DR. TOM BOTZMANUniversity President

Dr. Tom Botzman is in his first year as president of Misericordia University.

“I am excited and honored to be serving as president of Misericordia University,’’ said Botzman “The University has an impressive faculty and staff who know how

to engage the students in learning, both inside and outside the classroom. It is an honor to follow Dr. (Michael A.) MacDowell’s successful 15 years and be entrusted with the traditions of the Sisters of Mercy.”

The 13th president in Misericordia history, Dr. Botzman has served as vice president for business and finance at St. Mary’s College of Maryland since 2004, where he was also a professor of economics.

His areas of responsibility have included finance, human resources, facilities and maintenance, information technology, government relations, athletics, sailing, and public safety.

He also served as interim vice president for development and secretary to the Board of Trustees in 2009-10.

Dr. Botzman previously served for 15 years on the faculty at Mount Union College in Ohio.

Botzman also served as the associate academic dean during the 2003-04 academic year and as director of international studies from 1993 to 1997.

He was a visiting professor and Fulbright Scholar at the University of the Americas in Mexico City, Mexico, teaching there four times from 1992 through 1996 and was named an American Council on Education Fellow in 2002.

Dr. Botzman worked in industry prior to becoming a faculty member and is the inventor of 12 U.S. patents.

“Dr. Botzman’s background and expertise match Misericordia University’s agenda for new leadership perfectly,” said Misericordia University Trustee Christopher Borton, who chaired the presidential search committee. “He brings significant enthusiasm for this important leadership position, and a broad array of successful experiences that will enable him to build on the momentum our University has experienced over these last 15 years.”

Dr. Botzman earned a B.S. in engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He also holds an M.A. in economics and a Ph.D. in business administration from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

2013 SeaSon PreviewIn collegiate sports, they say the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores. That’s certainly good news for head coach Mark Ross and the Misericordia University football team as the Cougars enter their second season with 32 sophomores on the roster.

“We have a good group of sophomores returning who gained a lot of experience last year,” said Ross. “They are playing a leadership role and really helping the freshmen along.”

Despite going 0-10 in their first season, the 2012 season was a success, according to Ross. “We can’t measure our success in wins and losses at this time,” said Ross. “We got better every day and we competed. That’s all we could ask for last year.”

The expectations are similar for 2013. “We certainly go into to each game believing that we can win it,” said Ross. “With a year of experience under their belts, we expect a little more out of our veterans players, but we still are looking for constant improvement and the will to compete.”

Although 17 starters return from a year ago, there are no guaranteed spots for the 2013 season. “Perhaps the greatest strength of this year’s team is our overall depth,” said Ross. “We have competition at every position and we’re going to put the players on the field that we believe give us the best opportunity to win.”

Sophomore John Ameen, an honorable mention All-MAC performer at right guard, is among four returning starters on the offensive line. Other veterans include Trevor Davis and Connor Duffy at left and right tackle, respectively. Alec Garrity may make the switch to tackle after playing at center a year ago.

A solid group of freshmen adds depth, including Alex Reyes, Sam Johnson, Joe Nowitzke, Matt Henderson and Connor O’Hara.

“Our offensive line is bigger, deeper and stronger than they were a year ago,” said Ross. “We’ll likely have at least two freshmen starting and how they gel as a group will be a key factor in our success.”

Tom Stelzer and Dean Lucchessi both return at tight end and provide experience at a

deep position. Dylan Kluber, Nick Smith and Alec Rhoads are expected to see time at tight end as well. “Stelzer and Lucchessi are the best of the group, but our young guys are even better than we anticipated,” said Ross.

Sophomore Juwan Petties-Jackson, an honorable mention All-MAC choice on special teams leads a group of talented wide receivers along with Tyler Rowe and Kurt Kowalski.

“Petties-Jackson is a deep threat and Kowalski will work in the slot,” said Ross. “Rowe runs good routes and is a good blocker.”

2013 SeaSon PreviewThe freshmen class adds depth, including Chris Kirkland and Colton Pyne. Frank Santarsiero and Robin Custodio both return at running back while Tosin Adeyemo steps in after missing last season with an injury.

Freshmen Carmine Verducci and Vince Grausso could also be in the rotation in the backfield. “We’re pleased with the depth at running back,” said Ross. “All three of our veterans have looked very good in camp and our young guys are talented.”

Under center, Jeff Puckett returns after starting eight games a year ago along with backup Mike Pheasant. They are joined by freshman Jeff Krisiak, Ryan Kurtz, Johnny Rhodes and Michael Berstecher.

“We are significantly better at quarterback simply based on depth,” said Ross. “Puckett gained a tremendous amount of game experience last year, but some of the young guys have really been impressive. I wouldn’t be surprised if we use more than one quarterback.”

With just three returnees, several newcomers will play key roles along the defensive line. “We’re young, but we are bigger and stronger across the line,” said Ross. “We have several players who will have an opportunity to make an impact on our program.”

Greg Zotian returns at defensive end and will be backed up by a trio of freshmen, Austin Deinarowicz, Donald Bender and Jared Harmon.

Jake Livingston returns at the other end spot while Cory Dickerson and Andrew LeFevre add depth.

At nose tackle, Ben Muschlitz returns and will split time with newcomers K.C. Jones, Chris Grevas and Josh Mercado.

Omar Clark and Chris Szabo both return at outside linebacker while Tim Kelly will challenge for time.Tim Martin returns at the other outside linebacker position while newcomers Anthony Rand-Willever and Chris McConnell have been impressive.

On the inside, Hunter Pates and Dom Picarillo provide plenty of experience and Jeff Smith and Sean Weg also return. Rob Hart, Dan Kiely and Charlie Perruso have had solid pre-season camps.

In the secondary, Kevin Bagasevich is a returning starter while Phil Arnold and Anthony Buffa also return. Matt Martin, Shane Gallichio, Tyler Pegarella and Anthony McNee could see time as freshmen.

Ben Camacho returns at strong safety while freshman Isaiah Harvey will be in the mix.

Returnees Tyler Hessert and Brandon Salazar are battling for time at free safety while newcomers Steve Strobel and Dean Ferrezza add depth.

Freshman Patrick Newins has locked up the placekicking job and is battling Dylan Quirk and Phil Arnold for the punting duties.

“Newins gives us more range on field goals and good depth and placement on kickoffs,” said Ross. “He is a significant upgrade at kicker.”

Petties-Jackson and Camacho will handle the bulk of the return chores while Kirkland will also be in the mix.

Overall, Ross is pleased with what he’s seen of his team throughout pre-season camp. “I like this group,” he said. “They work hard and are extremely coachable. They do whatever we ask of them and they are fun to be around.”

With that, Ross is looking forward to Misericordia’s second season of football. “The returnees have bought in to what we’re trying to accomplish and have taken the newcomers under their wing,” said Ross. “If we stay healthy and get some consistency, we could surprise some people.”

The Cougars will host Gettysburg in the 2013 season opener, Saturday, September 7 at 1:00.

MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III

Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation.

While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.

Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens.

Athletics participation at many of the 432 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics.

That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities.

In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success.

While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes act, the NCAA sponsors 36 national champi-onships annually at the Division III level.

Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 41 conference titles and sent 19 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the women’s soccer team advancing to the 2012 Final Four.

In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericordia on the national map:

Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion.

Willie Chandler, basketball: Second leading scorer in NCAA Division III history.

Heather Dougherty, swimming: School’s first NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: first-team All-American.

Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led NCAA Division III in blocks per game.

Amy Bower, cross country: All-American; didn’t run competitively until college.

Frank Redmond, track & field: MU’s first track & field All-American.

Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in NCAA Division III in career assists.

Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game.

Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution serving both residential and commuting students.

Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sci-ences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.

The University is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects.

The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With 3,012 students, including 1,886 full-time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.

Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-ath-letes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.

Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.

The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio.

The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was con-structed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.

The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation.

Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was chris-tened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team.

McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was construct-ed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams.
