ASH CAVE * NA – Instrumental

Comp: Bradley SOWASH Rts: Bradley Sowash Music

Perf: Bradley SOWASH (piano) Prod Co: Bradley Sowash Music Time: 4:25 1. CD: IN THE MOMENT Bradley Sowash Music (?) (Tk 12) 2. Reissue CD: IN THE MOMENT (2000) The Orchard 4611 (Tk 12) Notes: Bradley Sowash is an Ohio concert pianist and music teacher, who describes his music as “somewhere on the musical spectrum between Ellington's playfulness and Beethoven's romanticism.” (Anon. n.d.) Living and working in Ohio it is reasonable to assume that he visited Ash Cave in the Hocking Hills State

Park near Logan. Although just an immense shelter cave, Ash Cave should probably be considered one of the most famous caves in Ohio. Located at the end of a blind gorge, this horseshoe-shaped cave measures 700 feet (213m) from end to end and 100 feet (30m) deep, with an overhanging rim 90 feet (27m) high. The waterfall is a small tributary of the East Fork of Queer Creek. The cave got its name from a “huge pile of ashes found under the shelter by early settlers.” (Anon. 2017a) These ashes were remains of prehistoric Native American campfires. The music of Ash Cave is described as – “stark but evocative opening chords gradually give way to a freely

flowing improvisation in a minor key before returning to the opening material.” (Anon. 2017b) One critic found it “mysterious and more abstract” than other pieces on the album. (Parsons 1999) A 30-second audio clip of this piano piece had melancholic rambling chords. AT THE GROTTO NA – Celtic – Instrumental

Comp: Emmeline SCHOEN

Perf: THE O’NEILL BROTHERS Tim & Ryan O’Neill (pianos) Prod Co: Shamrock-n-Roll Inc. Liner Notes: The O’Neill Brothers Time: 5:30 1. CD: A NOTRE DAME EXPERIENCE Shamrock-n-Roll 1206 (Tk 5) 2. Reissue on Boxed Set Compilation CD: IRISH 3 CD

COLLECTION (2004) The O’Neill Brothers 1403 (3XCDs) (Disc 3 – Tk 5)

Notes: The title of the original album is referring to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, which both brothers attended. This piano piece was inspired by the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto on the campus of Notre Dame, near the Basilica. Built with boulders from nearby farms in 1896, the grotto is a rather simplified facsimile of the original natural cave at Lourdes, the Grotte de Masabielle (for more information see under Cave Picture Covers – Real Caves – France – Lourdes). Two small pieces of stone from the original grotto in France are located on the right-hand side of the shrine directly below the statue of Mary. This is not religious music; it is music inspired by a religious site, much the same as the New Age music inspired by the Buddhist or Hindu caves in India or the meditation music inspired by the Grotto of Saint Francis in Assisi, Italy. A 30-second audio clip provided high clear chords slowly rippling around and down. BETWEEN CAVE AND CLOUD NA – Synthesizer – Instrumental Comp: Michael HOPPÉ & Tim WHEATER Rts: Michael Hoppé/Chordially Yours (ASCAP)

Perf: Michael HOPPÉ (keyboards) & Tim WHEATER (Indian flute) Sound Effects: Richard Burmer Prod: Michael Hoppé & Richard Burmer Prod Co: Seventh Wave Productions; Mill Valley, CA

http://www.sevwave.com Liner Notes: Michael Hoppé Time: 7:06 CD: WIND SONGS Seventh Wave SWP 7044-2 (Tk 1) Notes: “The album opens with ‘Between Cave and Cloud;’ mountains quake and skies shudder in extended Oms, a gently mournful lament for the Earth.” (Wright 2017) Sound effects and a sustained low register line on the synthesizer leads into a very nice Indian flute improvisation providing a light, ethereal feel with the background bass line keeping the atmosphere in an underground cloud. Wheater has studied with the world-famous flautist, James Galway, and played with jazz soloists and symphony orchestras. He has also lectured on the power of music to heal. BLUE GROTTO NA – Instrumental

Comp: Jon DAHLANDER

Perf: Jon DAHLANDER (piano) Prod. Co: Carpe Diem Records; Dallas, TX Time: 4:06 CD: PIANO LANDSCAPES: SOLO PIANO – VOL. 1 Carpe Diem 31015 (Tk 7)

Notes: It is not known if this piece was inspired by the famous Blue Grotto at Capri or by any of the many other Blue Grottoes around the world (see also under Popular Music – Italy and UK & US – A to F and under Jazz Music – Swing). Several of the other selections on this album were inspired by motifs associated with the sea: shells, sand dollars, beachcombing, etc. A hesitant, mellow stroll that builds in intensity and lyric power. At one point lower chords provide a stirring rhythm behind the melodic theme. CARLSBAD * CAVE NA – Ambient – Synthesizer – Instrumental Comp: Aaron ACOSTA

Perf: Aaron ACOSTA (synthesizer) Prod. Co: Aaron Acosta Time: (Tk 3) 3:37 & (Tk 4) 2:34 CD: WAVE

Aaron Acosta (?) (Tks 3 & 4) Notes: Aaron Acosta is a graduate from the College of Santa Fe with a BA in Sound Design in Media in 2002. (Anon. n.d.) At some point, while he was at Santa Fe, he was inspired by Carlsbad Caverns, at the southern end of New Mexico. This album mixes acoustic and electric sounds in an experiment of musical free-form thought. CARLSBAD – One 55-second sample had a few sonorous water drops followed by slow, flowing synth melody. Another 30-second CDBaby sample had the flowing melody follow by high notes. CAVE – Harsh continuous synth sounds and humming background. CAVE AT MONTANA DE ORO * NA – Synthesizer – Instrumental

Comp: Debbie FOISY

Perf: FERRON [aka Debbie FOISY] (synthesizer) Prod: Ferron Prod Co: Nemesis/Cherrywood Station Time: 4:37 CD: RESTING WITH THE QUESTION

Cherrywood Station CW 006 (Tk 7) Notes: Ferron is a well-known Canadian folksinger, composer, and guitarist. This was her only instrumental album and on it she plays only synthesizer. This is a pleasant New Age keyboard outing that rambles around, seeking here and there, exploring melodic paths in ringing passages and sad melancholic ways. The Montana de Oro State Park is located on the San Luis Obispo coast near Los Osos, California. Several littoral caves and tunnels in sandstones and shales here can be viewed from the cliff tops or visited with a sea kayak. There is a large sea cave at the end of Coon Creek Beach and a huge sinkhole with a tunnel to the sea north of Point Buchon. Of course, it is not known which of these caves inspired this piece.

CAVE DWELLERS NA – Synthesizer – Percussion – Instrumental – Cave Pic Cover Comp: Steve ROACH & Byron METCALF Arr: Steve Roach Rts: Soundquest Music & Dr.Bam's Music(BMI)

Perf: Steve ROACH (synthesizer, spirit breath,

elastic cave groove, atmospheres, ocarinas, voice, shamanic percussion)

Byron METCALF (shamanic percussion, S. ROACH

clay pots, & frame drum) Jorge Reyes (voice, body percussion, & ocarinas) Prod: Steve Roach & Byron Metcalf Prod. Co: Project; Chicago, IL Rec. Co: Timeroom; Tucson, AZ Liner Notes: Anon. Time: 23:08 B. METCALF CD: THE SERPENT'S LAIR (PC-RE)

Project 107 (2XCDs) (Disc 2 - Tk 3) Notes: Disc 2 in this New Age album provides seven pieces under the title, "Offerings from the Underworld." This one is a very long, extended improvisation of light percussion processed in various ways and occasional distant, chanting voices all creating a mysterious other-worldly atmosphere. "Groove alchemy" (and presumably "elastic cave groove") is Roach's "term for describing the various and often extreme transmutations that occur with the original sources throughout many different studio techniques. The alchemy would usually start with Byron's percussion grooves and

would sometimes include other unrelated rhythmic and non-rhythmic infusions to create the final effect." (Liner notes)

“Metcalf, a master percussionist, provided the impetus for the intersection of rhythms, while Roach provided both the sonic archeology and ambient architecture to erect virtual worlds of sound that existed in no other place. His "cave," or "underworld" is a place rife with images and noise. It is noted that some of the sounds occurring here can never be recreated; they were spiritual utterances from this cavern of soul travel… When the voices of the "Cave Dwellers" begin their chant, the entire project has arrived intact, in the place where transformation begins in earnest – all of the known is gone, left behind, nothing but ashes remain. Here, textures and colors glimmer and fade in the mix, drums are understated, speaking softly to one another in the

darkness of the cave.” (Jurek 2017) The first section has light shimmering synthesizer with occasional rhythmic tapings and things go on from there. No attempt will be made to describe this 23-minute long piece. This is just one of two cave-inspired pieces in the New Age category co-composed and performed by Steve Roach (see also under United States – Gate to M – The Grotto of Time Lost). CAVE OF THE WINDS NA – Synthesizer – Instrumental Comp: Paul WINTER Rts: Living Earth Music (BMI)

Perf: PAUL WINTER & THE EARTH BAND P. WINTER Paul Winter (soprano sax) Paul Halley (pipe organ) Prod: Paul Winter & Dixon Van Winkle Prod. Co: Earth Music Productions; Litchfield, CT Rec. Location: Cathedral of St. John the Divine; New York, NY Liner Notes: Paul Winter Time: 5:49 CD: JOURNEY WITH THE SUN P. HALLEY

Living Music LMUS 01048-80038-2 (Tk 5) Notes: This piece was inspired by a man-made acoustical space (a cathedral), not any natural cave,

Regarding the Cathedral, Winter writes – "Its monumental architecture and extraordinary acoustics have a profound effect on musicians and listeners alike. In the immensely resonant space of St. John's, you are obliged to listen, and to play, in new ways." As for this particular piece, he says that the theme for this duet is "Dreamcatcher" which was included with his Grand Canyon recordings on the album Canyon Lullaby. "Within the vast cavern of the Cathedral, Paul Halley and I commune through the wind-driven sounds of our respective instruments: he on the 8,035 pipes of the Aeolian-Skinner organ, I with the solitary one of my Selmer soprano saxophone." (Liner Notes) A melancholic ramble where the soprano brings in several high octave passages followed by the pipe organ that plows along and then fades.

Reissue CD: TRANCES AND DRONES (2000) Release RR 6455-2 (2XCDs) (Disc 1 – Tk 1) Notes: Labeled by some as “space music” this composer’s work has been customarily classified as New Age, but it sounds more like electronica. One critic wrote – “The journey unfolds with "Cave Paintings", the listener is immediately transported into mysterious forest, falling night with serenading cicadas-like sounds, the full immersion invades, the darker, drone passages are stunningly intermingled with lighter traceries and rather high-pitched, soaring lap steel guitar expressions, always harmoniously fitting and progressing. Slightly nostalgic feel surrounds the entire, 24-minute long composition. A virtuoso opening!!!” (Gürtier 2013) And another critic added – “It’s nearly five minutes into ‘Cave Paintings’ before some delicate keyboard-like sounds create a more tangible pathway through the largely atmospheric piece. Muted electronic cicadas add the tangible sense of place hinted at in the title.” (Fasimpaur 2002) Besides the insect noises there are also a “haunting gamelan” sounds (Intima 2003) This very long piece starts in silence then has low electronic wind sounds and variations on that. No attempt will be made to describe this 24-minute long piece. Just give it a listen when you have the time. CAVERN OF THE WIND SPIRIT NA – Ethno Fusion – Acoustic – Instrumental & Vocal Comp: William EATON

Perf: WILLIAM EATON ENSEMBLE William Eaton (16-string lyre) Mary REDHOUSE

(Hamon 1997) [The pure sounds of the two lyres, built by the artists themselves, harmonize perfectly in this improvisation. The pan flute accompanies Mary Redhouse during her vocalizing and everything is set to rhythm by several percussions.] One audio sample had chiming chords, bird-like chirps, and high-pitched cries and another sample had varied chiming chords and a funky beat.

Eaton has recorded with the famous Navajo flutist, R. Carlos Nakai and also with Gary Stroutsos (see under New Age Music – Crystal to M – Cueva Cuvee). The vocalist here, Mary Redhouse, is a Navajo singer. So it is just possible that the title refers to a real or mythical cave in Navajo country. CAVERNS OF ST. GEORGE NA – Synthesizer – Instrumental Comp: David WHEATLEY Rts: Wheatley Music, USA (ASCAP)

Perf: LIGHTSTREAM David Wheatley (piano & synthesizer) Dennis Belfield (fretless bass) Roger Larocque (percussion) Prod: David Wheatley Prod Co: Freshwater Records; Los Angeles, CA Liner Notes: David Wheatley Time: 5:02 CD: THE WATERWAYS ALBUM David WHEATLEY

Freshwater FWCD 101 (Tk 9) Notes: As described in the notes – "a verger's tour of an Anglican church basement yields unexpected passageways and perspectives." The music is a pleasant lyrical spin starting on synthesizer-organ then slipping into piano with bass and percussion backup. There is the town of St. George (or St. George’s) at the northeastern end of the Bermuda Isles. Just north of the town on Retreat Hill is a powder magazine, called Gunpowder Cavern, built in 1887 to store British Army gunpowder. “In the 1960s, after long lying deserted, it became a combined restaurant and tourist attraction, especially popular with both civilian visitors and American military personnel and their families then stationed in Bermuda who wanted an atmospheric night out… It closed again in the 1990s and has not been re-opened since.” (Forbes 2018) Most of Bermuda’s natural caves can be found not far southwest in the nearby Walsingham caves district, Hamilton Parish, includung the show caves, Crystal Cave, Cathedral Caves, and Prospero’s Caves, etc. However, the caverns of St. George could well be somewhere else in the English-speaking world or maybe they are just imaginary caves. CAVE WALKER * NA – Nature Sounds – Synthesizer – Recorded in Cave (?)

Perf: David Miles HUBER (synthesizer) Prod: David Miles Huber Prod Co: Delta Music Inc.; Santa Monica; CA Rec. Eng: (?) Time: 12:49 1. CD: BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE SKY: THE BEAR LaserLight Digital/ Delta 12 691 (Tk 1) 2. Boxed Set CDs: BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE SKY 1 – 5 (1996) LaserLight Digital/ Delta 15 982 (5XCDs) (Disc 1 – Tk 1) Notes: This album is subtitled, “Reflections on Native Meditations.” It is very difficult to tell from two different 30-second samples, one from each album, whether these are both the same 12-minute 49-second piece first released by Laserlight/ Delta in 1996. The first sample has all nature sounds – water running, crackling sounds, and something moving, presumably a bear, in the cave. Whereas the second sample has an eerie sustained tune on synth keyboard with a few distant wails and knocking sounds. Given the same artist and running time, the same label, a similar album title, and the inclusion of a vignette reproduction of the original “Bear” CD cover on the boxed set cover these are most likely different samples from the same piece. However, it is not known if these bear sound were actually recorded in a natural cave. David Huber also put out several other albums in this series “Between the Sea and the Sky” – The Wolf, The Eagle, The Raven, etc. Ref: Between the Sea and the Sky – The Bear CD, Allmusic (◄AUDIO SAMPLE) Between the Sea and the Sky, Boxed Set 5 CDs, Allmusic (◄AUDIO SAMPLE) Between the Sea and the Sky – The Bear CD, CDUniverse David Miles Huber, Between the Sea and the Sky 1, Boxed Set 5 CDs, Discogs
