Section 2: Rules ClarifcationsTis section contains the official rule clarications andenhancements or Android: Netrunner . Used in conjunctionwith the core set rulebook, these clarications andenhancements should enable a player to navigate through themost complex situations that can arise while playing the game.
Accessing When Accessed AbilitiesA card with an ability that triggers when the card is accesseddoes not have to be active in order or the ability to trigger.When resolving such an ability, simply ollow the instructionson the card.
Example : Te Corporation does not have to rez Project Junebug be ore the Runner accesses it in order to use its ability.
Accessing ArchivesWhen accessing cards in Archives, the Runner turns all cards
aceup in Archives be ore accessing them. Ten he or sheaccesses and resolves individual cards one by one, in any orderhe wants.
I the Runner uses a replacement effect, then he or she does notturn any acedown cards aceup.
Accessing Multiple Cards from HQWhen the Runner accesses multiple cards rom HQ, the cardsare accessed one at a time, and do not return to HQ until theRunner is nished accessing.
Accessing Multiple Cards from R&DTe Runner can intersperse accessing cards rom R&D withany upgrades installed in the root o R&D. Te Runner cannotchoose to access the cards in R&D out o order.
Example : Te Runner has an R&D Inter ace installed and makesa success ul run on R&D. He accesses the top card o R&D, and
aferward chooses and accesses an upgrade installed in the root oR&D. Te Runner then nishes accessing cards by accessing thesecond card o R&D.
Scoring and Stealing AgendasAdvancement tokens are removed rom an agenda whenever itis scored or stolen.
Terminology“Additional”Te word “additional” denotes an ability that modies anotherability or a game state. Te additional ability is resolvedsimultaneously with any ability it is modi ying, and under the
same conditions as that ability.
“All”Te word “all” includes the number zero.
Example: Te Corporation plays an Oversight AI and rezzes aWoodcutter . Te Runner encounters the Woodcutter while it haszero subroutines. Te Runner is considered to have broken all thesubroutines on the Woodcutter, and the ice is trashed.
“Bypass”When an effect allows the Runner to “bypass” a piece o ice, heor she immediately passes that ice and continues the run. All
subroutines (including 0) on the ice bypassed are not broken.Example : Te Runner encounters a piece o ice that she canbypass with Femme Fatale. Te last piece o ice the Runnerencountered was Chum , whose subroutine the Runner did notbreak. Te Runner pays to bypass the current piece o ice withFemme Fatale, and takes 3 net damage rom Chum’s ability, sincesubroutines on bypassed ice are not broken.
“Hosted”“Hosted” is always sel -re erential and re ers to cards andtokens hosted on that card, unless otherwise noted. Cards arealways hosted aceup, unless otherwise noted.
“Limit 1 console per player.”Tis restriction re ers only to active consoles. A player can havemultiple copies o a console, and even different consoles, in hisor her deck.
Te limit o 1 console per player prevents the Runner rominstalling a second console, even i the Runner wishes to trashthe rst.
ollowing the active effect on the current ability. I this abilityresults in another ability meeting its trigger condition, then thatability is also “chained.” Resolve all the abilities rom the mostrecent trigger condition be ore continuing.
Example: Te Corp makes a success ul trace against a Runnerduring a run on a server that has ChiLo City Grid installed. TeCorp also has a scored Sentinel De ense Program. Te Runnerhas a Spinal Modem installed, and the success ul trace meets thetrigger condition or both ChiLo City Grid and Spinal Modemsimultaneously. Since it is the Runner’s turn, the Spinal Modemresolves be ore the ChiLo City Grid. As part o the resolution othe Modem, the Runner takes 1 brain damage. Tis means thatthe Sentinel De ense Program has met its trigger condition, andso it is a chained reaction that resolves be ore the ChiLo CityGrid.
Non-Resolvable AbilitiesConditional abilities resolve afer meeting their triggercondition. However, i the game state advances past the triggercondition due to simultaneous effects or a chain reaction, thenthe triggered ability cannot be resolved.
Example : Te Runner hits a ollbooth that she can bypass withFemme Fatale. Both cards have the same trigger condition, butbecause it is the Runner’s turn the Femme Fatale resolves rst.Te ice is bypassed, and since the game state has progressed toa new step o the run, the trigger condition or ollbooth is nolonger valid and the ability to orce the Runner to pay credits doesnot resolve.
SubroutinesUnless specied otherwise, the Corporation always chooses theeffects o a subroutine, when necessary.
Example : Ichi 1.0 has “ | rash 1 program.” I this subroutinetriggers, then the Corporation chooses and trashes one o theRunner’s installed programs.
Replacement EffectsReplacement effects can only occur once per trigger. Areplacement effect uses the word “instead”.
Example : Te Runner cannot use two Bank Jobs during the samerun. When the run is success ul, the Runner may either accesscards or use the ability o a Bank Job. Using Bank Job replacesaccessing cards, so once the Runner triggers one o the Bank Jobshe cannot trigger the other.
Using IcebreakersTe Runner can boost the strength o his icebreakers outside oan encounter with a piece o ice. However, unless the icebreakersays otherwise, its strength is immediately reset to its previous value.
“If successful...”Whenever there is an “I success ul...” effect tied to the outcomeo a run, the run itsel must have been success ul against thespecied server(s), i applicable. I the Runner initiates a runagainst the specied server but ends the run on a differentserver, the “I success ul...” effect does not resolve when the runis success ul.
Example : Te Runner plays Legworkon HQ. During the run,a Bull rog moves the Runner to R&D. Even though the run issuccess ul, the Runner cannot use the “I success ul...” effect onLegwork because the run was not success ul against HQ.
I the ability including “I success ul...” does not speci y a server,then it does not matter i the attacked server is changed duringthe run, and the ability resolves as normal.
“Normally be Trashed”rashing cards that “cannot normally be trashed” only re ers to
trashing cards that do not have a trash cost.
InstalledEvents, operations, and identity cards are never installed.
UninstalledAnytime an installed card enters HQ, R&D, Archives, or theRunner’s grip, stack, or heap, or is removed rom the game, thecard has been “uninstalled.”
“Using”Any time an ability is optional, the player resolving the abilityis “using” the ability. Tis includes all paid abilities and alloptional conditional abilities (triggered abilities that use theword “may” or “allows”).
“For each”Doing something “ or each” instance o something never resultsin zero o the ormer; rather, i the condition is not ullledthen the effect does not resolve.
Example : Te Runner accesses a Cerebral Overwriter rom R&D.Te Runner does not take 0 damage; instead, they take 1 damage or each advancement token on Cerebral Overwriter, whichresults in nothing happening.
Actions and Abilities Triggering Actions and AbilitiesA player can only trigger an action or ability i its effect has thepotential to change the game state. Tis potential is assessedwithout taking into account the consequences o paying play,install, or rez costs or triggering any urther abilities.
Example : Te Corp cannot play Archived Memories i there areno cards in Archives.
Chain ReactionsI during the resolution o an ability another ability meetsits trigger condition, then a “chain reaction” is created. Teability that just met its trigger condition resolves immediately
Breaking SubroutinesTe Runner can only break the subroutines on a piece o iceduring step 3.1 o a run. I step 3.1 o a run is not reached, suchas when bypassing a piece o ice, then no subroutines on thatpiece o ice are broken.
Prevent/Avoid EffectsPrevent/Avoid effects take priority over conditional abilitiesthat would trigger rom whatever is being prevented or avoided,except when a conditional ability uses the word “additional.” An“additional” conditional ability occurs simultaneously with thetrigger condition and can be prevented/avoided along with thetrigger condition.
A prevent/avoid effect can only be used when the thing it ispreventing/avoiding is resolving.
Installing Multiple CardsWhenever multiple cards are installed by the same effect, thosecards are installed one at a time.
Example : Te Runner uses Mass Install to install three programs,including Scheherazade. Te Runner can install the Scheherazade rst, and then host the other two programs on it.
Advancing CardsA card is only considered to be advanced when the Corp spends1 click and 1 credit on the action o advancing it. Placingor moving advancement tokens to a card is not the same asadvancing it.
Example: Te Corporation plays Mushin-no-Shin , choosing toinstall an Oaktown Renovation. Because the three advancementtokens were placed on the card, however, the Corp does not gainany credits rom the ability on Oaktown Renovation.
Rezzing CardsTe Corporation may rez non-ice cards afer the Runnerapproaches any piece o ice. See step 2 o a run on page 13.
CostsMemory CostFor the purposes o card abilities, a program’s memory cost isnot considered an additional cost.
Example : Te Runner plays a est Run with no ree MU. He willhave to trash a program to make room or the program beinginstalled, since the memory cost o that program is not ignored asan additional cost.
Trashing as a CostI the cost o a paid ability requires a card to be trashed, thenpreventing that card rom being trashed prevents the cost rombeing paid and the paid ability does not resolve.
Example : Te Runner trashes Cortez Chip and has an installedSacricial Construct . I the Sacricial Construct is used to prevent the Cortez Chip rom being trashed, then the paid abilityon Cortez Chip does not resolve.
Additional CostsA player may decline to pay an additional cost, even i he or sheis able to do so.
Rez Cost & Play CostRez and play costs are ormulas that take into account anyeffects that modi y them. Tey are not just the printed numberon the card.
OtherChoosing CardsUnless otherwise noted, a card ability that requires a player tochoose a card can only affect installed cards.
Example : Te Corporation resolves a subroutine that says “ | TeRunner trashes 1 program.” Te Runner must trash one o his orher installed programs.
I an ability allows a player to choose multiple cards, all o thecards must be chosen be ore the effect resolves.
Example : Te Runner plays Satellite Uplink. Te Runner chooses
two cards to expose, and then both are exposed simultaneously.
HostingTe ollowing replaces the rules on hosting that appear in thecore set rulebook:
“Hosting” is the result o placing a card, counter, or token ontop o a card, creating a relationship between the host card andwhat is hosted. I a card allows other cards to be hosted on it,those cards must be hosted on the card when they are installed,unless a card says otherwise.
Hosted counters or tokens can be spent without affecting their
host. I a trigger cost requires one or more hosted counters ortokens, those counters or tokens are “spent” by being returnedto the token bank rom the card the ability appears on.
I a host is trashed or uninstalled, all cards, counters, and tokenshosted on it are also trashed. Tis cannot be prevented. I a hostCorp card is derezzed, all cards, counters, and tokens hosted onit remain hosted.
Te state o hosting is distinct (but not exclusive rom) the stateo installing. Most cards are hosted on another card when theyare installed. I a card is hosted but not installed, the card isinactive.
Destruction of ServersTe Corp cannot choose to destroy a server when installingcards; at least one card must be installed or other cards in orprotecting that server to be trashed.
I there are no cards installed in or protecting a remote server,then the server immediately ceases to exist. I a server ceasesto exist during a run, then the run ends afer any currentlyopen paid ability windows close. Unless the run has passed step4.4 o the timing structure o a run, it is not considered to besuccess ul or unsuccess ul.
I an optional innite loop is created (a player can choose tostop resolving the loop) during a run then the Runner must jack out unless another card ability prevents him or her romdoing so. I the Runner cannot jack out, then it is the Corp’sresponsibility to end the loop by letting the Runner continuethe run.
Approaching IceIce is always approached according to the position it occupies
protecting a server, ranging rom the outermost piece oice to the innermost piece o ice. I there is one piece o iceprotecting a server, that piece o ice is both the outermost andthe innermost piece o ice. Te Runner always starts at theoutermost position during a run. Afer passing a piece o ice,the Runner approaches the next innermost position, even i heor she has already approached it, or there is another piece o iceoutside o that position which has not yet been approached.
Example : During a run on R&D, the Corporation installs a new piece o ice in the outermost position protecting the server withan Architect . Te Runner does not encounter that new piece o iceduring this run because he has already passed that position.
Faceup AgendasFaceup agendas are not rezzed or unrezzed. I an agenda’s textinstructs the Corp to install it aceup, that agenda’s abilities areactive while it is installed
Facedown Runner CardsRunner cards that are installed or turned acedown do nothave a type or a subtype, and their abilities are not active. TeRunner can look at his or her acedown cards at any time. Ia acedown Runner card is trashed, it is turned aceup whenentering the heap. A Runner card turned acedown is notconsidered to be uninstalled.
Self-ReferencesI the card title re erenced on a card matches the title o thatcard, and the re erence is not plural and/or does not include anadditional modier (e.g., “other copies” or “all”), then the cardtitle only re ers to that copy o the card, and not to any othercopies o it.
I a card copies the text o another card, and the copied textincludes a sel -re erence, the copied text does not unctionunless it explicitly says so.
Example : Te Runner uses Media Blitz to copy the text o a
Private Security Force in the Runner’s score area. Because the sel -re erence in Private Security Force does not match the title o thecard Media Blitz, the ability has no effect.
Destruction of IceI a piece o ice is destroyed during an approach or encounterwith that piece o ice, then the ice is immediately passed andthe run continues afer any currently open paid ability windowsclose.
SubtypesA card has all o its subtypes when it is inactive.
Encountering IceWhen the Runner encounters a piece o ice, he or she mustresolve any abilities triggered by the encounter be ore he or shecan trigger paid abilities or break subroutines. See step 3 o arun on page 13.
Recurring CreditsRecurring credits are placed on a card when the card becomesactive, and can be used immediately. Recurring credits do notstack; a player replaces recurring credits up to the number listedon the card when his or her turn begins. Tis occurs at step 1.2o the turn, be ore any conditional abilities can be triggered.Recurring credits are only ever replaced up to their current
value, not removed.
SearchI a player is searching or a card, he or she must nd the card,i able. I a player is unable to ulll the condition o the search,then nothing happens, but the deck is always reshuffled.
Revealing CardsI a Corporation card is not visible to the Runner when it istrashed or discarded, then it is sent to Archives acedown. I aCorporation card is visible to the Runner when it is trashed ordiscarded, it is sent to Archives aceup.
I a specic card or card type in an inactive state is chosenby a card effect, the Corporation must show that card to theRunner without changing its aceup or acedown status. TeCorporation only reveals the card i it was acedown and theeffect says he must reveal it.
Negative StrengthIce and icebreakers can have negative strength.
Card MemoryWhenever a card is uninstalled, there is no memory o itsprevious state and it is considered to be a new copy o the card.
Infnite LoopsI a mandatory innite loop is created (a player cannot chooseto stop resolving the loop) then the player who is resolving theloop chooses a number. Te loop instantaneously resolves thatmany times, and then ends.
Example : Te Runner runs into a rezzed Wormhole. Teonly other piece o ice that is rezzed is a Wormhole, and so amandatory innite loop is created where each the Wormholes’subroutines resolves the other. Te Corporation chooses howmany times this loop occurs, say 2,157 times, and then theRunner continues the run.
Section 2: Card ClarifcationTis section addresses rules interactions with regard to speciccards. Te cards are sorted by set and then card number.
Core Set
1 Noise• Cards trashed by Noise’s ability are placed acedown in
Archives.
2 Demolition Run• Te Runner can trash an agenda accessed with Demolition
Run, instead o stealing it.
9 Djinn• Te Runner cannot move other installed programs to Djinn
when it is installed.
• When the Runner installs a program, he or she has the choiceo installing it directly into his rig or on Djinn. He cannotmove programs onto Djinn at a later point.
10 Medium• Be ore accessing cards rom R&D at step 4.5 o a run, the
Runner chooses how many cards he or she wants to accesswhen using Medium.
12 Parasite• Parasite cannot be hosted on Djinn. A card or counter canonly be hosted in one place at a time, and Parasite has therestriction that it must be installed on a piece o ice.
• I a piece o ice hosting Parasite is derezzed, the Parasitecontinues to collect virus tokens, but the hosting ice has nostrength while derezzed and there ore cannot be trashed byParasite unless it is rezzed again.
13 Wyrm• Te Runner can only use Wyrm to lower the strength o a
currently encountered piece o ice, and only i Wyrm is o
equal or higher strength than that ice.18 Account Siphon• Te Runner can choose to not use the ability on Account
Siphon when accessing cards, and i so does not take any tags.
• I the Runner ends up running success ully on another serverthan HQ, the “I success ul...” effect on Account Siphoncannot be triggered.
20 Forged Activation Orders• Te Corp cannot rez Akitaro Watanabe in response to a
Forged Activation Orders being played. Te effect o ForgedActivation Orders is immediately resolved unless preventedor avoided.
25 Femme Fatale• Femme Fatale does not need to match the strength o a piece
o ice in order to bypass it.
• Te Runner can spend the credit rom Cyber eeder to pay orthe bypass ability.
• I Femme Fatale is uninstalled, the Runner cannot bypass theice chosen by the Femme Fatale when it was installed; theability is no longer active since the card is no longer active.Even i that copy o Femme Fatale is re-installed, it is treatedas a ‘new’ copy and cannot bypass anything other than the icechosen when it was just installed.
26 Sneakdoor Beta• I Sneakdoor Beta is trashed during a run it initiated, the run
is still treated as a run on HQ i it is success ul.29 Bank Job• Te Runner can take credits rom Bank Job i he or she made
a success ul run on an empty server.
45 Net Shield• Net Shield can prevent a single point o net damage each
turn. It does not prevent all net damage rom a single source.
• Multiple Net Shields cannot prevent more damage.
47 Aesop’s Pawnshop• Aesop’s Pawnshop can only trash a single card each turn.
57 Aggressive Secretary • Te programs are trashed at the same time.
• Te Corporation cannot choose to trash the same programmore than once.
75 Chum• I the Runner jacks out immediately afer encountering a
Chum and not breaking its subroutine, the Runner does nottake any damage.
• Chum deals its net damage the rst time either o the
ollowing occur during an encounter with the next piece oice:1) step 3.1 o a run closes and there is an unbrokensubroutine on the piece o ice.2) step 3.1 o a run was skipped or did not resolve because theencounter/run ends (i 3.1 does not happen, no subroutinescan be broken). Tis applies even i the piece o ice has 0subroutines.
90 Tollbooth• I the Runner cannot pay 3< when encountering ollbooth,
then the run ends without the Runner paying any credits.
34 Sensei• Sensei only adds a single “End the run.” subroutine afer
all o the other subroutines on the next piece o ice, not asubroutine afer each subroutine on the ice.
41 Nerve Agent• Be ore accessing cards rom HQ at step 4.5 o a run, the
Runner chooses how many cards he or she wants to accesswhen using Nerve Agent.
45 Snitch• I the outermost piece o ice on a server is unrezzed, the
Runner can use Snitch to look at it and then decide to jackout be ore encountering it.
• I the expose effect is prevented, the Runner can still jack out.
48 Dinosaurus• I there is an icebreaker already installed on Dinosaurus, the
Runner can install a different icebreaker onto Dinosaurus,trashing the previously installed icebreaker.
• I the Runner has no ree MU but a Dinosaurus that is notcurrently hosting an icebreaker, he can install an icebreakeron Dinosaurus without trashing a program. Declaring wherea program is hosted is part o the install action, and so thememory cost o the program does not need to be taken intoaccount.
49 Personal Workshop• Te Runner may use the rst ability on Personal Workshop to
host a program or a piece o hardware on it. Cards hosted bythis ability are not installed, and there ore are inactive.
• Te Runner can pay to remove a power counter rom acard hosted on Personal Workshop as a paid ability. Aprogram installed rom Personal Workshop ollows all thenormal install rules; the Runner must trash already installedprograms to make room or the new one, i necessary.
• When there are no power counters on a program or a pieceo hardware that has a play restriction on it that cannot bemet (such as a Parasite with no rezzed ice to be hosted onor a console when there is already a console installed), thatprogram or piece o hardware is trashed instead o beinginstalled.
• I Personal Workshop is uninstalled, all cards hosted on it aretrashed and all counters on those cards are removed.
54 Sunset• When resolving Sunset, the ice must be rearranged in such a
way that the Runner knows which pieces o ice moved where.Te Corp cannot conceal the rearrangement o the ice.
79 Oversight AI• Playing Oversight AI does not give Haas-Bioroid:
Engineering the Future 1 < or an install.
• Oversight AI is treated as a condition counter, and is nolonger an operation, while it is active.
• Te Runner must pay 3 < i he or she is able to do so, even byspending temporary credits (such as bad publicity credits).
91 Red Herrings• I the Runner accesses an agenda rom R&D and does not pay
the additional cost to steal it, he or she does not reveal it tothe Corp.
97 Aggressive Negotiation
• Aggressive Negotiation can be played i the Corp scores anagenda during step 1.1 o his draw phase.
101 Archer• I the Corp has an overadvanced Braintrust scored and rezzes
Archer, or eiting Braintrust, Archer gains the discounted rezcost.
Genesis Cycle
11 Mandatory Upgrades• I Mandatory Upgrades is or eited, the Corp loses the
additional click immediately. Te Corp cannot choose tospend the additional click be ore the or eit, except as part ohis last action (at which point it has already been spent, andthere is nothing lef or the Corp to lose). Each player spendsclicks rom a pool o available clicks, and does not spend eachclick individually.
17 TMI• MI can be rezzed multiple times while the Runner
approaches it. iming structure o a run 2.3 is a window thatallows the approached piece o ice to be rezzed. Tere is nolimit to the number o times a Corp can rez an approachedpiece o ice i it is derezzed during this window.
24 e3 Feedback Implants• e3 Feedback Implants triggers itsel , so the Runner can
break all subroutines on a bioroid ice by paying credits aferspending a single click.
• I multiple subroutines are broken at the same time, e3Feedback Implants triggers once or each subroutine.
32 Fetal AI• Te Runner must pay the 2 < to steal Fetal AI rom Archives.
33 Trick of Light• rick o Light can only be used to move advancement tokens
• Oversight AI is trashed to the Archives i the host ice isuninstalled.
80 False Lead• False Lead cannot be or eited unless the Runner can lose 2
clicks.
• Te Corp can or eit 2 copies o False Lead at 1.1 to orce theRunner to lose 4 clicks. Te turn advances to the Runner’s
discard phase afer 1.2 resolves and the Runner has no clicks.
81 Disrupter• Disrupter cannot be used once the Corp has bid during
a trace attempt. It must be used when the trace is beinginitiated, and it prevents the entire trace be ore re-initiating itwith a base trace strength o 0.
83 Andromeda• When the Runner mulligans with Andromeda, he or she
draws another starting hand o 9 cards.
113 Midori
• Midori can only be used at timing structure o a run 2.• Ice that is swapped is installed, but the install cost o the ice
being swapped does not have to be paid.
• I the Runner exposes an ice with Snitch, Midori can stillswap the ice unless the Runner jacks out with Snitch.
• Midori must already be rezzed be ore the run in order to useher on the rst piece o ice protecting the server.
• Ice installed with Midori can be rezzed with the AmazonIndustrial Zone.
Creation and Control
21 Awakening Center• Ice hosted on Awakening Center can be rezzed through other
card effects, but a rezzed piece o ice cannot be encounteredunless it was rezzed by Awakening Center.
• Only one piece o hosted ice on Awakening Center can beencountered per run.
• Ice on Awakening Center are in the server and do not countas ice protecting the server.
34 Scavenge• Te Runner can trash a program as an additional cost, and
then reinstall that same program.
• As part o the install action, the Runner can trash installedprograms.
54 Same Old Thing• Te Runner cannot use Same Old Ting to play priority
events.
Spin Cycle
2 Pawn• Pawn can move onto a piece o ice hosting another caïssa ,
but other caïssa programs cannot move onto a piece o icehosting Pawn.
• Te Runner cannot choose the Pawn that is being trashed asthe program to install with Pawn because the trash and installare part o the same effect.
3 Rook • Rook can only move to another server i there is another
piece o ice in the same “row” as the ice Rook is hosted on,counting up rom the innermost piece o ice protecting eachserver.
• Rook can be hosted on any piece o ice i it is already hostedon another non-ice card.
21 Bishop• Bishop only moves rom a piece o ice protecting a central
server to a piece o ice protecting a remote server, and vice versa.
• Bishop can be hosted on any piece o ice i it is already hostedon another non-ice card.
24 Recon• Te Runner can jack out the rst time he or she encounters a

Where is an upgrade installed in a remote server?An upgrade is installed in a remote server in the same positionas an agenda or asset. Te Runner should not be able to tell

Yes. Programs on London Library are installed, the Library’seffect is a conditional ability that resolves at the end o each othe Runner’s turns. So Sacricial Construct will delay the trash,but London Library will attempt to trash it again at the end othe Runner’s next turn.
Can the Runner use Immolation Script during a run in whichEater was used to break a subroutine? No. Eater stops the Runner rom accessing any individual cards,and so there is no access to replace with Immolation Script.
