Foreword መቅድም

I am delighted to be leading this economic mission to Ethio-pia, which is a follow up to the successful Ethiopia business event hosted last November by Lilianne Ploumen, our Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. The Min-istry of Foreign Affairs is keen to explore the opportunities Ethiopia has to offer and is proud to be contributing a Dutch business delegation representing the agricultural sector, with a particular focus on horticulture and dairy.

The number of Dutch investments in Ethiopia is steadily rising. Some 130 Dutch companies are currently active in Ethiopia, contributing to the Netherlands’s posi-tion as second largest investor from the EU and fifth largest export destination. These companies have already discovered the benefits of investing in and trading with Ethiopia, a country that has demonstrated an impressive double-digit eco-nomic growth throughout the last decade and is keen to continue on the path of inclusive development.

The Dutch agenda for aid, trade and development is compatible with the Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plan. As a driver of employment and agent for change via the transfer of knowledge, the private sector is crucial to the process of inclu-sive, sustainable growth. And economic missions are a powerful tool for promoting private sector activities relating to development. We strongly believe that compa-nies can offer market-based solutions to development challenges. The agricultural sector is a case in point. Our countries’ cooperation in agri-logistics ensures better access to the world market for fresh produce from Ethiopia. We expect Dutch com-panies in Ethiopia to adhere to the principals of corporate social responsibility and help them to integrate CSR in their business case.

A conducive business environment is a prerequisite if the private sector is to reap its full potential in contributing to inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The Netherlands is therefore investing in ways to improve the business climate and strengthen the private sector in Ethiopia, for example through our cooperation with the Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority and commitment to expanding access to finance for SMEs.

I am confident that the business delegation will acquire a host of new networks, business contacts and ideas, and look forward to a successful and inspiring mis-sion.

የደች ድርጅቶች በአሁኑ ሰዓት በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ እየሰሩ ይገኛሉ። ይህም ኔዘርልላንድስ ከአውሮፓ

ህብረት ሀገራት ሁለተኛ ትልቅ ኢንቬስተርና አምስተኛዋ ትልቅ የኤክስፖርት መዳረሻ እንድትሆን

አስተዋጽኦ አድርጓል። እነዚህ ድርጅቶች አስገራሚ ባለሁለት አሃዝ የኢኮኖሚ ዕድገት ባለፉት አስርት

ዓመታት ባስመዘገበችውና በተያያዘችው አሳታፊ የዕድገት ጎዳና ለመቀጠል ፍላጎት ካላት ኢትዮጵያ ጋር

መስራት ያለውን ጠቀሜታ ተረድተውታል።

የደች የተራድኦ፣ ንግድና ልማት አጀንዳ ከኢትዮጵያ የዕድገትና ትራንስፎርሜሽን እቅድ ጋር አብሮ

የሚሄድ ነው። የዕውቀት ሽግግርን በመጠቀም የስራ ዕድል እና የለውጥ መንስኤ እንደመሆኑ መጠን

የግሉ ዘርፍ አሳታፊ ለሆነ እና ቀጣይነት ላለው ዕድገት ወሳኝ ነው። የኢኮኖሚ ተልዕኮዎችም ለዕድገት

ጠቃሚ የሆነውን የግሉን ሴክተር ስራዎች ለማስተዋወቅ ታላቅ ሚና ይጫወታሉ። ከልማት ጋር

ለተያያዙ ችግሮች ድርጅቶች ገበያን መሠረት ያደረጉ መፍትሄዎችን ይሰጣሉ ብለን እናምናለን።

የግብርናው ሴክተር ለዚህ ጥሩ ማሳያነው። የሀገራሪቱ የግብርና እና የሎጂስቲክስ ትብብር የኢትዮጵያ

ምርት ለዓለም ገበያ የበለጠ እንዲቀርብም ይረዳል። በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ያሉ የደች ድርጅቶች የኮርፖሬት

ማህበራዊ ሃላፊነት መርሆችን እንደሚከተሉ እንጠብቅባቸዋለን። እንዲሁም በስራቸው ውስጥ ሲኤስአር

(CSR) እንዲያጠቃልሉ እንረዳቸዋለን።

የግሉ ሴክተር ሙሉ አቅሙን እንዲጠቀምና ለአሳታፊ እና ቀጣይነት ላለው የኢኮኖሚ ዕድገት

አስተዋጽኦ እንዲያደርግ ምቹ የስራ ሁኔታ መኖር ቅድመ ሁኔታ ነው። ስለዚህ ኔዘርላንድስ ያለውን

የስራ ሁኔታ ለማሻሻልና የግሉን ሴክተር በኢትዮጵያ ለማጠናከር እየሠራች ነው። ከኢትዮጵያ ገቢዎችና

ጉምሩክ ባለስልጣን ጋር ያለን ትብብር እንዲሁም ጥቃቅንና አነስተኛ ኢንተርፕራይዞች የፋይናንስ ድጋፍ

እንዲያገኙ የሠራነው ሥራ እንደ ምሳሌ ሊጠቀስ ይችላል።

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to Ethiopia for this economic mission, organised by the Embassy together with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) and our Ethiopian partners.

Ethiopia has seen strong economic growth in recent years and is determined to continue this trend. Growth has been accompanied by impressive results in poverty reduction and other social indicators, and in food production/food security

and infrastructure. Prospects are good for private sector investment in a number of areas, including horticulture and agrifood, with increasing focus on sectors where value can be added and large numbers of jobs created. Equally, there are plenty of opportunities for parties interested in trading with Ethiopia. And these will increase further in the future.

These developments are reflected in changing relations between the Netherlands and Ethiopia. Whereas the relationship used to focus on development cooperation, it has now broadened to a dynamic partnership – a partnership in which aid, trade and economic cooperation are of equal importance.

The mission’s programme will be focusing on opportunities for doing business in Ethiopia. Many Dutch companies have already discovered this potential; more than 130 companies currently have a permanent basis in Ethiopia, and this number is increasing. Hopefully this mission will provide you with some useful insights and interesting leads for future investments and partnerships. And remember: the Embassy is here to help you do business with Ethiopia!

በማምረት/ራስን በመቻል እንዲሁም በቁሳቁስ አቅርቦት ረገድ በታዩ አስገራሚ ውጤቶች የታገዘ

ነው። የከብት እርባታና እርሻን ጨምሮ በግል ኢንቨስትመንት መስኮች መልካም ስራዎች እየታዩ

ነው። ተጨማሪ እሴት ያላቸው መስኮችን በማጠናከርና በርካታ የስራ ዕድሎችን መፍጠር ላይም

ትኩረት ተሰጥቷል። በተጨማሪም ከኢትዮጵያ ጋር ለመስራት ፍላጎት ላላቸው ሁሉ በርካታ ዕድሎች

ተዘጋጅተዋል። ይህ ወደፊትም የሚቀጥል ይሆናል።

እነዚህ ዕድገቶች የኔዘርላንድና የኢትዮጵያ ግንኙነት መቀየር ውጤቶች ናቸው። ግንኙነቱ በልማት

UFF African Agri Investments

UFF is one of the leading companies (USD190 mio under assets) in commercial-scale farmland investment in Africa and manages a number of African agricultural funds on behalf of a wide range of pension funds. UFF, through its partner Old Mutual Investment Group, has an institutional presence on the African continent since 1845. Our offices are in Amsterdam and in Cape Town.

UFF invests in primary agricultural projects, leased and managed by an operator. Average deal size USD 10-30 mio investing in row crops, permanent crops and livestock.

We operate in a structure where we acquire the farm with infrastructure and lease this out to an operator for minimum investment period (10-12 years). We will optimize (upgrade and develop) the farm up to its full potential based on and led by market drivers. A dedicated health care and education centre is integrated.

We can also structure greenfield operations thru our development company.
