 cables are supported with the 2U12 Storage Shelf, if needed for the

configuration. However, Veritas doesn’t have them available so you will need to

purchase cable.

▪ Here is an example of one vendor who sells a 3 Meter SAS 3 cable:

See CS-SASMINIHD2-003 for 3M cable

rs/Catalog/Library/InfoManage/HD_MINI-SAS_CABLES_(SFF-8644).htm

Note: Field Services Techs will require direction from the customer on:

• Which PDU to plug in equipment’s power supply cables.

• Which network cables will be plugged into which Appliance network interfaces.

• Which HBA Fiber connections will be plugged into which Appliance HBA cards and ports.

Network connectors:

• The following types of connectors are provided by Veritas:

o Two 10/25 GBASE-SR Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules with Duplex LC

connector.

• With 5250 and newer appliances the requirements are SFP28 form factor optics that support

850nnm short wave.

o Veritas recommends the following vendors:

▪ Finisar

▪ JDSU

Page 8: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

8

• Cables Used:

o Ethernet network interfaces require RJ45 Cat 6 cables for IPMI, Eth0, Eth1, Eth2, and

Eth3 interfaces.

o Multi-mode Fiber Cable for PCI Card interfaces.

Local Appliance Connection:

• To configure IPMI, Field Technician will require one of the following from the customer:

▪ Crash Cart (VGA Monitor and USB Keyboard)

▪ KVM cable, if a KVM has been setup

▪ Laptop

Management device:

• In order to perform a hardware check after the installation or to configure the Appliance, the

Veritas Advanced Services Engineer (ASE) will need to do a WebEx session with the customer to

access the appliance remotely.

o Remote Management Console on 5250 as the recommended option of iKVM over

HTML5 option to connect to the Appliance.

o Another connection option is to use the Java console. You need to ensure the latest Java

version software has been installed your Windows machine.

• For a list of Network ports required for communication between the Appliance and the

Management device, see the:

o Required Ports section of this document.

o If the IPMI port is connected to a managed switch port, it is recommended that you

configure the switch port to auto-negotiation.

o Verify the remote management port auto-negotiates its link speed to one (1) Gbps.

o If you have a private internal network, remember to configure the settings accordingly

in your network address translation (NAT).

o The remote management port must be configured as a DHCP or static address.

Monitoring:

• Call Home Feature:

o The Call Home feature is designed to alert you and Veritas in the event of a hardware

alert. Call Home uploads hardware and software information to a secure Veritas server

once an alert is detected. This information may be used by Veritas to proactively open a

support case with Technical Support. A Technical Support Engineer will contact you for

further diagnosis such as gathering the DataCollect logs and to arrange for replacement

of the reported component, if needed.

o The collected hardware information includes the appliance and any configured

enclosures. Although this feature is enabled by default, only basic information such as

appliance model and serial number are sent to Veritas. To take full advantage of this

feature, Veritas recommends completing and maintaining the additional technical

contact information. Having up-to-date contact information will allow Veritas support to

expedite the resolution of the detected hardware event.

o When Call Home is enabled and a hardware event occurs, the following information is

uploaded:

▪ Power supply wattage

▪ CPU voltage

▪ an RPM

▪ Disk status

▪ Critical temperatures

o When Call Home is disabled and a hardware event occurs, the appliance only generates

a local alert by email to notify you of the hardware failure. Additional information on

configuring email notifications may be found in the appliance documents below.

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000068536

Page 10: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

10

o The appliance uses the HTTPS protocol and port 443 to connect to the Veritas

AutoSupport server.

o Call Home Registration will not complete successfully, if Call Home is not functioning

properly.

• SMTP configuration is for alerting your internal teams/contacts to any hardware or software

issues affecting the appliance. You must either:

o Configure your mail server to allow the appliance to use it as a mail relay.

Or

o Create an account for the appliance on your mail server and supply login credentials.

Necessary software:

• The following pieces of software will be necessary over the course of the engagement and

should be downloaded (and installed if applicable) on the management device:

o The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) also referred to as Veritas

Remote Manager. You can use the remote manager to log on to the Appliance CLISH.

▪ Before you use the Remote Management interface, the following prerequisites

must be met:

• A supported Web browser (see Web browsers supported by Appliance).

• A JViewer application or iKVM over HTML5 will enable you to remotely

monitor and control the appliance. The JViewer application requires the

latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

o Putty or another SSH client. This will be a helpful tool; you can use copy and paste,

whereas IPMI you cannot. In addition, Putty has a little better performance than IPMI.

IPMI is required, at first, for hardware checks and to configure the first interface then

Putty utility can access Appliance.

o A workstation capable of mounting a CIFS or NFS share to the appliance and/or a

Workstation capable of SCP connections from the appliance. This will be needed to

transfer files, e.g., Emergency Engineering Binaries (EEBs), Patches, Firmware updates,

Datacollect logs, and ASR utility output.

Page 11: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

11

• If the target version of the Appliance is not "As shipped", then the appliance will need to be re-

imaged with customer’s requested version level prior to configuring the appliance.

Warning: If the new appliance will be a Media server then the new appliance version

cannot be higher than the Master server’s version.

o There are two ways to acquire the software needed to re-image the appliance.

▪ You can download the ISO image via Veritas Download Website. In order to

download the software, you will need a MyVeritas.com account.

• Download instructions go to

https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/downloads

• Select “Appliances” under “Product” option

• Select “NetBackup Appliance OS” under “Sub product” option

• Select appropriate version under “Version” option

• Recommend to download at least one day prior to scheduled event, due

to the length of time needed to down software.

• Please register Appliances at our Veritas Website: https://my.veritas.com ;

o For instructions see,

Veritas Appliance AutoSupport Reference Guide - 2.0 for NetBackup Appliances

o Registering your appliance is a vital step in allowing Veritas the ability to help maximize

availability of your appliance, and provide proactive monitoring support. Registration

provides Veritas with accurate contact details and site-specific information, which aids

in expediting support, field services, and customer notification of failures.

o Registration also ensures that you receive product updates and other important

information about your appliance.

o Although Veritas recommends that you enable Call Home for an improved support

experience, you can register your appliance without enabling Call Home.

Network/DNS:

• At least two (2) IP addresses need to be reserved for the Appliance, one (1) for the IPMI and the

other for the primary interface. These addresses are required to begin configuring the appliance.

• The network switch or switches need to be configured prior to configuring the appliance

network interfaces.

• Proper name resolution (DNS or hosts files) is a requirement for NetBackup to function

properly. The Appliance should be registered with any DNS servers in the environment. (I.e.,

both forward and reverse DNS lookups of Appliance hostname/IP address should work.). If you

select "DNS only" in the drop-down for "Name Resolution" under "Network Environment" on

the next page, it is imperative that DNS be functioning properly; please test name resolution

before time of installation.

• VLAN information is only required if you are using VLAN tagging and the appliance will be

connected to a trunk port of the VLAN.

• IPMI –

o Remote management purposes.

o Verify the remote management port auto-negotiates its link speed to one (1) Gbps.

o The remote management port must be configured as a DHCP or static address.

o If you have a private internal network, remember to configure the settings accordingly

in your network address translation (NAT).

• Eth0/NIC1 –

o Optional for initial configuration of appliance.

o For use as an administrative network that does not provide any backup data transfer.

o Veritas does not support forming a NIC bond using Eth0/NIC1 with any other Eth/NIC

ports.

Page 13: NetBackup 5250 Appliance Pre-Installation Requirements

13

Required Ports:

• RMM Ports (IPMI):

• About NetBackup Appliance Ports:

o In addition to the ports used by NetBackup software, NetBackup appliances also provide for both

in-band and out-of-band management. The out-of-band management is through a separate

network connection, the Remote Management Module (RMM), and the Intelligent Platform

Management Interface (IPMI). Open these ports through the firewall as appropriate to allow

access to the management services from a remote laptop or KVM (keyboard, video monitor,

mouse).

o Warning: The NetBackup Appliance Web Console is now available only over HTTPS on the

default port 443. Use https://<appliance-name> to log in to the Web Console, where

appliance-name is the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the appliance and can also be an IP

address.
