1.4 About HyperTerminalThe HyperTerminal communications program comes with Microsoft Windows products, and can be used for very basic NetPerformer console functions if no terminal emulation program is available.

Caution: HyperTerminal is not recommended for adjusting the NetPerformer configuration or monitoring its operations. Known problems include the following:

• The arrow keys cannot be used to view channel status on all slots

• The console speed cannot be changed from the default 9600 bps after the console connection is up and running

• On some computers, the default Emulation setting of the HyperTerminal com-munications program can potentially cause problems for console operations.

If you must use HyperTerminal for your console connection, you should change the Emulation setting from Auto detect to ANSI, as follows:

1. Access HyperTerminal using the Windows Start button and drop-down menus:

Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal

2. If you have already defined the connection to the NetPerformer console port, open that connection:

File > Open > your_filename.ht

3. If you have not yet defined the connection to the NetPerformer console port, create a new connection:

File > New Connection > your_filename

4. Open the Properties window for the connection:

File > Properties

5. Click on the Settings tab to view the current value of the Emulation parameter.

6. Select the value ANSI from the list box for the Emulation parameter.

7. Click OK.

NOTE: The above procedure does not resolve the problems with arrow key func-tionality or console speed, and should be considered a temporary solution only. You should procure a more robust terminal emulation software program for configuration and monitoring purposes. Contact Technical Support if you need further assistance.

2.3 Environmental Information

2.3.1 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – WEEE

The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) legislation aims to raise the level of recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and to encourage designers to create products with recycling in mind.

The NetPerformer equipment that you bought has required the extraction and use of natural resources for its production. It may contain hazardous substances that could impact health and the environment.

In order to avoid the dissemination of those substances in our environment and to diminish the pressure on the natural resources, we encourage you to use the appropriate take-back systems. Those systems will reuse or recycle most of the materials of your end-of-life equipment in a sound way.

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol invites you not to dispose of WEEE as unsorted municipal waste and to collect such WEEE separately.

If you need more information on the collection, reuse and recycling systems, please contact your local or regional waste administration.

7.1 Serial Port4 or 8 serial ports for WAN/user traffic:

• HD-26 female connector

• Asynchronous speeds: 300 bps to 115.2 Kbps

• Synchronous speeds: 1200 bps to 6 Mbps (6144 Kbps) without data compression; 896 Kbps link port maximum speed with data compression

For further details concerning the serial port, turn to “WAN/User Port Specifications” on page 7-4.

7.2 Custom HD-26 CableThe serial ports require a custom-made HD-26 male cable, which can be ordered from Memotec or your NetPerformer distributor. For ordering information, refer to “Sales Contacts” on page 1-2.

The required cable depends on the interface and gender of the attached equipment. Twelve custom HD-26 serial cable models are available:

• V.35/V.11 DCE, V.35/V.11 DTE (for details see “V.35/V.11 Cables” on page 7-5)

• TIA-232 (V.24) DCE, TIA-232 (V.24) DTE (see “TIA-232 (V.24) Cables” on page 7-5)

• X.21 DCE, X.21 DTE, with 4-40 screw on the DB-25 connector (see “X.21 Cables” on page 7-5)

• X.21 EU DCE, X.21 EU DTE, with metric M3 screw on the DB-15 connector (see “X.21 EU Cables” on page 7-6)

• TIA-449 (V.36) DCE, TIA-449 (V.36) DTE (see “TIA-449 (V.36) Cables” on page 7-6)

• TIA-530 DCE, TIA-530 DTE (see “TIA-530 Cables” on page 7-6).

All cables are 1.8 meters (6 feet) long, and have HD-26 male connectors at one end. At the other end:

• A male connector indicates that the cable is DTE and that it connects to a DCE device (a modem, for example).

• A female connector indicates that the cable is DCE and that it connects to a DTE device (a terminal or another NetPerformer, for example).

NOTE: When ordering a cable for the serial port, make sure you specify the correct gender.

7-2 Memotec

Page 65: NetPerformer® SDM-8400 Hardware Installation Guide HIG.pdfThe SDM-8400 is a data-only integrated access device that supports multiple serial ports and Ethernet. It increases serial

Serial Port and User Equipment Connection

The HD-26 female connector automatically detects the interface and gender according to the type of HD-26 custom cable that is installed. For example, with a V.35/V.11 DTE cable the port will select V.35/V.11 electrical characteristics and DTE. Software configuration of these characteristics is thus not required.

For details concerning the custom serial cable, refer to “Custom Serial Cable Specifications” on page 7-5.

7.3 Connecting the User EquipmentTo connect the user equipment to a serial port:

1. Locate the HD-26 custom cable that is appropriate for:

• The device you are attaching: DTE or DCE

• The interface you want to use: V.35/V.11, TIA-232 (V.24), X.21, X.21 EU, TIA-449 (V.36) or TIA-530.

2. Connect the male end of the HD-26 cable to the SDM-8400 serial port.

3. Connect the other end of the cable to the user device (CSU/DSU, modem, router, front end processor, etc.).

Caution: Do not connect a data port (WAN/user) to a host, PU, or Frame Relay device until you have configured the port protocol via the software. Refer to the NetPerformer System Reference for details.

7.3.1 Activating the User Equipment ConnectionTo activate the user equipment connection:

1. Configure all parameters and options for the connection. Refer to the NetPerformer Reference Guides, which are included on the NetPerformer Documentation CD.

2. Activate a data connection by bringing up the connected user equipment.

3. Activate a voice connection by dialing a speed dial number to place a call.

4. Check the status of the NetPerformer, its connections and all active channels, ports, PVCs and SVCs by executing the statistics commands (refer to the NetPerformer Reference Guides for details).
