THIS WEEKThe Nevada swimming and diving team will be in competition this week as the divers will head to Flagstaff, Arizona for the NAU Diving Invitational (Nov. 16-18), while the swimmers will travel to Berkley, California for a dual with the California Bears (Nov. 17). This marks the first invitational of the season for the divers and first dual on the road for the swimmers.

LAST TIME OUTFollowing its first dual loss of the year against reigning Mountain West champion Boise State, Nevada was able to bounce back the next day and take down Fresno State 174-109 for its lone dual win of the season. Throughout the weekend, the Wolf Pack won over 50 percent of its events, coming out on top of a total of 17 events over the course of two days. Nevada’s win against Fresno State also marked the team’s eighth consecutive dual victory over the Bulldogs, dating back to the 2010-11 season.

ABOUT CALIFORNIAAs the reigning national runner-ups, the Bears come into this matchup with the Wolf Pack having won every single competition they have competed in this season, including a perfect 3-0 record in dual meets. Cal bolsters a roster with young and talented swimmers, holding 11 freshmen on its team that is led by a group of four seniors. The Bears are guided by their head coach Teri McKeever who is looked upon as one of the most accomplished coaches in the country, having been at Cal for the past 25 years.

NEVADA SWEEPS MOUNTAIN WEST WEEKLY AWARDSAfter winning a total of 10 individual events over the course of two days against Boise State and Fresno State, Nevada sophomore Andressa Cholodovskis and senior Sharae Zheng received Mountain West Swimmer and Diver accolades for events through Oct. 31. The award marks the first of Cholodovskis’s career and fifth of Zheng’s career as well as the first time this season that Nevada has received MW weekly honors. The two athletes combined to win every individual event they competed in that week.

THE CHAMP IS HERE... THE CHAMP IS HERELooking to solidify her spot as the best diver in program history, senior Sharae Zheng will look to continue her reign of dominance after winning MW Diver of the Week her last time out. A two-time national champion, Zheng is coming off a junior campaign where she swept all three diving events at last year’s MW Championships, which led her to earn All-American honors after her performance in both the 1 and 3-meter springboard at NCAA Championships. Since her fourth-place finish in the 3-meer springboard on Jan. 23, 2016, Zheng has come out on top of every single regular season event she has competed in.

NEVADA MEET NOTES | DUAL VS. BOISE STATE AND FRESNO STATE 2

Reno native Brendon Bray enters his second year as the head coach of the women’s swimming and diving program. A graduate of Reno High School and a former collegiate standout swimmer, Bray will start the 2017-18 campaign for the Wolf Pack with 13 years of coaching experience underneath his belt.

Following a successful stint as head coach at North Texas, leading the Mean Green for three seasons, Bray extended Nevada’s undefeated streak to 16, finishing the 2016-17 campaign with a 7-1 record. In just his first season at the helm of the program, a total of 10 swimmers and divers received MW All-Conference honors as the Pack finished third at the conference meet.

He also boasts Mountain West expertise as a former associate head coach at San Diego State and additional Pac 12 experience as a former assistant coach at Washington. Bray was born in San Francisco before moving to Reno, where he lived for 14 years until graduating from Reno High School as a three-time state champion. Bray swam collegiately at Utah and Washington before beginning his coaching career.

Prior to joining the Pack, Bray led North Texas to one of its best seasons in recent program history, highlighting his building process as the Mean Green transitioned into a new conference. North Texas posted a 7-4 dual record in 2015-16, finishing with the second-most dual wins and second-best winning percentage in school history. North Texas also placed fourth at the Conference USA Championships, which marked the program’s best league finish since joining the conference.

Bray helped freshman Rebekah Bradley win a conference title in the 200-yard backstroke, which marked the program’s first individual C-USA title. Bray coached Bradley and Claudia Kitching to all-conference honors while the team posted 15 NCAA “B” cut times.

In his second season at the helm, North Texas posted a 4-4 dual record with a fifth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships in 2014-15. The Mean Green opened the season with a 3-1 record, the best start in program history, and notched wins against Houston and Rice. North Texas also earned all-conference honors in the 400 medley relay and 400 IM. Seniors Krista Rossum and Mona Groteguth set three program records on the season. In his first season at North Texas, the team’s first season in C-USA, the Mean Green set four program records and tallied NCAA B cut times in three events. The Mean Green placed fifth at the C-USA Championships.

On top of the success in the pool, Bray established a tradition of excellent academic achievement at North Texas that he brought to Nevada as well. The Mean Green received CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors for all three spring semesters under Bray’s command. His team also eclipsed 3.5 cumulative GPAs and ranked in the top 15 nationally in three straight seasons. In the fall of 2016, Nevada posted a team GPA of 3.57, which was good enough to be ranked amongst the best in the nation at No. 15.

Bray arrived to North Texas from San Diego State, where he coached the Aztecs for six seasons from 2007-13 and helped turn the program into a national contender. Bray was an assistant coach at SDSU before being promoted to associate head coach.

Prior to Bray’s arrival at SDSU, the program had finished last at the conference meet for five straight seasons. After helping recruit the fourth-best recruiting class in the nation in 2009, Bray then led the Aztecs to its first Mountain West championship in program history in 2011 before repeating as league champions in 2013.

Bray elevated SDSU to a peak No. 9 national ranking in NCAA Division I according to CollegeSwimming.com and frequent top 25 CSCAA rankings. During Bray’s tenure, the Aztecs broke every single swimming and diving program record and posted a 77-14 overall dual record, becoming a conference and regional power. Bray coached three Mountain West Swimmers of the Year, six NCAA All-Americans and 13 individual NCAA Championship participants during his tenure. SDSU also posted a 26-1 dual record in three seasons following Bray’s promotion into the role of associate head coach.

Bray began his coaching career at his alma mater, Washington, where he served as an undergraduate assistant from 2004-05 before being promoted to a men’s and women’s assistant head coach from 2005-07. As the program’s recruiting coordinator, Bray oversaw all recruiting operations and helped bring the top-ranked recruit in the nation to Washington in 2007. Bray also coached multiple NCAA qualifiers and NCAA Championship scorers while at UW.

After graduating as a three-time state champion at Reno High School, Bray went on to become a four-year collegiate letter winner. He began his collegiate career at Utah, competing for one season before transferring to Washington. Bray was a three-year letterwinner with the Huskies and won the team’s most improved award as a junior and most inspirational award as a senior. Bray was a senior national qualifier and Pac-12 championship participant while at UW. He has also been a participant at the USA Swimming National Championships.

Bray received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington in 2005 before earning a master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership at UW in 2007. He and his wife, Beth, have a newborn son, Calvin.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT “DRE”Since joining the team at semester break last season, sophomore Andressa Cholodovskis has quickly made her mark as one of the best swimmers in the conference. Last season, she earned All-Conference honors in the 200-yard IM and freestyle, and this year she is making her case for a MW Swimmer of the Year accolade. So far this season, she also holds the conference’s top times in three different events, as well as the second-best time in another.

A TOUGH SCHEDULE AHEADWith aspirations of being a top program, many of Nevada’s competitions involve multiple Pac-12 opponents, including California who finished last season as the national runner-up. The Pack’s schedule this year also features matchups with the two teams that finished above Nevada at the 2017 MW Championships in San Diego State and Boise State, both of whom made a trip to Reno this season.

INTERNATIONAL LOVEWith only six people on its roster from the United States, Nevada’s unparalleled characteristic of having swimmers and divers from all over the globe has created a cultural diversity that is one of the most unique in all of college sports. Excluding Antarctica, the Pack has at least one student-athlete from every continent in the world, on its current roster.

CONSISTENT COACHINGNevada head coach Brendon Bray enters his second season at the helm of the program, after helping lead the Pack to a 6-1 dual meet record from a year ago. In his four seasons as a head coach at the Division I level, Bray now holds a lifetime record of 19-17 (.514). Alongside Bray is Nevada diving coach Jian Li You, who is in her 22nd season with the Wolf Pack. During her tenure in Reno, You has established Nevada as one of the premier diving schools in the region, having won the past five MW Diving Coach of the Years honors.

WELCOME TO THE PACKNevada welcomes seven newcomers to the roster for the 2017-18 season. The Wolf Pack’s ranks will be bolstered by six true freshman in Donna dePolo, Olivia Dockery, Alexandra Hartman, Caitlyn McHugh, Isabella Sangraw and Lauren Stigler. The Pack also welcomes a sophomore in Diana Sokolowska, who transfered from a school in Gdansk, Poland.
