Raeder’s Message Of Slugs and Snails Gardeners everywhere seem to be suffering from slugs devouring their newly planted out seedlings, in which so much hope has been invested. Sowing seeds and seeing them grow on to flower or provide a fresh crop of vegetables is one of summer’s pleasures. So it is frustrating when poor germination, slugs and snails combine to frustrate one's hopes, as there is no really effective antidote. Going out with a torch at dusk I found that the real harm was being done by really small slugs that were difficult to see get hold of. Wherever one looks we seem to be facing an increasing number of intractable problems with pests and diseases. Our ash trees are just one species that are threatened. A friend in Majorca told us recently that the palm trees throughout the island are being killed by some bug. But it is not only in the countryside that problems proliferate, every aspect of our society faces growing difficulties. There is no easy answer to these problems, but one thing I do know is that the Bible warns us that when people neglect to honour God and his ways, society will be troubled by increasing problems with all areas of its life including its agriculture. When Jesus taught us to pray, he told us to begin by asking that our Father in heaven should be hallowed. In doing so he was teaching us that acknowledging God as our Father is
our first priority in life. And that makes sense when we recognise that not only is he the source of all that is good and right but he is also the source of life. One of Jesus' stories concerns two men who built houses, one build on secure foundations while the other built on sand. All was well until they were struck by a flood following a storm. The house on the sand was washed away but the house on the rock stood firm. Having painted this vivid picture, Jesus said that if we hear his teaching but do not act upon it we are like the man who built his house on the sand. We are only like the wise man who built on the rock when we hear his teaching and act upon it, and that begins by honouring God and his ways. It is easy to dismiss the Old Testament notion that problems result when we neglect to honour and respect God and his ways, but Jesus invariably upheld the wisdom of the Old Testament as God's word. So I have no doubt that we should see the difficulties we face collectively, both in Britain and the wider world, as warnings that it is time to acknowledge that we have ignored God; we must ask his forgiveness and seek to learn how to hallow his name.

Farewell to Peter Craig
It is with sadness that I write that Peter left us for his heavenly home on the evening of Sunday 17th June after an illness of nearly 18 months. Peter came to live in Beckington in 2007 following our marriage and soon became a part of the community, generously sharing his IT and other technical skills in a variety of ways. Within the life of St George’s, he regularly played drums or bass guitar, helped to organise Parish events and hosted a weekly home group whilst I was still working at the surgery. He
was talented and resourceful, well organised and impeccably tidy, qualities that I still aspire to! He will be particularly remembered for his winsome and gentle manner, thoughtfulness and kindness, coupled with an astonishing inner strength and determination. I could never tire of hearing the dulcet tones of his lilting Northern Irish accent. Peter was a most wonderful husband, Dad and Granddad and will be greatly missed by family and friends alike but remembered with gratitude for the ways in which he enriched our lives and for his witness to the love and faithfulness of God throughout the challenges of life. Thank you for all the prayers and messages of love and support that have helped so much to sustain us through our journey. A service of thanksgiving and burial will be held at St George’s Church at 12.30pm on 2nd July.

Lullington & Orchardleigh
My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the Chelsea Flower Show this year. The immaculate
gardens and the superb floral displays were breathtaking all no doubt the result of painstaking thought and care. It is certainly the place to go for ideas and inspiration. Gardening is hard work, particularly if you have a large garden but it does have its benefits too. For my part it’s the wild life in the garden that I enjoy. If you walk along a street you will see a variety of gardens, most of them will be beautifully tended, an indication of the great care taken, but others less so. There are many references in the Bible of gardens, olive groves and vine yards and planting and sowing seeds. Probably the most well known is the parable of the sower and of the seed falling on the poor ground and the good ground. The seed (God’s word) is all right. It’s what we do with it that makes all the difference. As the parable concludes, many hear God’s word but show no interest, some show interest for a while, but are soon distracted by life’s ups and downs and others hear God’s word and take the trouble to study and understand it. Life is like that. God offers the seed. What we do about it can result in
anything from a barren backyard to a market garden of our finest dreams.

Readers might be interested to know there will be a lunar eclipse during the night of 27/28th July. The moon rises at 21.07 (BST) on the 27th and is at its highest in the sky at 01.15 (BST) on the morning of 28th July. The Moon at its highest will still be relatively low in the sky (15 degrees). This means we will be viewing it through a lot of the Earth's atmosphere and this can enhance the red hue often seen with a lunar eclipse. The Moon will be in 'totality' when it rises. This event might provide some impressive photo opportunities.

Standerwick, Berkley and Beckington W.I.
On 7th June our new President, June Saffin, announced that our speaker on ‘Fun, gentle exercise and audience participation’ was unable to be with us so instead we could relax and observe Bill Bailey giving a science demonstration. His talk was entitled ‘Adventures in Science’ and he compared our kitchens to a science laboratory. He explained how microwaves, pressure cookers, fridges, cookers and vacuum cleaners worked, bringing science into our everyday lives. He fascinated us as he separated the yolk of an egg from the white with a squashed empty plastic bottle explaining there was no such thing as suction only the weight of the air being pushed out creating a vacuum. It was interesting to be reminded how science is part of our everyday lives as we heard why apples go brown when cut and how bread rises. Later this month six members will be visiting Stoberry House and Gardens near Wells and our summer outing is a boat trip at Poole Harbour followed by a visit to Compton Acres Gardens. At our next meeting on 5th July, Penny Windsor is ‘Finding fun in Poetry.’ Our members are asked to write their own poem about the W.I. On 2nd August we are having a shared supper and social evening. Do come and join us in the Memorial Hall, Beckington at 7.30.

Mothers’ Union
In June Sue Martin, wife of Rev Rob Martin our rural dean, spoke to our MU group about their time spent in Kenya. In 2008 Rob went to Marsabit, with the missionary agency Crosslinks, to become bishop of an area just smaller than England. Sue accompanied him on this challenging venture, and found herself very much involved with the Mothers' Union. In many African countries, MU plays a vitally important role in the church and the local area, and despite the negative attitudes towards women, many are learning skills to become more self-sufficient and help their families and communities.
The July meeting will be our annual cream tea fund-raising event, when we raise money for the Summer Appeal. The tea will be held at Lahs Place Hall on Weds 4th July starting at 2.30. There will be a bring and buy stall, raffle and cakes, and MU greetings cards will be on sale. Please come along and enjoy tea and a chat.
There will be no meeting in August but we resume on 5th September when we will hear about the work of street pastors.

Beckington School
Our wonderful Year 4 children will soon be leaving the school. It hardly seems possible that their time at Beckington is nearly up – but we know they have been well prepared for this next step thanks to the support of our lovely small school.
This month for the school we have enjoyed a fantastic Sports Day – with children from every year trying their hardest in a whole host of different races. The PSA paid for Active Trowbridge to come into the school in the morning before the Sports Day event and each class spent a wonderful time bouncing and racing across an inflatable obstacle course. After a day of activity the day culminated with a visit from an ice-cream van. A treat kindly paid for by the PSA and much enjoyed by all the children! Later the same week, the children returned to the school in the evening, dressed in their pyjamas for our annual bedtime story event. Teachers (also dressed in their night-wear!) read each class a story, whilst the PSA served hot-chocolates and milkshakes.
In other news: - The PSA Cream Tea and spring trail event was a success. Scones, cream and jam were enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who took part. - The Reception children recently enjoyed a lovely trip along the Beckington loop in the sunshine. - Blackbird class were visited by artist Jenny Graham, who helped them produce some very special pieces of
art work, using leaves and natural materials. - Five of our Year 2 children got the opportunity to go to Selwood Academy to try out some new sports activities. - The whole school got involved in walking, riding, and scooting to school – and the visit by the smoothie bike was very much enjoyed! - We’ve welcomed our new cohort of Reception children and their parents into the school for their induction days. We look forward to welcoming them to our school community next year!
As we approach the end of this academic year, we look forward to some of our most popular activities – including the grand final of Beckington’s Got Talent and our annual whole school trip to the beach.
In sadder news for the school, Ann House, our phenomenal School Business Manager is retiring. Mrs House has been with Beckington School for an astonishing 25 years! We wish her every happiness in her retirement and thank her for the support she has given the school over a quarter of a century!
We also wish our leaving Year 4 pupils every success in the next stage of their school life – we will miss them all. Finally, this will be my last time writing this article. I have greatly enjoyed sharing news from the school with all of you. On behalf of the Year 4 parents, I would like to thank Mr Vincent and the whole school for giving our children such a wonderful start in their education. Emily Denne

Berkley School
Just before the half-term, the pupils were regaled by a local author Sarah Hill, who spent the day with us and led writing sessions with the children. On the day they returned to school after the half-term, it appeared that Berkley School had been visited by some sort of weird creature, what with debris such as bones and feathers and slime strewn all over the school site. All the pupils were then vertically grouped and had to complete various challenges such as playing detective to work out what had visited the school and why, culminating in drawings and stories linked to the mystery. A great time was had by all! The Frome Writing competition has now been judged, with two Berkley children winning for their categories and two others being placed in the top three.
Here is the poem that was runner-up and was written by Oliver S in Year 3:
You’re as useless as… A bucket with a hole A mine without any coal A key with a rusty lock A tick without a tock You’re as useless as… A tap without any water A mum whose lost her daughter A clock that’s lost its tick A lolly you cannot lick You’re as useless as… A tv that doesn’t turn on A dream that’s finally gone A worm that’s slimy And a poem that doesn’t rhymeee

Head of Studies goes academic with Careers’ Week. Our children’s learning had been fully enriched during our career’s week, with a huge array of experiences and opportunities all linked to future jobs, careers and professional pathways, but underpinned by the school’s Building Learning Programme which looks at all those essential learning skills which we can use and develop throughout our lives.
• Ducklings were visited by a veterinary assistant • Hedgehogs have become artists, authors and vets themselves • Rabbits have been looking at the role of politicians and have written letters to
the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson • Otters and been considering people who help us and met a reiki practitioner • Badgers have interviewed a journalist, a radio producer, a translator, a teacher
and someone who does the ironing • Squirrels have been thinking about non-stereotypical jobs • Owls have taken part in Question and Answer sessions looking at three
different career paths, and looked at what a CV covers • Eagles have spent time investigating how we can improve our skills and were
able to take part in the hugely successful Careers’ Fair

Considerate Parking
Can I please bring the following to the attention of everyone who organises or attends events at Beckington Village Hall and has to park on the road. I live down Bath Road past the Village Hall and several times have returned home when events are on and cars have been parked on both sides of Bath Road, in the narrow part and on the junction. This leaves about 2 inches either side of my car for me to get past. If an ambulance or fire engine was needed they would be unable to get through. The Highway Code states ‘DO NOT stop or park opposite or within 10 metres of a junction’ Perhaps traffic cones could be purchased and put out by that junction at busy times to prevent parking. There is plenty of space further down the road, along the Trowbridge road or down towards the village. Hoping to thank everyone for their cooperation

On the 1st July I will be resuming my councillor role at both District and County. The reason for my leave of absence has still not been resolved and my husband continues with his journey towards feeling well again.
I will therefore need to be much more selective than previously on what I able to realistically achieve. The days of devoting long hours and working every single day on council matters is not sustainable and not what I really should be doing. A lifestyle balance is key, and when needs be family must come first.
I have been in contact with the parish councils in my area and asked that we agree what the immediate priorities are within the community. With that information I will be in a position to focus on these and do my utmost to bring them to a satisfactory conclusion. I am obviously aware of some matters that are still moving forward and I will be in a position to follow these up straight away.
The one thing I can say confidently is that I will always strive to do my best.
Regards
Linda Oliver Mendip District Councillor & Somerset County Councillor

Beckington Memorial Hall
The Quiz and Curry night proved an enjoyable and entertaining evening and over £500 was made for Memorial Hall funds. Much thanks are due to all who helped and came along, but, especially to Debs Byrne who did all the cooking and David Norman who masterminded an excellent quiz. It is hoped to put on a similar evening after the New Year. Our next event will be the return of the Bonfire and Fireworks evening on Saturday November 3rd. Help in running this will be much appreciated. Many thanks are also due to Wessex Water for cleaning and tidying the Play area and to Phil Hillman for mending the climbing frame. We welcome Simon Pritchard and Sian Watson to the Committee and are still hoping to have representatives from other village institutions in the near future. We are trying to trace the ground supports for the goalposts on the Bath Road edge of the Field and would like to hear from anyone who could loan us a metal detector! Winners of the 200 Club Draw for May were – £40(154) Lainey Sweeney and £20(170) Sue Brown and for June were – £40(85) Elaine Leeder and £20(103) Peter West. The Beckington Memorial Hall 200 Club is registered with the Mendip DC licensing Dept. Regis. No. LN/009406098.
