The Basic Massage Routine

This stroke comes from Indian massage. Raise your baby’s leg and secure the ankle with one hand. Place the other hand at the base of the thigh. Gently glide your hand up the length of the leg until you reach the ankle. Use the hand that has just been massaging to secure the ankle and place the other hand at the base of the thigh. Repeat the gliding motion to the ankle. Change hands again. Repeat this stroke between six and eight times.

Place your hands at the base of the thigh, next to each other. Gently wrap your fingers around the thigh. Move your hands up the length of the thigh in a gliding motion as if you were wringing something out. Do not squeeze the thigh, just glide.When you reach the ankle, place your hands back at the top of the thigh. Repeat six to eight times.

Sole Stroking

Cradle your baby’s foot in your hands, sole facing you and gently stroke from the heel to the toes. Repeat six to eight times.

Toe Rolling

Take each toe in turn and roll it. Try singing a rhyme whilst massaging the toes.

Pressure Points

Hold baby’s foot in your hand. Extend your first finger and place it under the ball of the foot, just under the toes and hold this position for a few seconds. Move your finger to the arch of the foot. Again press gently into the arch of the foot for a few seconds. Repeat this three times.

This stroke originates from Swedish massage. It is very similar to Indian draining except your hands are moving towards the body.

Elevate your baby’s leg. Place both hands at either side of the base of the thigh. Open the hand and gently roll the leg between your hands. Roll from the thigh to the ankle. Repeat three times. Try singing “Jelly on a plate” as you do the stroke. Your baby will love this!

Place your hand flat across the soft part of baby’s tummy. Move your hand from the top of the stomach area to the bottom of the stomach area. Repeat this movement using the other hand. Use alternate hands in a paddling motion. Remember to use the flat part of the hand and not the edge. Repeat six to eight times.

Sunshine Using the fingers your left hand, make circles in a clockwise direction on your baby’s stomach area. Always make circles in a clockwise direction following the direction of your baby’s digestion. Do not press too hard on this area. Repeat six to eight times.

Moonlight Once you have established the rhythm of the full circle, add your right hand and draw a half circle on the left hand side of babies abdomen area. Imagine baby’s tummy has a clock on it with 12 at the top and 6 at the bottom, use the right hand to draw a half circle from “9 to 5” on the clock.

Raise your baby’s arm and secure the wrist with one hand. Place the other hand around the top of the arm next to the shoulder. Gently glide your hand up the length of the arm until you reach the wrist. Use the hand that has just been massaging to secure the wrist and place the other hand round the top of the shoulder. Repeat the gliding motion to the wrist. Change hands again. Repeat this stroke between six and eight times.

Place your first fingers along your baby’s top lip pointing towards each other. Gently move each finger in opposite directions along the top lip following the line of your baby’s gums. Repeat the same stroke but on the bottom lip, again tracing the shape of your baby’s gums.

Make small circles with your fingers moving down your baby’s back until you reach the buttocks. On reaching the buttocks make bigger circles to relax these muscles.
