Improving mobile users’ broadband experience

Situation OverviewTbaytel, Northern Ontario’s leading telecommunications provider, is committed to delivering the right user experience for its customers. As the largest municipally owned network carrier in Canada with many of its communities separated by thousands of kilometres, the needs of Tbaytel and its customers are unique.With the recent surge in the

adoption of smart devices, continuous growth in mobile data traffic triggered a rapid increase in users’ wireless expectations and shifting consumer behaviors.

Encountering technical issues within Thunder Bay’s core urban areas, Tbaytel partnered with Ericsson, the supplier of their existing 4G HSPA+ technology. Ericsson was tasked to assist in an accelerated rollout of a network optimization strategy to address the rapid data growth in the key urban centres. Ericsson delivered a full range of services including technology deployment, network transformation, and network optimization to achieve the operator’s business goals in order to assure a positive end-user experience.

The results were faster mobile broadband speeds, limited disturbances and an increase in

capacity that satisfied the users’ demand for a reliable data-driven service.

Challenge“We have a deep commitment to our community and providing the highest level of service to our customers is a driving force and our primary goal,” says John Barch, Vice-President Operations Tbaytel. “In order to meet both consumer needs and our own high internal expectations, we turned to Ericsson to further enhance the quality of our service to achieve our network performance goals.”

SolutionThrough a series of test drives to identify critical areas in need of network improvement, Ericsson was able to provide Tbaytel with a snapshot of the current network capacity and capabilities.

An accelerated plan for resolution was then developed in collaboration with the carrier that lead to a swift improvement in the network’s coverage and data speeds. The efficient rollout of the new technology combined with investment in infrastructure has secured a viable pathway to future growth and greater long-term network stability in the region.

More than 20 new sites have been installed throughout Thunder Bay to deliver high capacity and quality service to the end user. Previous high traffic buildings lacking coverage are now equipped with in-building cell sites to meet users’ demand for a high capacity mobile network.

Looking aheadWith Northern Ontario’s largest 4G Network, Tbaytel’s consumers now have the ability to receive coverage in urban centres, transfer data at higher-speeds and have secured a NET QB of 99.48 accessibility. The investment in Tbaytel’s network has resulted in an exponential growth in overall customer satisfaction. This has led to improvement in the mobile users’ broadband experience resulting in greater usage, subscriber loyalty and improved brand reputation.
