iSPIN Desired State

Our School Culture is one in which parents…  Feel welcome in our school Understand and play a role in their children’s

education Feel confident and competent as they support their

children’s school success …and is based upon the positive relationships that

are developed, nurtured, and sustained between parents and school staff.

Our goal is for students to internalize the following attributes of successful students… Feel confident they can succeed Be internally motivated to do well in each class To know how to manage their own learning To know how to ask for help

Let’s Plan a Trip…

Using the note cards on your table please write one of the following words on each note card::

Placater Digresser Blamer Computer Silent One (only need this one if you have 5 in your

group)

Each person in your group takes one note card

Your group will plan a trip to anywhere – all expenses paid

You will play the role listed on your note card After one minute I will call time and you will switch note

cards. Each time you trade note cards continue your planning,

each time playing the role on your new note card.

LESS OF THIS MORE OF THIS

Team Cohesiveness

Members being forced

to do unwanted duties

Emphasis is on cooperation versus

competition

Dominance by individual members

Each team member must feel welcomed

and honored

Inability to resolve conflicts and differences; avoiding differences

Differences of opinion should be expected…all

members are encouraged to address the issues and

problems under consideration

Page 14: Networking Session 2 Iowa Parent Information Resource Center Welcome iSPIN Teams!

LESS OF THIS MORE OF THIS

Team Cohesiveness Continued..

Competition among team

members

A team conflict resolution system - process must be

learned by the team

Lack of success; not completing or

implementing tasks/idea

The team must sense achievement, learning, and/or task completion

Not all members feel their contributions are

honored

All members, including parents, actively

contribute. Group seeks information from all

members

Page 15: Networking Session 2 Iowa Parent Information Resource Center Welcome iSPIN Teams!

Effective Team Member Behaviors

As a team develops and member needs become integrated with team goals, there will be less self-oriented behavior and more task-oriented behavior. The following increases cohesiveness: Agreement on mission, beliefs and values Encouraging others Giving information and sharing ideas and offering

facts Seeking information, idea, facts, and opinions by

asking questions Clarifying and elaborating by interpreting

information shared by others and suggesting alternatives

Page 16: Networking Session 2 Iowa Parent Information Resource Center Welcome iSPIN Teams!

Effective Team Member Behaviors Continued… As appropriate, keeping track of information

and ideas by summarizing, offering a decision, recording information

Taking responsibility for assigned tasks that must be carried out independent of the group.

Resolving differences by compromising or getting the group members to explore differences

Recognizing that content areas, roles and responsibilities may differ

All members continue to learn and demonstrate behaviors consistently

Page 17: Networking Session 2 Iowa Parent Information Resource Center Welcome iSPIN Teams!

Let’s Plan a Trip…

Now work with your group to plan a trip to anywhere – all expenses paid!

This time use what your team has learned about increasing Team Cohesiveness & Effective Team Member Behaviors when planning your group’s trip
