President's Address
Professor Paul Ching-Wu CHU
Mr Pro-Chancellor, Chairman, Council and Court
Members, honorary graduates, parents, graduates,
faculty, ladies and gentlemen:
Congregation is the single most emotional day
in our year. It is a day of tears and cheers. Tears
of joy, tears over partings, and cheers for a new
life's journey.
For students, it marks a fruitful end to
three years of hard work. For parents, there
is tremendous pride and joy as their children
begin a new journey. For teachers, there is deep
professional satisfaction in seeing another crop
of eager, fully-primed students marching off to
productive employment or higher learning.
As university president, I see it as evidence ,
that we are doing a fine job preparing our young
people to be society's new scholars and scientists,
its new contributors and its shareholders.
Graduation marks a turning point, not an end.
In the information age, learning is not only an
essential tool for survival, but a lifelong attitude.
Those who continue to learn will do well. Those
who don't, won't. There is a little well-known
secret to success: love what you do and do what
you love. The greatest blessing in life is being
passionate about your work, whatever form it
takes.
As we celebrate the University's ISth
anniversary, we look back with pride on the year's
accomplishments. By most measures, HKUST
ranks among the top universities in the world. In
technology, we are ranked 1 7 ~ among the world's
top 100 universities. We have gained international
recognition across different disciplines. To cite
some of our prominent achievements: Prof Wu
Yundong of Chemistry was elected Academician of
the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof Wang Ning
won the Achievement in Asia Award in Physics;
Prof Chan Chak Keung of Chemical Engineering
received the Asian Young Aerosol Scientist Award;
Prof Pun Ngai of Social Science is the first Asian
winner of the C Wright Mills award for her book;
and our joint Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA
program is consistently ranked among top three
in the world by the Financial Times. Our per
faculty research funding has been unsurpassed
for a record 14 years among tertiary institutions in
Hong Kong. The list is long and impressive.
Looking forward, we have already rolled out
our plans for the next 15 years. Our Institute for
Advanced Study took off with a resounding launch
by Professor Stephen Hawking. We are rigorously
proceeding with the pursuit of research excellence
in strategic areas; providing quality education in
our transition to a 4-year program; establishing a
new school of interdisciplinary studies; building
research and teaching programs on the Mainland;
and internationalization of our student body. The
success of these initiatives will be crucial to our
progress for the next 15 years. We will persist in
realizing our dream of making HKUST a global
intellectual center.
4 1 PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR PAUL CHING-WU CHU
Leaders are visionaries who stand higher, see
farther and make the world better. We expect that
of our faculty. We also expect that of our new
graduates.
Go forth, children of HKUST. Embrace your
future with curiosity, energy and purpose. The
torch has been passed to you, a new generation
of leaders. When you succeed, we all succeed.
But no matter how far you travel, fly our flag with
pride. Above all, stay connected with your proud
intellectual home, the Hong Kong University of
Science and Technology. Thank you, and good
luck!

Professor Hau L LEE Citation
Logistics is a key industry in Hong Kong. In a city
of commerce like Hong Kong, the movement of
goods and senices is just as vital as the movement
of people. As the logistical hub in south China,
we ignore Professor Lee Hau Leung and his
work at our own peril. He is widely recognized
as the world leader in the study of supply chain
management. We would do well to listen to and
learn from him. But today we are primarily here
to honour him.
Prof Lee is in fact one of us. He was Hong
Kong-born, Hong Kong-bred and half Hong
Kong-educated. He obtained a Bachelor of Social
Sciences degree in economics and statistics from
the University of Hong Kong, going on to broaden
his international perspectives with a Master of
Science degree in Operational Research from
the London School of Economics, culminating
with a doctorate in the same discipline from the
prestigious Wharton School at the University
of Pennsylvania. He is now Thoma Professor
of Operations, Information and Technology
at Stanford University. Academic degrees and
responsibilities, however, do not tell half the
story of who he is and what he does that is so
important. In logistics, he is big, toweringly big.
No ordinary ivory tower academic, Prof Lee is
the founder and director of the Stanford Global
Supply Chain Management Forum, an industry-
academic consortium dedicated to advancing the
theory and practice of supply chain management
and global logistics system design. His specialties
include inventory planning, manufacturing
strategy, and the use of wireless technology in
logistics. His writings have been widely published
in learned journals such as Management Science,
Operations Research, Harvard Business Review,
European Journal of Operational Research,
Naval Research Logistics and Sloan Management
Research etc. He was the past editor-in-chief
of Management Science and has served on the
editorial boards of many prestigious related
academic and industry journals.
His theoretical insights and breakthroughs
have been validated by consultancy work for
such multinational giants as Hewlett-Packard,
Sun Microsystems, Apple Computer, General
Motors, Accenture, Lucent Technologies, and
Eli Lilly & Company. In fact, he has consulted
extensively worldwide with private and public
sector establishments, including many in Hong
Kong. He is also on the board and advisory board
of several international logistics and supply chain
software companies. Across Europe, Asia and
America, many executives have benefited from
training workshops he conducted on supply chain
management and global logistics.
His name will forever be linked with the so-
called "Bull Whip Effect", a concept he popularized
which describes how the seemingly minor
acts of a trading partner can create significant
information distortions along the supply chain. In
response, he has proposed a range of management
solutions such as eProcurement, Vendor-Managed
Inventory, Cross-Enterprise Integration and Total
Supply Chain Visibility to offset the Bull Whip

Distinction in Operations Research from the
Canadian Operations Research Society in 2003.
He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of
Management Science and Operations Research
in 2005 and Fellow of the Manufacturing and
Service Operations Management Society in 2001.
He is currently the President of the Production
and Operations Management Society. His article
entitled "The Triple-A Supply Chain" won second
place in the Mckinsey Award for Best Paper in the
Harvard Business Review in 2004.
Prof Lee's high-impact work takes logistical
management and operational efficiency to a new
level, thereby enhancing customer satisfaction
and reliability in the managing the flow of goods
and services. It lies at the heart of a successful
modern global business operation. He is casting a
long shadow on the logistics industry and beyond.
His reputation and stature in this part of the world
are sure to grow with the unleashing of explosive
economic energies on the mainland. Today, we
welcome home Hong Kong's native son who has
made good. Today we celebrate his relentless
inventiveness and crucial contributions to one of
our pivotal industries. By honoring Prof Lee today,
we are also paying tribute to the vital role of
logistics in modern business operations. He makes
growth more likely for our businesses, and in so
doing, he ensures our economic prosperity.

Doctor of Science honoris causa
Professor Alan G MACDIARMID Citation
Professor Alan G MacDiarmid is no ordinary
scientist. He is the 2000 Nobel Laureate for
Chemistry and the International Scientist for the
year 2001. But he is more. He has a big heart
for humanity and an insatiable appetite for new
discoveries.
Prof MacDiarmid's life is a storybook success.
It is an outstanding example for young people
today. He grew up in grinding poverty in New
Zealand, where a hot bath was his only weekly
luxury, and where, rain or shine, he walked to
school barefooted. As a boy, he earned money first
with his own early morning milk round and later
his evening paper route. But he is in possession
of two secret ingredients to his success: a loving
family and an inquiring mind. Prof MacDiarmid
soared to the sky on the wings of both.
He considers his home life growing up in New
Zealand to have been the single most important
factor in his later success. Hardship taught him to
be self-reliant. He learned to do the best with his
God-given abilities. He taught himself chemistry
by borrowing a library book called "The Boy
Chemist" which he continuously renewed for a
year until he understood its content and carried
out most of its experiments.
Unlike some world-class scientists, Prof
MacDiarmid loves teaching and continues to do
so until this day, at the young age of 79. He is a
perfect professor for the university community
with his twin interest in teaching and research.
Prof MacDiarmid has two qualities much
admired and practiced by Chinese people: He
never forgets his roots, keeping in touch with his
native New Zealand and people back home even
though he moved to the US in the mid-1950's. He
values his close-knit family and the importance
of interpersonal relationships. He believes that
"science is people" and that the pursuit of science
occurs most productively through discussion of
ideas with one's colleagues. That explains why his
greatest triumphs have been collaborative efforts.
He was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry
with a Japanese fellow chemist and an American
physicist. He believes in inter-disciplinary
collaboration, seizing on ideas wherever he finds
them. A true egalitarian, he respects the people
who work on his team, not "for" him, but "with"
him. Thus he has been able to get the most out
of his assistants who completely identify with the
objective of his research.
Prof MacDiarmid has been called the father of
"synthetic metals". His discovery in the field of
conducting polymers has far-reaching applications
to our information age, as it is closely related
to the development in molecular electronics
which will dramatically increase the speed and
reduce the size of our computers. His creation of
nanomaterials leads to the development of the
new field of "nanoelectronics". It has opened up
world-wide research in chemistry and physics
on the interrelationships between the chemistry,
the structure and the electronic properties of
semiconducting materials. The technological

applications of these materials are numerous and Mr Pro-Chancellor, on behalf of the Council
diverse, from rechargeable batteries, corrosion of the Hong Kong University of Science and

actively involved in research into various types of
renewable energy, especially bio-ethanol and bio-
diesel. Given the recent sharp spikes in fuel prices
and the shortage of fuel supply, his scientific
work is both timely and of vital importance to the
global economy.
Born in New Zealand, but with allegiance
to the world at large, he has participated in
the establishment of laboratories across four
continents - in his native New Zealand, USA,
Korea, Brazil, India, and most interestingly
for us, in China. He continues to extend his
benevolent global influence through the non-
profit MacDiarmid Institute for Global Research
Excellence.
Prof MacDiarmid has a truly international
education, with degrees from the University of
New Zealand, the University of Wisconsin in
the US and Cambridge University in England. A
former Fullbright Scholar, he holds the James
Von Her Distinguished Chair in Science and
Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas
and the Blanchard Chair in chemistry at the
University of Pennsylvania. He is the recipient
of countless awards and honorary degrees, and
the author of over 600 research papers and 20
patents. To his fellow scientists, he is a tip-top
interdisciplinary scientist. To the rest of the
world, he is an international humanist who works
wonders with ordinary substances like wood or
farm waste. He is a friend of the earth, and a hero
to its inhabitants.
HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS 1 13
Doctor of Social Sciences honoris cama
Dr the Hon TUNG Chee Hwa Citation
Dr Tung Chee Hwa has the unique distinction of
being Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's
first Chief Executive. He will be remembered as
the Chief Executive who shepherded the grand
concept of "One Country, Two Systems" into
reality. He will also be remembered for leading
the restructuring of Hong Kong's economy for
sustainable economic growth.
Dr Tung took the helm amidst skepticism about
the concepts of "One Country, Two Systems" and
"Hong Kong People Governing Hong Kong with a
High Degree of Autonomy". From the outset, he
emphasized the importance of the "two systems"
aspect of the concept, ensuring that our freedoms
are protected, our way of life preserved, and
the rule of law upheld. He secured the smooth
continuity of our splendid civil service via the
"through train" arrangements. And he governed
with inclusiveness and tolerance.
Today, the successful implementation of "One
Country, Two Systems" is plain for all to see.
The transitional challenges were made more
difficult by the economic tremors of the Asian
financial crisis, and the subsequent burst of the
asset bubble. At the same time, with increasing
globalization, Hong Kong's cost structure was no
longer competitive. Hong Kong needed to move
up the value chain as a premier service provider.
With China's progressive opening up, Hong Kong
was losing its status as the only "gateway to
China".
In short, Hong Kong needed to restructure,
redefine and reposition itself in a new and
evolving environment. Foreseeing the economic
advantages to Hong Kong brought about by
"One Country, Two Systems", he leveraged these
advantages into making Hong Kong the primary
financial, logistic and business services provider
to a rapidly growing Mainland economy.
He led the Government to initiate, build and
shape the CEPA program, and in 2003 successfully
secured the Central Government's support for
this win-win arrangement. Today, CEPA and
the various economic restructuring initiatives
underpin our economic foundation.
Dr Tung will be remembered for his dedication
to education. Acting on his conviction that
education is key to Hong Kong's continuing
success and the pathway for upward social
mobility, his administration invested heavily to
improve Hong Kong's primary and secondary
education, the benefits of which are now bubbling
to the surface. He promoted the concept of life-
long learning, and also set a target that by year
2007 sixty per cent of our senior secondary school
leavers should have a place at full-time sub-degree
and undergraduate levels. This target had in fact
been exceeded by 2005.
But one of his greatest visionary policies was
the support of Hong Kong's university education.
Local universities, including HKUST, had a loyal
friend in Dr Tung. He will always live in our
16 1 HONOWWV DEGREE CITATIONS
institutional memory as an ardent believer in
our ambitions to bring high quality to higher
education.
He guided Hong Kong along the path of
transformation into a knowledge-based society,
thereby putting UST among others centre-
stage in this visionary undertaking. Dr Tung's
administration threw its weight behind our far-
reaching blueprint for raising the bar of academic
excellence. Today, all our institutions of higher
learning can boast their own stellar achievements.
Notably, UST has gained global recognition as
a leading international university. We are most
recently ranked the 17th among the world's top
100 technology universities, and our Kellogg-
HKUST EMBA program has been consistently
ranked among the top three in the world. As
our first Chancellor, Dr Tung will be proud that
we have come this far that fast. He will also be
pleased to know that greater things are being
unleashed in our 15-year Strategic Plan.
These are all dreams that Dr Tung had
cherished, making it possible for us to hatch
our plans and engineer Hong Kong's hi-tech
future. This is why his presence today, as a
visionary leader who believes that education is
the prescription for prosperity, is majestically
fitting for our congregation.
His foresight in turning Hong Kong into a
knowledge society fit for the 21st century is coming
into focus, one student at a time, one project at a
time, one dream at a time. We honor him as a
visionary leader in the strategic development of
higher education.
Dr Tung continues to serve the country on a
bigger stage as Vice-chairman of the National
People's Consultative Conference. With his
international credentials, his leader's eye-view
of Hong Kong and strategic understandings
of the Mainland, Dr Tung's sage advice is just
what the nation needs. His elevation to the Vice-
chairmanship is a high honour for Hong Kong and
a platform for his greater service to the nation.
Mr Pro-chancellor, I have the great honour
to present to you, on behalf of the University,
Dr Tung Chee Hwa, a true son of Hong Kong and
proud visionary father of its first SAR Government,
and current Vice-chairman of Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference, for the degree
of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.

Mr She pays great attention to moral education, talking to students who have personal issues and behavioral problems. He reminds students of the axiom of "steering clear of evil deeds though they be small; ploughing into good deeds though they appear trivial". He also places six Chinese characters before his students "/J\ . /%j . . ,& % ?j - @" to encourage them not to take small matters lightly.
In light of his enthusiasm for education and inspiration and dedication to students, the University is pleased to present Mr She Ki Poon with the Award for My Most Influential Teacher.
Address by the Graduate Representative of the School of Engineering
AN Nan BEng in Electronic Engineering
President Chu, distinguished guests, professors,
parents, and fellow graduates:
Good afternoon. With heartfelt gratitude and
nostalgia, I am deeply honored to stand here, to
represent all my fellow graduates of engineering
school, saying thank you and goodbye at the same
time.
Today is a special day. It is the epilogue of an
undergraduate career, and the prologue to the
next chapter of our life, signifying both an end
and a new beginning. On this memorable day, let
me recollect my fond university life at HKUST and
share my indelible memories with you.
Three years ago, we set foot for the first
time on this beautiful campus. What we found
is a fountain of knowledge and a garden of life
experiences.
We will never forget the unbelievable number
of books in our professors' office which bended
the bookshelves. We will never forget the scene
in the beautiful but solemn library with scholars
seriously reading everywhere. We will also never
forget the coffee during group discussions at
the cafeteria and the nightlong tinkering in the
labs. Our devoted professors have passed on
their knowledge and even their life experiences
to us unreservedly. Their patient guidance and
encouragements have led us to explore and
innovate every aspect of life. What we have learnt
from them is not only technical knowledge, but
also how to be a person, a person for the future.
We are much indebted to them. From all of us: a
big thank you.
HKUST is the bridge between education and
society. Here we learn to grow into mature young
persons, full of energy and aspirations, ready
to contribute to society. The hall life experience
taught us how to live in harmony with others,
and independently by ourselves. The teamwork
experiences taught us how to organize a team and
develop team spirit to achieve the best results,
where 1 + 1 is more than 2. Extra-curricular activities taught us how to turn a plan into reality,
how to confidently solve problems, and most
importantly, how to increase our self-awareness.
HKUST is a big stage, where we are free to express
ourselves. HKUST is also like an uncle looking
over our shoulders, as we learn the true meaning
of life.
Time flies. Now, three years have passed.
With the knowledge and experiences HKUST
has given us, with a diploma in our hands, and
the expectation from professors, university and
entire society, we are ready for the new chapter.
Whatever the time, whatever the place, whatever
we do, we will always bear in mind that we
are children of HKUST. In us we will carry her
spirit. Today we are honored by HKUST, the best
university of Hong Kong and Asia. Tomorrow,
by our hard work and our will power, we will
honor our beloved university, the HKUST. Let's
treasure the sweet encounters here and take our
responsibility to explore and shape the future.
Thank you very much.
26 1 ADDRESSES BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATWES
Address by the Graduate Representative of the School of Business and Management
LEUNG, Sin Yeng Winnie BBA in Global Business and Finance
Dr Chan, President Chu, guests, professors and
fellow graduates:
Earlier this year, as I saw secondary school
students coming in for interviews, I simply could
not believe that only three years ago I was one
of them. At that time, graduation seemed so far
away. But today, my mind is full of memories of
the past three years.
Our school has given us the direction to learn,
to acquire skills and to prepare us for the journey
of life. It has provided us with the opportunities
and environment to grow, to discover ourselves,
and to learn to be compassionate, caring human
beings. One of the most memorable activities
I have taken part here is the AIDS awareness
program jointly organized with the Red Cross.
Twelve of us from UST planned the program
and went to Yunnan, on the mainland to learn
about AIDS education. After our return, we held
workshops in HK in various secondary schools to
spread the message of AIDS awareness.
Our teachers have helped shape each of us
into individuals, each special in his own way. Our
talent, be it in sports, music, or the academic field,
has been shaped and enhanced by the school. In
this respect, the school has provided us with the
foundation to go beyond our own limitations. We
have also been taught that what is important is
how we look at ourselves and not how others look
at us. We have learnt that it is better to be a person
with values, rather than being a person who is
successful.
Many people spend their school days yearning
to graduate , and the rest of their lives waxing
lyrical about them. Much knowledge has been
passed to us at school, but what has really left a
mark are the tears and laughter we shared while
doing schoolwork and spending countless hours
together in extracurricular activities and volunteer
services.
Many people have crossed our paths throughout
these years and many mentors have played a part
in shaping us. We are indebted to each and every
one of them but our deepest gratitude must go to
our parents and teachers. They have always tried
to put things in perspective for us. They are the
ones who have pushed us to reach farther, telling
us to believe in ourselves. They are the ones we
could always fall back on in times of failure and
distress.
This afternoon, as we move on to a new stage
in our lives, we would like to say a big "thank
you" to the many people who have made us what
we are today.
Now we can go forward, for as Robert Browning
said, "There's a world of capability for joy, spread
round about us, meant for us, inviting us."
Thank you.
28 ( ADDRESSES BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVES
Address by the Graduate Representative of the School of Science
YUAN, Yuan BSc in Mathematics
Mr Pro-Chancellor, Mr Chairman, President Chu,
professors, guests, parents and fellow students:
First, on behalf of all the graduates in the
School of Science, I want to thank you all for
coming to the 14th Congregation of the Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology.
Time passes. I have been here for three and
half years. I still vividly recall that mild February
day when I first arrived at UST from the mainland.
I was attracted to the beauty of the campus, to the
fresh knowledge and ideas in the classrooms, and
to the name of "MIT of Asia and Pacific". I have
learned much and grown a lot since then.
The staff at HKUST are among the best in
Asia. To the world, they are excellent scientists
and scholars. But more importantly, to us, they
are our life-long mentors. Not only do they enrich
our knowledge and teach us how to be righteous
people, they also impact our lives, shape our
personalities in a way they themselves probably
won't notice. It was partly because of Professor
Cheng and Professor Yan Min's personal charm
that I decided to transfer to the department of
mathematics, though Professor Yan might not
even know me. Then, as a year one student, I
was introduced by CS department's Professor
Albert Chung to the research field of medical
image processing. Since then I have found myself
absorbed in this field.
Campus life is also wonderful. We got to know
each other through a variety of activities and
through building up trust in each other. We have
laid the foundation for our everlasting friendships.
We laughed, shed tears and walked through three
years shoulder to shoulder. We are lucky to have
one another.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to
express our gratitude to our faculty, campus staff,
our friends and families for their endless support.
Without them, life would lose some of its luster.
It is time to say goodbye. On our shoulders fall
the responsibility to make the world a better place.
In our minds there live unforgettable memories
of the past three years. In our hearts, there will
always be a name which we are proud to call our
own: HKUST.
Good luck, everybody. Thank you!
